Paswan meets Sonia over alliance formation

PaswanNew Delhi, Jan 29: Amid indications of unease between his party and RJD, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) president Ram Vilas Paswan on Wednesday met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi here to urge her to take the lead in finalising the alliance in Bihar as “clarity” was required on seat-sharing among the allies.

LJP sources said Mr. Paswan told Ms Gandhi that his party will not talk to RJD chief Lalu Prasad on the issue of seat-sharing, reflecting the unease between the two parties.

Mr. Paswan, who was accompanied by his son and party’s parliamentary board chairman Chirag Paswan, cautioned Ms. Gandhi that an alliance with RJD could hurt the party on the issue of corruption.

He asked Ms. Gandhi to ensure that LJP gets its due share of seats. Party sources said LJP would not contest any fewer than 10 seats.

The LJP chief asked Ms Gandhi to take the lead in the matter, the sources said.

“There is a need to bring clarity about the issue of alliance in Bihar,” Mr. Paswan said after the meeting with Ms. Gandhi.

His son and party’s parliamentary board chairman Chirag Paswan said LJP’s alliance with Congress is final and it was up to the latter to decide which other party will join in.

“The purpose of today’s meeting was that there should be clarity on seat-sharing among the parties whosoever come together,” he said.

LJP can make some compromise on 12 seats it had contested in Bihar in 2009 elections, he said. Congress was not part of RJD-LJP alliance that time.

The party has already given to AICC General Secretary in charge of Bihar C.P. Joshi a list of 10 seats it wants to contest. It includes nine of the 12 seats LJP had contested in 2009 where it came second. It had lost all seats.

Ms. Gandhi asked Mr. Chirag to finalise the matter with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi. She told them that he should ask Mr. Joshi to clarify things at the earliest, he said.

New Delhi, Jun 27: Fuel prices were hiked by the oil marketing companies for the 21st day in a row on Saturday. Petrol and diesel will now cost Rs 80.38/litre and Rs 80.40/litre respectively in the national capital.

The price of petrol is increased by Rs 0.25 per litre while that of diesel by Rs 0.21 per litre.
Rates differ from state to state depending on the incidence of value-added tax (VAT).

Notably, oil marketing companies have been adjusting retail rates in line with costs after an 82-day break from rate revision amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. These firms on June 7 restarted revising prices in line with costs.

The Congress party had called the increase in the price of petrol and diesel 'unjust', 'thoughtless' and demanded from the Central government to roll back increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the citizens of this country.
In an official statement, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) had said that no government should levy and impose such unacceptable strain on its people.

Before the nation entered the lockdown, the average price of petrol and diesel in Delhi was Rs 69.60 per litre and Rs 62.30 per litre respectively.
