Ajman, Sept 26: Sayed Khorshed Alam, a 50-year-old Bangladeshi national who recently underwent a brain surgery spoke and sang with his Doctors at Thumbay Hospital – Ajman throughout the surgery, while they were busy removing a Tennis ball-sized tumour from his brain.

Dr Ishwar Chandra Premsagar and patient Sayed Khorshed Alam

Known as ‘awake brain surgery’ this procedure requires the patient to be awake, alert andcooperative, while doctors during this procedure ask questions and monitor the activity in the patient’s brain as he responds.

The patient came to the hospital with complaints of weakness of the right lower limb followed by the right upper limb, which he had been experiencing since July 2017. He had focal seizure in the right leg in late August 2017, which lasted for about 2 minutes without loss of consciousness. Examinations revealed that the weakness on his right leg was more than that of his hand. He could not walk without support. His weakness increasedgradually and he became wheelchair bound.

At Thumbay Hospital – Ajman, contrast MRI of the patient’s brain revealed a large tumour on the left side of brain which controls the movement of the right side of the body, particularly the leg. The team led by Dr.Ishwar Chandra Premsagar, Consultant (Incharge) – Neurosurgery, decided to perform ‘Awake Brain Surgery’. “The tumor was very close to the area controlling the movement of the body’s right side. Tumors in this position are especially critical for people who are right-handed,” said Dr. Ishwar.

The patient was operated on while he was awake, talking, singing and moving his hands and legs. Throughout the procedure of removal of the tumour, he was encouraged to talk and move his right hand and leg by Dr.Vinay, the Neuroanesthetist, to ensure that the procedure wasn’t causing further weakness or any speech problem. “The advantage of this type of surgery is that the surgeons can monitor the progress during the operation. The procedure also reduces the risk of damage to functional areas of your brain that could affect limb movements or speech, because as long as the patient doesn’t experience further weakness or inability to speak, the surgeons are reassured that they are on the right track,” said Dr. Ishwar.

“Thebone of skull just overlying the tumour was removed by Craniotomy, under local anesthesia. Then the brain tumour was removed with his active cooperation. It was taken out bit-by-bit with special machine called CUSA.  CUSA removes the tumour silently without affecting the surrounding brain and with minimum bleeding. After total removal of tumour, the bone was fixed back as before,” explained the doctor.

Soon after the surgery, the patient drank water, and fruit juice a little later. He had a full meal in the evening. He was able to stand up next morning started &walking with support, soon after. “The awake brain surgery not only avoided increase in weakness but rather there was improvement in weakness on the very same day. The side effects of general anesthesia were also avoided. He was discharged from the hospital completely recovered, demonstrated by his ability to stand on his weak limb alone, without any support.”

SayedKhurshidAlam is a happy man now. “This is a miracle God has given me. I am grateful to the doctors at Thumbay Hospital Ajman for the treatment. I had given up hopes of being able to walk on my own ever again, prior to the surgery. Now I am also able to run,” he said with a beaming smile.

Headed by expert doctors with wide ranging experience, the Neurosurgery Department of Thumbay Hospital – Ajman is well-equipped to perform all types of neuro surgeries. The department offers a range of minimally invasive procedures including Endoscopic Lumbar Spine Surgery and Endoscopic Cervical Spine Surgery. These procedures take only 40 minutes to 1 hour through small incision, and usually the patient is fine to be discharged from the hospital the very next day.

The Karnataka BJP, which faced action on Twitter earlier this month over incendiary tweets, this time has passed the blame of Sangh Parivar sponsored Delhi violence to the victims.

In an insensitive tweet on Friday, it dubbed the protests against the notorious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as "fake" and added that the violence that followed was "the most well-planned assault on the Idea of India," in an apparent attempt to portray the victims as villains.

The handle, notorious for tweets targeting Muslims, blamed the clashes that erupted in Delhi between people demonstrating for and against the CAA on "so called 'Peacefuls'" - a known right-wing slur for Muslims.

Many people on social media called out the tweet for misleading people and covering up the role of Delhi BJP leader Kapil Mishra's provocative speech for triggering the violence or the failure of the Delhi Police, which reports to the former BJP chief and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in controlling the riots.

