Mangaluru, Aug 31: Holding the politicians and their divide and rule policy responsible for the “intolerance” and “hatred” among the people in India, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) national vice president T Arif Ali called upon the people to uphold unity and brotherhood towards building a “powerful Hindustan”.

Addressing a public meet organised in the city on Tuesday as part of the nation-wide Peace and Humanity' campaign of the JIH, he described India as the land of “love and affection.”

He pointed out that India is still the biggest democratic set up in the world, with a powerful constitution, 6,000 plus languages and six prominent religions making for unity in diversity.

Though the people of the country love each other, the politicians are trying to divide them continuing the policies of Britishers who believed in divide and rule', he noted.

Expressing regrets over the violence being unleashed against Muslims and Dalits across the country, Mr Ali said that those in the government were promoting the hate-campaign and violence through provocative rhetorics.

He said that social media including Facebook and WhatsApp are widely being used to spread hatred against a particular community. Unfortunately, media, both print and electronic, are also spreading false news, thus impacting the mood of the society, he lamented.

Speaking on the occasion, human rights activist B T Venkatesh said that discrimination, inequality and hatred will destroy peace in the society. People should learn the values of constitution and follow them, he said.

Honorary president of reception committee of the campaign Satyanarayan?Mallipattana described the JIH campaign as a milestone in building a violence-free and peaceful society. Karnataka state unit of president of JIH Muhammad Atharullah Shareef presided over the programme. Catholic Diocese's Secretary M P Noronha also spoke.

How can you build a 'powerful HINDUstan if Hindus and Muslims are united? It will be MuslimHindustan. Unity among Hindus is more than enough to build a Hindustan. Muslims can go to Pakstan or Mecca.

Bengaluru, Jun 25: In the wake of unexpected surge in the coronavirus positive cases in Bengaluru, the special task force team assigned with the task of creating Covid Care Centres (CCC) has made elaborate arrangements the Haj Bhavan.

Civic authorities have already shifted around 50 Covid-19 patients to Haj Bhavan.

BBMP Commissioner B H Anil Kumar said on Thursday that due to an increase in the number of cases and due to shortage of beds in hospitals, the Haj Bhavan has been converted into CCC.

Headed by Rajendar Kumar Kataria, Secretary, Horticulture and Sericulture department, the CCC task force has arranged 400 beds at Haj Bhavan.

“The facility at Haj Bhavan has already been made operational. Doctors, nurses, paramedical and house-keeping staff from BBMP have been deployed as per SOPs. All essential equipment, medicines and other facilities have been made available in adequate numbers at the Haj Bhavan,” Kataria explained.

In the second phase, the task force team has identified hostel rooms of seven engineering colleges, which would fetch about 3,200 beds to house asymptomatic Covid-19 patients.

If need arises, the task team in the third and final phase, will consider the facilities such as Palace Grounds, Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre, Indoor Stadiums at Kanteerava and Koramangala to be converted as CCC.

Bengaluru, Jan 28: Brace for hefty traffic penalties as the state government is all set to reverse a notification on revised fines which came into effect last September following pushback from road users and opposition parties.

The Karnataka government will implement traffic penalties as stipulated in the amended Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, in a phased manner following a diktat from the Centre. The government did not specify the timeline for it.

“At a recent meeting of transport ministers from various states, the Union government explained why it wanted to implement these huge fines. We found it convincing and will implement it in its original form,” said transport minister Laxman Savadi on Monday.

Savadi said India’s image globally has taken a beating due to the high number of road deaths and the Centre wants to change it at any cost. However, he said the entire set of hefty fines would not be reintroduced all at once.

BJP govt revised rates in Sept

The BJP government last September had revised fines on compoundable offences and those which are fined on the spot by traffic cops by 50%- 80%, barring drunken driving and racing.

As per the revised rates, helmetless riding attracted a penalty of Rs 500 against Rs 1,000 notified by the Centre. Driving without a licence attracted a fine of Rs 1,000 for

two- and three-wheelers and Rs 2,000 for light motor vehicles as against the earlier Rs 5,000 for all types of vehicles.

The central government recently told states and Union Territories they should enforce fines as per the amended Act and they cannot be rolled back. The road transport and highways ministry said fines cannot be reduced below the minimum amount fixed by law, unless the President gives his assent.

Bengaluru, Apr 10: Renowned ophthalmologist and Narayana Nethralaya Chairman Dr K Bhujang Shetty today advised those wearing contact lenses to switch to eyeglasses as a preventive measure.

“Though the facial mask is mandatory as a preventive measure against the dreaded Coronavirus, not many know that the virus can also enter the body through eyes. Wearing glasses or spectacles reduces the spread of the virus,” Dr Bhujang Shetty said.

Although it is more likely that people may catch Coronavirus infections through mouth and nose, there are chances of the virus also entering through eyes. “In a day, humans tend to touch their face and eyes almost 20 times an hour knowingly or unknowingly. Users of contact lenses end up touching their eyes and face frequently, increasing the risk of infections. Therefore, it is advisable that they switch to eyeglasses until the situation improves”, according to a release here on Friday.
