PIL seeks criminal action against protesting doctors

Bengaluru, Nov 16: A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in High Court of Karnataka, seeking direction to the state government to make arrangements for medical service during the state-wide medical strike by doctors that begins from Thursday.

On Thursday over six hundred private clinics will be closed and 22,000 doctors from across the state will go on strike as mark of protest against the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (Amendment) Bill .

The petition filed by Amruthesh N P , an advocate, seeks immediate restoration of medical assistance and services to patients across the state in all the private medical establishments for the welfare of the public.

The petition also seeks invocation of Essential Maintenance Services Act 1968 (ESMA) for banning the strike.

The petitioner has highlighted the fact that already 10 deaths have occurred as a result of the ongoing strike . He also stated that denial of right to medical assistance to the citizens is violation of fundamental rights.

THE PIL also seeks invocation of stringent action on the medical associations participating in the strike and declaring the strike as illegal and unconstitutional. The petition also demands initiation of criminal action against the doctors and private medical establishments for denying medical services to the needy patients in the state.

The petitioner has also stressed on the need for beginning a strong dialogue between the state government and the medical associations for an effective cooperation.

A similar petition has been filed by D V Adinarayana Shetty, a resident of Nelamangala seeking issue of directions to the state government to make immediate arrangements for timely treatment and medical care during the strike.

39-yr-old woman, 42-yr-old brother end lives by self-immolation in Bantwal

Bantwal, Jun 16: Two unmarred siblings committed suicide by self-immolation at Sangabettu in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada last night.

Neelayya Shettogar (42) and his sister Kesari (39) poured petrol on themselves before torching themselves at around 11 p.m. on June 15 inside a room of their house, police sources said. The siblings were reportedly facing health problems.

Neelayya's brother and latter’s wife were sleeping in the other room of the same house when the incident took place. They came to know only when they heard the screams of the duo.

Even though the siblings were rushed to the government hospital at Bantwal with the help of locals, the doctors declared them dead.

Bantwal rural police sub-inspector, Prasanna and staff visited the spot as part of investigation.

Very sad. What happening to our youths. Are they going crazy or the mountain fell on them? Why do our people are becoming so coward? I think many are going under depression. Govt should set up rehabilitation/counselling centres in each Mandals/Taluks/Districts to treat such people.

12 test covid positive in DK including 4 Sharjah returnees; 14 new cases in Udupi

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 24: Dakshina Kannada reported 12 new coronavirus positive cases where as neighbouring Udupi district reported 14 new cases today. Dakshina Kannada also reported a covid related death.

Among the 12 cases in DK, 8 are males and 4 females. Four among them had recently come from Sharjah. One is suffering from severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and seven with influenza like illness (ILI) symptoms.

In Udupi, there were two children among 14 people who tested positive today. There are 8 males and 6 females. Nine are Maharashtra returnees, one has travelled from Bengaluru, three have contracted infection from P-3851, and the source of infection of one more patient is being traced.

Karnataka announces special relief package for cobblers, leather workers

Bengaluru, May 8: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has announced a special package for those involved in leather works, especially those who work on the roadside, informed the state's Deputy Chief Minister Govind M Karjol on Friday.

The special package has been announced for cobblers and leather workers, who work on the roadside.

The government has provided relief to 11,722 families at a rate of Rs 5,000 per family. These beneficiaries will be directly credited to their bank account through Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation.

This special package will help livelihoods for skilled workers, said the Deputy Chief Minister. He congratulated the Chief Minister on the declaration of this special package on behalf of the Department of Social Welfare.