Earlier this month, the Karnataka BJP had tweeted a video of Muslim women standing in queue to vote in the Delhi elections, showing their voter ID cards, with the snarky caption: "Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR (National Population Register) exercise."

Soon after, the party unit's Twitter handle was blocked by the social media platform for 24 hours after many accused it of encouraging Islamophobia.

NPR has been widely criticised by opposition parties as a precursor to the government's planned NRC or National Register of Citizens which intends to make Indians prove their citizenship with documents that many poor or illiterate do not possess.

Many fear that combined with the already imposed CAA - which promises citizenship to only non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh - the NRC can be used to make millions of Muslims stateless.

The government has denied the allegation and said the CAA only intends to help those who have faced religious persecution. In recent weeks, it has gone back on its rhetoric on the NRC which was announced by Amit Shah in parliament as "it will certainly happen".

The CAA, which was cleared by parliament in December, has triggered deadly protests in the country which left at least 25 dead till Sunday. Since then, at least 42 more people have been killed as large-scale violence erupted in northeast Delhi and hundreds of homes and shops have been burned to the ground.

Jan 14: A day after it moved the Supreme Court against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Kerala government on Tuesday said it would continue its fight against the legislation as it "destroys" the secularism and democracy in the country.

The CPI(M)-led government had on Monday moved the apex court challenging the CAA and sought to declare it as 'ultra vires' of the Constitution. State Industries Minister E P Jayarajan told reporters here that the state has moved the apex court and will explore all options to fight the Act.

"The state government will to go to any extent and continue its fight against CAA. This Act destroys democracy in the country. This will only help in implementing the RSS agenda, to drive the nation through a fascist regime, and destroying the secularism and democracy in the country. The RSS and the Sangh Parivar cannot implement this law just by using muscle power," Jayarajan said.

Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran tweeted that the state became the first in the country to approach the top court against the Act. "Kerala government files lawsuit against the unconstitutional CAA. Kerala becomes the first state in the country to go to the Supreme Court against CAA.

"Kerala leads the way," he said in the tweet. In a suit filed in the apex court, the Kerala government has sought to declare that the CAA 2019 was "violative" of Article 14 (Equality before law), 21 (Protection of life and personal liberty) and 25 (Freedom of conscience and free profession, practice, and propagation of religion) of the Constitution.

It also claimed that the law was violative of the basic principle of secularism enshrined in it. The state Assembly had on December 31, 2019, passed a unanimous resolution against the CAA and became the first state to do it.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs of Government of India today clarified to the Lok Sabha in a written reply that the so called “Love Jihad” is not defined under the extant laws and no such cases have been reported by any central agency.

It was ministry’s formal response to questions about whether the central government is aware of the observation of Kerala High Court that there is no case of Love Jihad in Kerala.

“The term ‘Love Jihad’ is not defined under the extant laws. No such case of ‘Love Jihad’ has been reported by any of the central agencies. However, two cases from Kerala involving interfaith marriages have been investigated by the NIA,” said the reply.

Communal and anti-Muslim political outfits backed by a section of media often use the term “Love Jihad” to accuse Muslims of marrying Hindu and Christian girls and then forcing them to change religion. Dr Hadiya’s conversion was also termed ‘love jihad’ by the BJP and media. The Supreme Court finally ruled that it wasn’t.

In January 2020, an influential Catholic Church in Kerala had said that “love jihad is a reality” and alleged that scores of women from Christian community from the southern state were being lured into the trap of Islamic State and used in terror activities.

The Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had welcomed the Church statement and called for a united fight against ‘Love Jihad’ in Kerala Society.

The response comes weeks after the MHA, responding to an RTI query, said it has "no information" concerning the 'Tukde Tukde Gang' -- a term that has been used a number of times by PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to attack opponents.

The RTI application was filed by activist Saket Gokhle on December 26 last year. In his RTI application, Saket Gokhle said Home Minister "Amit Shah addressed a public event in New Delhi, and in his address said, 'The Tukde Tukde Gang of Delhi needs to be taught a lesson and punished'." Gokhle's RTI asked for details of the 'Tukde Tukde Gang'.

The home ministry, in its reply to Saket Gokhle's RTI application, said, "Ministry of Home Affairs has no information concerning tukde-tukde gang."
