The interactive session was organised by the Byatarayanapura and Hebbal mandals of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Sri Ramana Maharshi Heritage Auditorium in Sanjay Nagar.

Addressing the gathering, Goyal said, “GST is a transformative move which will benefit the poor, farmers and the middle-class the most. The credit goes not only to the prime minister but also to the different political parties for supporting it. This is an excellent example of cooperative federalism.”

Goyal and the commissioner for Central GST, Vivek Prakash then answered questions raised by the audience.

A member of the audience asked if a digital advertising company with turnover less than Rs 20 lakh sales would be exempted from GST. Goyal confirmed that it would be, as the exemption is applicable to service providers. He further added that any company which tried to falsely show turnover below the bracket would be caught.

“In GST, there is a reverse charge mechanism. Those who availed of the services will have to pay GST and through that we can know if the service provider is trying to evade tax,” he said.

When asked why petrol and diesel were not included in GST, Goyal said that states could not reach a consensus on this matter and it could be included in the future.

Answering a question on why there were tax rates higher than 28% in some cases, the commissioner said, “In some cases, the tax rate is more than 28% because of cess. This has been included to compensate states if they have a revenue-shortfall due to GST. But this is not a permanent feature and it will be removed later on.”

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Former Prime Minister and JDS supremo H D Devegowda on Thursday gave a clarion call to party workers to take steps to strengthen the party from the grossroots level and to 'expose the failures' and 'anti-people' policies of BJP government both at the Centre and State.

In an open letter to the workers here, he alleged that the urgent need is to create awareness among the people about failure of the governments which have brought in policies which are deterrent to the poor and downtrodden.

BJP government headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa in Karnataka has come up with an amendment to the Land Reforms Act,1961, which is 'against' interests of the small and medium farmers as even a non-agriculturist can purchase agriculture land, thus giving an opportunity to the rich people to 'exploit' illiterate farmers and purchase their land and use it for some other purpose after some time.

Mangaluru, Apr 13: Struck by the boredom of lockdown imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus, a 17-year old was caught on Sunday trying to sneak his friend out of his apartment complex by stuffing him inside a suitcase, police said.

"A minor, aged 17-years-old, a resident of Orchid Apartment, Balmatta invited his friend, a resident of Motisham Apartment, Pandeshwar to stay with him on April 11, Saturday," said PS Harsha, the Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru.

The friend wanted to return back to his apartment in Pandeshwar the next day but due to strict security put in place, he got inside a large trolley suitcase. Security guards at the apartment, however, got suspicious when they noticed the wobbling of the suitcase that was being wheeled to the gate.

Based on the suspicions, security personnel alerted the residents of the building and opened the suitcase from which they were shocked to find the boy's friend stepping out. Police were later called in.

A case has been registered against the two minors at the East Police station, police said adding that the duo will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.
