Petrol price cut by Rs 1.82/litre; diesel rate hiked by 50p

New Delhi, Aug 31: In a third such reduction in a month, petrol prices were reduced by Rs 1.51 per litre from midnight on Sunday while diesel prices were increased by 50 paise per litre excluding value added tax (VAT) .

Petrol price hikedThe cut in petrol price will be more after the local taxes or VAT is added to the base price. VAT varies from state to state. Consequently, in Delhi, the petrol prices will be cut by Rs 1.82 a litre to sell at Rs 68.51 a litre.

In Kolkata, petrol will sell at Rs 76.14 down from Rs 78.03 per litre. In Mumbai, it will sell at Rs 76.41 from the current Rs 78.32 per litre. In Chennai, the new rate of petrol will be Rs 71.55 from Rs 73.47 per litre.

Similarly, after adding VAT, the increase in diesel prices in Delhi will come to 57 paise. Diesel will cost Rs 58.97 per litre in Delhi as compared to the current rate of Rs 58.40.

At Rs 68.51, petrol prices are lowest since June 2013 when it was sold Rs 68.58 per litre. Indian Oil corp, the nation’s largest fuel retailer, said the downward trend in international prices has also warranted a cut in price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) by Rs 19 per 14.2-kg cylinder. Non-subsidised LPG is the one that household consumers buy after exhausting their quota of 12 bottles in a year.

Subsidised cylinder costs Rs 414 per litre in Delhi. A 14.2-kg non-subsided LPG cylinder will cost Rs 901 from Sunday against Rs 920 currently.

The rates for bulk diesel, which is priced at market rates, was cut by Rs 1.32 per litre in Delhi. As per government policy, bulk users like railways, defence and state road transport corporations buy diesel at market price, which is higher than pump rates.

Lucknow, Aug 2: Uttar Pradesh's cabinet minister for Technical Education Kamal Rani Varun succumbed to COVID-19 on Sunday at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Kamal Rani is the first minister in Uttar Pradesh to die after contracting coronavirus. She was 62.

On 18 July, the minister tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital.

She was later shifted to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the minister's death.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Adityanath said, "Kamal Rani Varun died on Sunday at around 9.30 am. She was an experienced and capable leader. She discharged her responsibilities with competence. She was a dedicated public representative, who was always working for the welfare of deprived and oppressed sections of the society."

Kamal Rani was the MLA from Ghatampur in Kanpur. She was also twice a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

Meanwhile, Adityanath has cancelled his visit to Ayodhya scheduled for the day, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Awasthi said on Sunday.

Jan 6: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday said the country's economy is not showing good signs though Prime Minister Narendra Modi has manifested tremendous leadership skills in fighting terror and in social welfare projects.

The fiscal decisions of the government have not yielded the desired results, the Rajya Sabha MP said here.

"Modi had shown tremendous leadership skill in fighting terror, in several social areas, micro areas like bringing toilets to every village home. But the economy is a complex system...," he said while taking part in a discussion.

While every minister is talking about a 5 trillion dollar economy by 2024, but the current GDP growth has to be multiplied in four years to achieve that, the former Union minister said.

He said, if wages are slashed as a measure to cope with the situation, labor will become cheap but that will also cut down the people's purchasing power triggering dip in demand, closing down factories and rise in unemployment.

"This is one problem for which you really need an economist," he said.

Swamy said in jest, "I think Modi has one problem with me. Not only I am an economist but also a politician."

New Delhi, May 22: India on Friday recorded its biggest spike in COVID-19 cases with 6,088 new cases and 148 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, taking the tally of coronavirus cases in the country to 1,18,447, as per the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

Out of the total cases, 66,330 are active cases and 3,583 have succumbed to the infection.

As many as 48,533 patients have been cured/discharged and one migrated till date.

Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-affected state with 41,642 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (13,967 cases), Gujarat (12,905 cases), and Delhi (11,659 cases).

While Rajasthan has confirmed 6,227 cases of which 3,485 people have recovered while 151 patients are dead, Madhya Pradesh reported 5,981 cases including 2,843 patients recovered and 270 patients dead.

Uttar Pradesh has 5,515 COVID-19 positive cases.

In Kerala, which reported the first COVID-19 case, 690 people have been detected positive for coronavirus.

Ladakh has confirmed 44 coronavirus cases, 1,449 people have infected by the virus in Jammu and Kashmir.
