PDO?suspended in manual scavenging case

Bengaluru, Jun 9: The state government on Thursday suspended a Panchayat?Development Officer (PDO) who reportedly forced two municipal workers to enter a manhole in Mysuru district.panchayath

Quoting a preliminary enquiry, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H?K?Patil admitted in the Assembly that the incident had occurred in Chamundi Hills panchayat limits in Mysuru district on Tuesday.

The enquiry revealed that PDO Anand, along with Chamundi Hills Gram Panchayat?president Geetha, forced two municipal workers — Chaluva and Ganesh — to enter and clean a blocked manhole in front of Geetha's residence.

An FIR?has been filed (No 164/2017) against Anand and Geetha at Krishnaraja Police Station. Patil said action will be initiated against Geetha as per Section 43(A)?(removal of members for misconduct)?of the Karnataka Gram?Swaraj and Panchayat?Raj Rules.

He was replying to a matter raised in this regard by the BJP. Leader of the Opposition Jagadish Shettar said the manual scavenging case in the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is unpardonable. The government must punish officials responsible for such an inhuman act.

Patil said Geetha had called Anand and complained about the blocked manhole. Anand told her that it was the duty of municipal workers to clean manholes and that they were appointed for that purpose. The media soon broke the story along with a video showing the two workers entering the manhole.

Manual scavenging has been banned and forcing municipal workers to clean manholes is a crime under Section 8 and 9 of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual?Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, the minister said.

Bengaluru, Apr 19: As many as 25 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in the State till now, said Karnataka's Health Department.

"25 new COVID-19 cases reported in the State from 5 pm Friday to 5 pm on Saturday. The total number of positive cases in the State is 384 including 14 deaths and 104 discharges," added the Health Department.

The Health Department has appealed to the doctors, who are willing to volunteer in the fight against coronavirus, to reach out to the government.

A total of 14,378 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the country so far, with 480 deaths being reported due to the virus.

Bengaluru, May 29: The hotel industry is one of the worst-hit industries due to lockdown, along with the tourism industry. Bengaluru's hotel industry has incurred a loss of around Rs 1200 crore during the lockdown period however, the hotels here are likely to open in June if the State government issues guidelines for the resumption of their services.

Speaking to media, PC Rao, President, Bangalore Hotelier's Association said, "It's not only the loss of business, but we have lost the customer base as well. 
We don't expect any good future for the next six months. There will be a slow down in the business even after opening."

"We have requested our CM to give first preference to the hotels. We are going to restart our business in June if granted permission. Around 10 per cent of the hotels cannot open at all. They are in the stage of merging or closing down position. Few hotels may open after five or six months," he added.

He continued saying that many hotels are for sale but there are no buyers. There are around 21,000 restaurants in Bangalore, 3500 hotels with rooms and restaurant which has an average turnover of Rs 20 crores per day, Rao informed.

"We expect losses of around Rs 1200 crores in these two months. We are giving special online training to all the hoteliers and to our managers particularly to deal with the COVID-19 situation, including how to deal with the guests, employees, how to start the hotel services. 

Each and every manager has already been trained and we are still continuing it. We will conduct face to face meeting as well and brief the managers," said Rao.

Kochi, Jan 22: Rail passengers from Kerala are a happy lot as the state’s traditional food items such as appam and eggcurry, puttu and kadala curry have found their way back to the revised menu of the Railways in the wake of protests over reports that they were replaced by north indian delicacies.

The popular Kerala dishes were reinstated to the list following social media backlash over the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation’s reported decision to replace the favorite cuisine of Malayalis from its menu with north Indian dishes such as Kachori and Chole Bhature.

Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, who had shot off a letter to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal raising the issue of alleged discrimination against Keralites, got an assurance from the IRCTC officials that popular items, including snacks such as unniyappam and sukhiyan will be served through its outlets in the state.

Eden said the IRCTC officials who visited him at his home on Wednesday morning have presented him with the list of delicacies to be served by its local vendors in Kerala. In his letter to the minister, the MP had stated that dishes which are very important to Malayalis for breakfast such as appam, egg curry, porotta, dosa, steam cake (puttu) were excluded along with snacks such as banana fry (pazham pori), kozhukkatta, unniyappam, neyyappam and sukhiyan.  He had also raised the issue of hike in price of food items.

According to him, price of meals has been increased from RS 35 to 70 and that ofsnacks such as vada from Rs 8 to 15.  While the price of vada has not been reduced, the fare of snack meal like parotta, chappathi, idiyappam, appam and puttu with kadala curry or egg curry will be served at Rs 50.  According to IRCTC, a passenger will have to shell out Rs 20 for unniyappam/sukhiyan/neyyappam, 2 numbers each.  Informing Goyal of the changes in menu, he said Malayalis are discriminated in trains and railway refreshment rooms by the food which is the right of every passenger.

He had sought urgent intervention of the Minister and speedy action in the matter.
