Police break glass, rescue drunk woman driver

Mumbai, Jun 16: A 42-year-old woman from suburban Bandra here was booked for alleged drunk driving after she tried to escape the alcohol test and sped away in an inebriated state, police said today.

drunkThe woman, Shivani Bali, a resident of Worli in South Mumbai was intercepted near Bandra Reclamation last night after Mumbai Police stepped up its enforcement drive against drunk driving following the Janhavi Gadkar case.

According to police, when Bali was asked to stop her car for taking a breath analyser test, she initially tried to escape but later stopped her vehicle at a distance.High drama ensued for two hours past midnight when the woman refused to come out of the car and locked herself inside the car with the AC on.

"Not only did she refuse to come out from the car, but started smoking cigarettes at regular intervals with doors closed," said B D Mane, a traffic policewoman who was present at the spot.

"There was a lot of smoke inside the car and anything could have happened due to extreme suffocation. So we had to break the glass and rescue her," another officer said.

We have registered a case against the woman and she has been charged under Section 185 (drunken driving or driving under the influence of drugs) of Motor Vehicle Act and Section 110 (pertaining to indecent behaviour in public) of Bombay Police Act, a police official from Bandra Police station said.

She was later released on a chalan of Rs 2000, police said.Last week, Janhavi Gadkar, a 35-year-old corporate lawyer allegedly rammed her car under the influence of alcohol, into a taxi killing two persons on the Eastern Freeway here.Following the mishap, traffic police has instructed its team to keep a check on women drivers.

Thane, Apr 24: A 34-year-old man was allegedly attacked on suspicion of being a COVID-19 patient and died after falling into a gutter during the assault in Kalyan town of Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning, when Ganesh Gupta had stepped out of his home to purchase some essentials amid the COVID-19 lockdown, an official said.

On noticing some policemen manning the street, the victim took an alternate route, where a few passersby assaulted him after he coughed while walking, he said.

The men suspected him of being a COVID-19 patient and attacked him, causing him to fall into a gutter and die, the official said.

The deceased's body was sent for post-mortem and a case of accidental death has been registered as of now, the station house officer of the Khadakpada police station said.

Noida, Jul 28: A doctor admitted at a private hospital in Noida has been accused of sexually harassing a patient in his isolation ward, where both were undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the police said.

The 20-year-old woman, in her complaint to the police, alleged that the incident took place on Monday and based on that a case was filed at the local expressway police station, they said.

A senior police official said an investigation is underway and there might be lapses on part of the hospital which allegedly admitted a man and a woman in the same isolation ward, in violation of the norms.

The woman and the doctor had tested positive for coronavirus last week, according to officials.

"The woman was in the isolation ward of the private hospital. There was a man, a medical practitioner, who too was infected with coronavirus and was sharing the ward with her," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.

He said the woman alleged molestation and upon being informed, the police immediately lodged a case and initiated a probe into the matter.

"There appears to be some irresponsibility on part of the hospital too. We are communication with the medical departments to check whether the patients were being kept in accordance with the guidelines," Mr Singh said.

He said the accused is still in isolation but the police will reach out for his statement following due protocols of COVID-19.

"All necessary action will be taken as per the truth that will emerge after a thorough investigation," Mr Singh said.

New Delhi, Jan 11: Assets worth Rs 78 crore have been attached by the ED in connection with a money laundering probe against former ICICI Bank Chairman Chanda Kochhar and others, officials said on Friday.

A provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been issued for attachment of the properties that includes Kochhar's Mumbai-based house and some other assets belonging to a company linked to her, they said.

The book value of the attached assets is Rs 78 crore, they said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is probing Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and others in a case of alleged irregularities and money laundering in giving loans by the bank to the Videocon group.
