PM an instrument of corruption, says Rahul Gandhi

Shillong, Feb 21: Congress President Rahul Gandhi here on Tuesday mocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi by calling him an instrument of corruption.

The Congress President while addressing the media during a roadshow here said, "Modi is not against corruption, he is an instrument of corruption."

Rahul Gandhi's statement comes as the country is mired in several scams - Punjab National Bank scam, in which celebrated jeweler Nirav Modi and Gitanjali Gems owner Mehul Choksi cheated the bank to the tune of Rs 11,700 crore, and Rotomac founder Vikram Kothari's non-payement of loans of up to Rs 300 crore to banks.

"The Bharatiya Janata Party comes to Meghalaya and offers crores of Rupees to the churches of the state.

Just like they think they can buy some Congress MLA's and form the government here, they also think they can come here and buy the church, the religion, and the God. This is disgusting," he said.

The Congress President is in the state for a roadshow here, ahead of the 60-member legislative assembly poll on February 27.

Led by one of its last remaining regional satraps Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Meghalaya is a high-stakes election for the Congress, particularly to contain its eroding political presence in the Northeast.

Congress is fighting regional forces like Conrad Sangma-led homegrown National People's Party (NPP), a rare pre-poll alliance of the United Democratic Party, Hill State People's Democratic Party and Garo National Council as well as the new entrant BJP.

In the run-up to the state polls, the incumbent party faced a series of defection with some of its top leaders joining NPP and a few joining the BJP.

Results of the elections in Meghalaya, Tripura, and Nagaland will be declared on March 3.

Cong is known for soft Hindutva; Rahul, Priyanka following it: Kerala CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 6 : Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that Congress is known for adopting a soft Hindutva agenda and that there was nothing new in the remarks of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi on Ayodhya temple construction.

"I am not surprised regarding, Priyanka Gandhi's remark on Ayodhya. From Rajiv Gandhi and Narasimha Rao, Congress had followed a similar stance. I don't think Congress has any stand when it comes to secularism.

If it was the case, then our country would not have reached such a level," the chief minister said when asked about the 'Bhumi Pujan' ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya on Wednesday.

"There is nothing new on Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi's position on the issue. They are following the Congress' soft Hindutva agenda. There is no element of surprise," Vijayan said.

Further, Vijayan said that CPI(M) Politburo had made clear the party's viewpoint on the Ayodhya temple construction.

"When it comes to Ayodhya issue. I want to ask who had allowed worship there. It was Congress. Who had allowed to lay the idol there? It was Congress.

Who gave permission to Karseva? It was Congress. Even when it came to demolition of Babri Masjid too who shut their eyes and gave a silent nod for it- wasn't it the Congress regime at the centre? And Muslim League (IUML) was part of it. These are all part of our history," said Kerala Chief Minister.

He said instead of involving in discussions on it, more time should be utilised towards containing the COVID-19 spread in the country and helping the poor who are suffering due to the pandemic.

Expats' dead bodies returned back to UAE from Delhi Airport; Indian govt's move shocks families in India

Dubai, Apr 26: Families were shattered as the three dead bodies of UAE-based Indian expats were returned to the country from New Delhi, India.

Family members waited outside the Indira Gandhi International Airport for hours, but they were later told to go back home as the remains of expats Jagsir Singh, Sanjeev Kumar and Kamlesh Bhatt were flown back to Abu Dhabi, following a new order implemented by India's Ministry of Home Affairs.

Inderjeet, brother-in-law of Sanjeev based in Al Ain, said their family in Punjab was devastated.

"This is a non-coronavirus death. We had a death certificate as proof and all necessary documents from Indian Embassy. But the body was returned while our family members waited outside the airport. This is very shocking," Inderjeet said.

"The body shouldn't have been returned. It's difficult to travel across states due to Covid-19 restrictions and also to arrange the ambulance," he added.

"Now the embassy has told me to come on Sunday. They said hopefully things will be sorted out in a day or two."

Meanwhile, the family of Kamlesh resides in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. This means, with existing travel restrictions, they had to secure permits from different states to reach New Delhi.

Dubai-based social worker Girish Pant, who is in touch with the family, said they are all depressed with the unfortunate turn of events.

"His brother Vimlesh had to return home without the remains. They are all clueless and in pain. With the new order from the Ministry of Home Affairs, I have informed the family that the body will reach them within 48 hours. I am also coordinating with the Indian Embassy," Pant said.

Insensitive and inhuman, says Rahul Gandhi on Modi govt’s decision to freeze DA

New Delhi, Apr 24: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has termed the government decision to freeze Dearness Allowance of Central government employees for a year as "insensitive and inhuman."

The former Congress President in a tweet said: "Lakhs and crores are being spent on the Bullet Train and New Delhi's Central Vista which should have been suspended, but the government has deducted DA of Central government employees and pensioners... It is insensitive and inhuman."

"The tragic part is that by deducting this amount from January 1, 2020 up to 30th June, 2021 for a period of 1.5 years, the government of India proceeds to deduct almost Rs 38 thousand crore from the income of these middle class government employees and pensioners, who rely completely on the pay and pensions that they receive," said Randeep Surjewala, chief spokesperson of Congress.

There are about 50 lakh such serving government employees and about 62 lakh pensioners.

"Even more tragic and objectionable is the fact that the government of India has not even spared our armed forces. The government has deducted Rs 11 thousand crore of the 15 lakh serving armed forces personnel and nearly 26 lakh military pensioners. What is their fault? They are serving the nation in times of all types of crises," said Surjewala.

The Congress alleged that the government did not spare the savings scheme.

Instead of curbing the wasteful expenditure, the government has been constantly hitting at the income of government employees and the middle class, it added.
