Bengaluru, Oct 16: The Popular Front India proved its growing popularity in Karnataka as its grand conference in Bengaluru’s Palace Ground on Sunday drew an unprecedented crowd that braved the sudden rain and kept raising slogans till the end of the event.

Apart from the leaders of PFI and its political arm SDPI, many progressive thinkers and activists were also seen on the stage which was named after slain journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh, who in a previous PFI conference had urged the people to fight unitedly against communal forces.

Inaugurating the conference with a slogan “We also have something to say”, E Abubaker, Chairman of PFI, dared the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government and its agencies to prove the charges of anti-national activities levelled against his outfit.

“Sangh Parivar is levelling false and baseless allegations against PFI with the intention of imposing ban on the organisation. PFI leaders and activists are ready to face death penalty if the government proves the grave charges against them,” he said.

“They call us extremists. If raising voice against poverty, unemployment, exploitation and inequality is extremism, then we are proud to be extremists. RSS is dividing the country on religious lines. But we call for Hindu-Muslim unity,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Jnanaprakasha Swamji of Urilinga Peddi Mutt said that people from backward classes, Dalits and minorities should come forward to form a better society at a time when the rulers of the country are giving priority to cows over human beings.

“Unfortunately, now eating beef is considered as a bigger offence than massacring human beings. Let PM Modi build a country of cows and rule it. Let us unite and make India a pro-human country,” he said.

B T Lalitha Naik, Former minister, writer and Welfare Party of India leader, said that unity among Muslims, Dalits and backward classes will be the defeat of those who are trying to convert India into an undemocratic country.

Yasir Hasan, state general secretary of PFI, said that India doesn’t belong to communal forces. Condemning the attempts to impose ban on PFI, he said: “We are ready to sacrifice our lives, but won’t bow down to fascist forces”.

PFI state president Mohammed Saqib, said that his outfit is working towards empowering Muslim community besides raising voice oppression and inequality. He accused the Centre of using National Investigation Agency (NIA) to defame PFI.

Maulana Mohammad Umarain Mahfooz Rahmani, Secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Naseer Ahmed, Chairman of Karnataka Sate Minorities Commission, Yogesh Master, writer were present among others.

New Delhi, Feb 3: Congress leader BK Hariprasad on Monday condemned BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde's remark on Mahatma Gandhi and termed him as "son" of Nathuram Godse, the assassin of the freedom fighter.

"Only sons of Nathuram Godse can make such comments on Mahatma Gandhi," Hariprasad said.

Hedge had attacked Mahatma Gandhi by calling the freedom struggle led by him a "drama" and also questioned as to how "such people" come to be called 'Mahatma' in India.

"None of these so-called leaders were beaten up by the cops even once. Their independence movement was one big drama. It was staged by these leaders with the approval of the British. It was not a genuine fight. It was an adjustment freedom struggle," he had said.

The Trinamool Congress also lent its support to Congress as its leader Saugata Roy said people like Anant Hegde cause shame to the nation. "We are a supporter of Gandhi and they (BJP) are Nathuram Godse supporters. People of this country should see how BJP MPs are as they insult father of the nation," he added.

BJP leaders too found it difficult to defend Hegde on the controversial remarks.

Senior leader Jagdambika pal was cautious in his defence and said, "The whole world knows about Gandhi and it may be his personal opinion."

Whereas senior BJP leaders avoid commenting on Hegde, Union Minister Ashwani Choubey said that Hegde should not have made the comment and added that Gandhi is a well-respected figure in the nation.

Another BJP MP from Haryana Sanjay Bhatia also tried to shy away from making a direct comment and instead said," Congress did not implement what Gandhi preached. It is Prime Minister Narendra Modi who implemented Gandhi's teachings in letter and spirit."

Kasaragod, Mar 28: A pregnant Bihari migrant woman in labour gave birth in an ambulance after the Karnataka police allegedly refused to allow the ambulance carrying her to cross the border road to Mangaluru to reach her hospital.

The border road was shut due to the lockdown. The woman used to consult a doctor in Mangaluru across the border.

As Karnataka police stopped the vehicle at the border in Talapady, saying no vehicle, including ambulances from Kerala, could be permitted to their state, the drivers decided to take the woman was taken to the general hospital here, but she went into labour and delivered a baby girl in the vehicle

Both the mother and baby are doing fine, authorities said.

Hailing from Patna in Bihar, 25-year-old Gowri Devi and her husband were working in a local plywood factory in this north Kerala district, from where the maximum number of coronavirus cases have been reported so far in the state.

Those living in the border towns and villages of Kasaragod are dependent on the hospitals in Mangaluru as it is nearer, local people said.

The ambulance drivers- Aslam and Musthafa- said they stopped the vehicle by the wayside, making it safe for the woman. The baby girl and the mother were soon shifted to the government general hospital here and both of them are safe and healthy, they said.

Local people complained that not only pregnant women, but even patients requiring daily dialysis and emergency cardiac and cancer treatment were being sent back by Karnataka.
