Mangaluru, Feb 23: Hundreds of activists of Popular Front of India on Friday converged in front of the office of deputy commissioner in Mangaluru to register their protest against Jharkhand’s BJP-led government’s decision to ban the outfit in the eastern state.

The protesters rubbished the Jharkhand government’s charge that PFI has connections to the so called Islamic State, a dreaded terror outfit, a blatant lie.

Raising slogans against the chief minister Narendra Modi–led union government and chief minister Raghubar Das –led Jharkhand government, the agitators said that it was Sangh Parivar that indulged in anti-national and terror activities, and not PFI.

Speaking on the occasion, Yasir Hasan, Karnataka state general secretary of PFI, said that his organisation is a hope for the downtrodden and deprived communities, backward classes and minorities in India.

He said that PFI would continue its agitation and counter the Jharkhand government’s decision legally.  He said PFI always believed and subscribed to the values of democracy and secularism fought for the rights of deprived classes.

SDPI DK district president Athaullah Jokatte, DK district Imam’s council president Rafeeq Darimi, PFI DK district general secretary Abdul Khader were present among others.

Protests in other parts of DK

The PFI activists staged similar protests in other parts of Dakshina Kannada districts too. The Bantwal and Farangipete units of PFI staged a protest in front of Mini Vidhana Saudha in BC Road.

Addressing the protesters, PFI district committee member Ashraf Machar said that since 2015 PFI has been a headache for the BJP govt in Jharkhand because they raised voice against its misrule. Unable to counter PFI, the government imposed ban on it, he said.

Another protest was held at Vittla junction. PFI Bantwal taluk president Imthiyaz Ahmed, speaking on the occasion, called Sangh Parivar an anti-national organisation. “Sangh Parivar should be banned in India and not PFI,” he said, adding that PFI will strengthen its presence in Jharkhand in coming days.

The Jharkhand govt’s claim

In a statement, the Jharkhand government on February 20 said: "The state has banned the Popular Front of India, which is active in Jharkhand, under the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1908. The Home Department had recommended the ban."

"The PFI is very active in Pakur district. The members of the PFI, which was set up in Kerala, are influenced by the IS. According to Home Department report, some PFI members have even gone to Syria from southern states and are working for the IS," the government’s statement added.

Bengaluru, Jan 12: Chief Justice of India, Sharad Arvind Bobde on Saturday hinted at the possibility of Artificial Intelligence being developed for the court system while making it clear that it will never replace human discretion.

Speaking at an event here, Bobde said, "We have a possibility of developing Artificial Intelligence for the court system. Only for the purpose of ensuring that the undue delay in justice is prevented."

"I must make it clear at the outset as there are times when even judges have asked this. AI is not going to replace human judges or human discretion", he added.

Sharing more details of his vision, he stated, "It is only the repetitive, mathematical and mechanical parts of the judgments for which help can be taken from the system...we are exploring the possibility of implementing it."

Bobde stressed on the requirement of developing AI for judiciary while outlining the number of pending cases in different courts.

"Some people are in jail for 10-15 years and we are not in position to deal with their appeals. The high court's and Supreme Court take so long and ultimately the courts feel that it is just to release them on bail", he said.

Bobde also endorsed employing every talent and skill to ensure delivery of justice in a reasonable time.

"We must employ every talent, every skill we possess to ensure that justice is received within reasonable time. Delay in justice can't be a reason for anybody to take law into their hands. But it's very important for us as courts to ensure there's no undue delay in justice", he said.

CJI Bobde also highlighted the need for pre-litigation mediation and said, "Pre-litigation mediation is the need of the hour especially in the backdrop of a significant pendency that the courts are tackling with. There are innumerable areas where pre-litigation mediation could solve the problem."

He also stressed that the position of a judge is very unique under the constitution and they have to deal with a variety of problems.

"The foundation of civilisation rests on the law. Judicial officers have to deal with a variety of problems...Judges without adequate knowledge, skills and experience may cause distortion, delay and miscarriage of justice", he said.

Earlier in the day, Chief Justice of India Bobde inaugurated the phase-1 of the new building of the Karnataka Judicial Academy on Crescent Road in Bengaluru.

The new building has three floors, besides, the ground floor and two basement floors.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.
