PK surpassesMumbai, Dec 21: Aamir Khan did it last winter with 'Dhoom: 3' and now with 'PK', the versatile actor once again seems to be setting the box office on fire. His latest release, which is riding high on word of mouth, has minted over Rs.25 crore in the domestic market on its opening day, according to trade experts.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film released Friday, and evening and night shows witnessed good growth on day one.

According to a source, the film has collected Rs.26.63 crore in India, making it the second highest non-holiday opening after 'Dhoom: 3'.

Trade analyst Komal Nahta, who has praised the film, tweeted: "#PK 1st day all-India net collection: approx. Rs. 25.6 crore. Phenomenal considering that it's a social film. Word of mouth is fantastic."

Girish Johar, who is aware of the economics of the Hindi film industry, shared on Twitter: "As predicted, #PK Day1 with 26.5crs aprox is 2nd Highest-Non Holiday start after #Dhoom3 beating #Kick! Top two slots belong to @aamir_khan (sic)."

Going by the reviews and feedback, the weekend will be fruitful for the film, which also stars Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani.

Members of the film fraternity have lauded the movie already for offering entertainment with a purpose.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has called it "game changing" cinema, while Shekhar Kapur has appreciated it for giving precedence to quality over "box office numbers".

Trade experts had conjectured that the movie could touch Rs.300 crore and turn into Bollywood's biggest ever entertainer too. But whether that happens, is yet to be seen in the forthcoming days.

Mumbai, Jan 7: Actor Anil Kapoor, who next will be seen onscreen in Malang, revealed that he always tells superstar Aamir Khan not to stop working with filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani.

Kapoor was interacting with the media at the trailer launch of Malang along with his co-actors Adtiya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Elli AvRam, film's director Mohit Suri and producers Luv Ranjan, Bhushan Kumar, Ankur Garg and Jay Shewakraman on Monday in Mumbai.

Anil Kapoor has worked with many directors and producers in his 40-year acting career.

Talking about camp culture in the Hindi film industry and praising makers of Malang, Kapoor said, "I feel we need producers like Ankur (Garg) and Luv (Ranjan). I have told Mohit (Suri) to continue doing films with them. I always tell Aamir Khan by calling him on the phone to say that you should not leave Raju Hirani (Rajkumar Hirani). Whenever I see films of both of them, I tell Aamir not to leave him."

He continued, "I feel whenever you make a good team then you should hold on to it. Team is very important and there are certain stars that come together to make something interesting and exciting."

Kapoor gave an example of Hollywood actors and filmmakers while backing his viewpoint.

"If you see Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio they do so many films together. They can work with others, too, but they keep working with each other. There is some magic, obviously. You have to go with the casting but somewhere I feel teams should stand by each other," the actor added.

Malang stars Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Khemu in lead roles. It is scheduled to release on February 7.

Mumbai, Jul 25: Movie theatres have been shuttered for months due to the coronavirus pandemic in the country, but the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has now recommended that the Union Home Ministry allow cinema halls to reopen in August.

I&B Secretary Amit Khare indicated this at a close-door industry interaction with the CII Media Committee on Friday. He said Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla at the Home Ministry would take the final call.

Khare said that he has recommended that cinema halls may be allowed to reopen all over India as early as August 1, or at the latest, around August 31.

The formula suggested is that alternate seats in the first row and then the next row be kept vacant, and proceeding in this fashion throughout.

Khare said that his ministry's recommendation takes into consideration the two metre social distancing norm, but tweaks it gently to two yards instead. The Home Ministry, however, still has to revert on the recommendation.

Cinema owners, present in the interaction, however, pushed back and said this formula is unwise and merely running films at 25% auditorium capacity is worse than keeping the cinemas shut.

The attendees at the meet included media CEOs like N.P. Singh of Sony, Sam Balsara (Madison), Megha Tata, (Discovery), Gaurav Gandhi (Amazon Prime), Manish Maheshwari (Twitter), S. Sivakumar (Bennett Coleman and Co Ltd), and K Madhavan, Star & Disney, and also Chairman, CII Media Committee.

The OTT platforms present, including Gandhi of Amazon Prime, did not push back. Some Bollywood producers, notably those of Amitabh Bachchan's Gulabo Sitabo, have posted their movies on OTT, rather than live out the lockdown uncertainty.
