Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 31: Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday held a meeting with the CPI-M and BJP-RSS leaders following violence over the killing of an RSS worker and announced an all-party meeting on August 6 to bring about peace.

Addressing reporters after the hour-long meeting, Vijayan said peace talks were held in Kannur three months ago, but they failed to yield the desired result as violence again broke out in a few districts.

“It was decided then that no violence should take place, but that did not happen in Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam. Here the homes of councillors were attacked. The meeting condemned the attacks on the homes and the office of the BJP here. We will hold district-level peace talks and then on August 6 an all-party peace meeting will be held here,” said Vijayan after the meeting at state-owned Mascot Hotel.

Monday’s meeting comes a day after Vijayan was summoned by Kerala Governor P Sathasivam in the wake of the deteriorating law and order situation following the murder of an RSS worker.

The first to arrive for the meeting was state Bharatiya Janata Party President Kummanam Rajasekharan along with his team, including Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief P. Gopalan Kutty.

Vijayan then arrived along with CPI-M state Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.

Vijayan, upon arriving at the venue, lost his cool when he saw the media taking visuals of the meeting.

He directed his ire towards the manager of the hotel, and then while waiting at the entrance of the hall he asked the media to get out.

Vijayan entered the hall only after all the media personnel had exited.

When the media later asked why he was angry with them, Vijayan ignored their query. He explained the outcome of the meeting and left.

Rajasekharan said the meeting went off well. “We explained our position, and stressed that the right to work in a political party should not be curbed,” he said.

“The need of the hour is that police should be given a free hand. This is not happening as the police remain mute spectators when the ruling party workers go berserk. Had the police been allowed to do their duty by intervening whenever there is a law and order issue, matters would not have reached this stage. We have agreed to cooperate in restoring peace,” said Rajasekharan.

Vijayan on Sunday promised that action would be taken against law-breakers irrespective of their status and political affiliation.

The governor on Sunday in a tweet quoted Vijayan as saying that he would meet both state BJP President Rajasekharan and the state RSS chief and also make a public appeal for peace.

RSS worker E Rajesh, 34, was hacked here on Saturday night. He died at a private hospital.

The police have arrested eight persons who were involved in the crime and are on the lookout for two more.

Meanwhile, the Congress party held a meeting here on Monday condemning the “blood bath” being resorted to by the two parties (CPI-M and BJP-RSS). Leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala said the two parties are hand in glove and that’s the reason why the media was chased away.

“It’s ironic that Vijayan held peace talks, after sending out his cadres to commit murder,” said Chennithala.

New Delhi, Mar 19: Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes on Wednesday extolled the virtues of 'gaumutra' and shared an anecdote about a man claiming to have cured his cancer by drinking cow urine to drive his point home.

Participating in a debate in Rajya Sabha on two bills for setting up national commissions for homoeopathy and Indian systems of medicine, the former Union minister said, "My extreme friend Jairam Ramesh pulls my leg, when I talk of 'gaumutra'."

Sharing an anecdote, Fernandes said once during a visit to an ashram near Meerut he had met a person who claimed to have cured his cancer by drinking 'gaumutra'.

Many BJP leaders have earlier spoken about the healing power of 'gaumutra'. The Congress has reacted sharply to such remarks.

He also praised the virtues of the Indian systems of medicine. He said when he had severe pain in knee joint and doctors had suggested for replacement surgery. However, he refused and started doing 'Vajrasana'.

"I started Vajrasana, practising yoga, and today I am able to do wrestling without any difficulty," the septuagenarian leader said.

"When (former) prime minister (Atal Bihari) Vajypee ji had a knee surgery, I thought if I had known him earlier, I would have definitely gone to him and ask him to follow 'Vajrasan' and it could have been cured," he said.

He also claimed to have met a person in US aged around 104 years and moving swiftly as a young man.

"Yoga is our wealth. If you practise yoga, may be our budget cost of health can be reduced by 50 per cent. It's way of life," he said.

"Our own Indian systems of medicine will provide a lot of reliefs even before going to a doctor," he said.

Though Fernandes supported the bills but raised objection over the exclusion of yoga and naturopathy.

"I would urge the minister either to amend the bill or bring an assurance that it will bring a separate legislation to cover yoga and naturopathy," he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 18: The government slammed Kerala’s tourism department for putting out a tweet on Sankranti Day, promoting ‘beef ularthiyathu’, a specialty in that state, but the move backfired spectacularly with Karnataka’s tourism minister being heavily trolled.

After Kerala put out its advertisement, state tourism minister CT Ravi, seizing the opportunity, took a dig at the Left government in Kerala, saying, “Welcome to Karnataka”. He followed that up with another tweet listing delicious “vegetarian” dishes of coastal Karnataka — a coastline which runs to Kerala.

“Welcome to Karnataka to bring out the Vegetarian in you. Enjoy the flavors of Tulu Nadu – Pathrode, Kotte Kadubu, Halasina Hannina Gatti, Avalakki Upkari, Badanekayi Mosaru Gojju and a whole lot of authentic food to hit Your tastebuds,” Ravi’s tweet read.

Ravi’s tweet sparked a debate between those for and against eating beef, including legislators like Sowmya Reddy (Congress) and Shobha Karandlaje (BJP). Some pointed out that Karnataka is 80% non-vegetarian and an appropriate response to beef curry would have been “pandi curry” (wild pig curry) — a Kodagu specialty.

Realising his tweets were getting more negative than positive traction, Ravi quickly amended his stand and on Friday tweeted: “Nati Koli Saaru Mudde. Aw! Delightful Delicacy of Old Mysuru region. Farm bred Chicken traditionally cooked to perfection and served with the soft Ragi Mudde. You will ask for more !!!”
