PFI stages protest in Udupi against Uttara Kannada MP's anti-Islam remarks

Udupi, Mar 8: Protesting against the provocative remarks of Uttara Kannada MP and BJP leader Anant Kumar Hegde against Islam, the members of the Popular Front of India (PFI) staged a demonstration in front of the Clock Tower here on Monday.

Riyaz Farangipete, member of the State committee of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), said that Mr. Hegde's statement that terrorism could not be eliminated till Islam was existent, showed his anti-Muslim thinking. This statement was also against the spirit of the Constitution. Hence, legal action should be initiated against him, he said.

In order to protect the unity and integrity of the country, it was necessary to treat all religions and castes as equal. Elected representatives were expected to uphold the unity and integrity of the country and values of the Constitution. It was an ominous sign if they started giving such divisive statements were made.

Youth arrested under Pocso Act for impregnating his employer’s minor daughter

Mangaluru, June 16: A youth has been arrested by the sleuths of Ullal police station on charge of sexually assaulting a minor girl and impregnating her on the outskirts of the city.

The arrested has been identified as Lavakumar alias Shravan, a resident of Valacchil, who was working in a fast-food outlet at Thokkottu.

According to the police, the accused had sexually assaulted his owner’s minor daughter. The incident came to light when the girl’s mother came to know that former was pregnant.

It is said that the girl’s mother, who had employed the accused, allowed him to stay in their house. The accused befriended the minor girl and sexually used her.

Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother, a case was registered at Ullal police station under Pocso Act. The police arrested him yesterday and produced him before a local court.

Karnataka Budget session is likely to be shortened over Covid-19

Bengaluru, Mar 18: In the backdrop of the breakdown of the COVID-19 virus across the state, the ongoing Budget session of the Karnataka Assembly, which is scheduled to end of this month, is likely to be cut short by one week.

According to official sources, the state government, which had shut down all the congregating places including Malls, Theatres, Marriage Halls and banned all the public functions, is in favor of the cutting short the ongoing Assembly session, to give focus on keeping a tab on the COVID-19 disease.

Karnataka: Too many agencies muddle the process

Feb 3: The Karnataka government is probably the only state to have so many nodal agencies to deal with investment proposals. There is the KIADB, Karnataka Udyoga Mitra, State High Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC), State Level Single Window Clearance Committee (SLSWCC) and District Level Single Window Clearance Committee.

While the government claims these have been created to speed up the process of setting up industries, they’re only delaying it. “A four-to-five year delay in acquiring land has become the norm,’’ say industry sources.

“These entities are only adding layers of obstacles to investors and is not really helping industries,” said a senior IAS officer.

While DLSWCCs are headed by deputy commissioners are empowered to clear investment proposals up to Rs 15 crore, SLSWCC, headed by the industries minister, clears proposals more than Rs 15 crore and up to Rs 500 crore. Proposals worth more than Rs 500 crore have to be cleared by SHLCC chaired by the CM. These entities have to meet regularly and clear proposals. But often, these meetings don’t happen as scheduled. “The delay starts from here,” said Vasant Ladava, industrialist and member of Karnataka Industries and Commerce, Bengaluru.

The single-window agencies involving representatives of departments like industries, revenue, pollution control board and forest are supposed to collectively give necessary clearances required for industries. “But, of late, they have become only project approvers without other responsibilities, leaving investors in the lurch,” said Ladava.
