New Delhi, July 15: The Congress Party on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for calling it a "Muslim party", and said that his "sick mindset" was an issue of national concern.

"With his statements, the Prime Minister not only disrespects history but also undermines the achievements of India. This sick mindset of his is an issue of national concern. The Prime Minister gives out statements which are wrong as per history and facts," Congress leader Anand Sharma said at a press conference here.

Sharma further alleged that due to his lack of knowledge, Prime Minister Modi writes his own history.

"The Prime Minister is for entire India and not only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His main political rival, Congress party has led nationalist movements and struggle for freedom. Calling the party a 'Muslim party' is not befitting of a Prime Minister. He has less knowledge of history. He writes his own history," he said.

Sharma also suggested Prime Minister Modi to maintain a list of Congress leaders who have served as Presidents in his office.

"He (Prime Minister Modi) will have to be reminded that presidents of the party were Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Lala Lajpat Rai, Maulana Azad. It will be better if he keeps a list of Congress Presidents in his office. Maybe then he will leave his habit of giving wrong statements," Sharma said.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi had asked if the Congress was only for Muslim men, and not women.

"I have read that Congress president (Rahul Gandhi) has said that Congress is a party of Muslims. I am not surprised as when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister, he had said that Muslims have the first right over natural resources. All I want to ask is that is their party only for Muslim men or for women too?" he said a rally in Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur.

In response to the same, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the Prime Minister was afraid of defeat in the upcoming general elections, and was spreading hatred and fear in the society.

"Undermining the position of the Prime Minister, Modiji has been caught spreading false rumours about Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi. But he should know that the descendants of Godse's ideology can never defeat Gandhi's ideology. The people want to know when black money come back to the country, when will fuel prices go down and when will 'acche din' come? But it seems that 'acche din' will only come when Modi will be voted out of power," he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Ayodhya to lay the foundation of the Ram temple. He participated in the bhoomi poojan rituals at the temple site and offered prayers. He will shortly lay the foundation of the temple with a sliver brick.

From Varanasi to Tamil Nadu, many devotees have sent gifts for the ceremony, like silver bricks and coins.

Special prayers were started on Monday and will culminate with the PM laying the foundation stone for the temple. The city has been decorated with paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana. The Uttar Pradesh government has also made elaborate security arrangement for the event.

Apart from the state police, the NSG commandos have also been kept on stand-by. The invitations for the ceremony have been kept limited due to the coronavirus pandemic. Veteran BJP leaders LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi will witness the event from New Delhi via video-conferencing.

New Delhi, Jun 11: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday said the religious and constitutional rights of minorities are absolutely safe in India and it does not need any certificate from anyone as communal harmony and tolerance are in the DNA of the country and its majority community.

Comments of Rijiju, a Buddhist, came after a top Trump administration official has said that the US is very concerned about what is happening in India in terms of religious freedom.

"India doesn't need certificate on communal harmony and tolerance which is in the DNA of India and the majority community in India," Rijiju, who holds the charge of the Union minister of state for minority affairs besides being the union sports minister, said in a statement.

Rijiju said the social, religious and constitutional rights of minorities are absolutely safe in the country.

"A few politically intolerant people are trying to create an atmosphere of fear and intolerance. As a member of the minority community, I feel India is the best country in the world for the minorities," he said.

Samuel Brownback, the US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, said on Wednesday that India has been a country area that spawned four major religions itself.

"We do remain very concerned about what's taking place in India. It's historically just been a very tolerant, respectful country of religions, of all religions," he said.

The trendlines have been troubling in India because it is such a religious subcontinent and seeing a lot more communal violence, Brownback said.

His comments came after the release of the '2019 International Religious Freedom Report'.

Mandated by the US Congress, the report documenting major instances of the violation of religious freedom across the world was released by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the State Department.

India has previously rejected the US religious freedom report, saying it sees no locus standi for a foreign government to pronounce on the state of its citizens' constitutionally protected rights.

"India is proud of its secular credentials, its status as the largest democracy and a pluralistic society with a longstanding commitment to tolerance and inclusion", the government had said earlier.

Ghaziabad, Jul 28: Days ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, Nand Kishore Gurjar, a BJP MLA from Loni assembly constituency in Ghaziabad, has stoked controversy as he asked people celebrating the festival to "sacrifice their children instead of animals" on the occasion. He also claimed that "meat spreads coronavirus" so people should not be allowed to sacrifice innocent animals.

"People who want to sacrifice on Eid should sacrifice their children. I will not let people consume meat and alcohol in Loni. We will not let people sacrifice innocent animals because meat spreads coronavirus," the BJP legislator said while speaking to reporters.

"The way people have followed the guidelines of the government by not offering prayers and namaz at temples and mosques to contain COVID-19, in the same way, they must not give the sacrifice of animals on this Eid," he added.

"Earlier, sacrifices of animals used to be done in Sanatan Dharam as well. However, now coconut is offered instead. I request the Muslim brothers not to give 'qurbani' of animals. We will stop those who will perform the ritual animal sacrifice. We will not let this happen in Loni," he said.
