Bidar, Jul 20: Two more persons would have succumbed to the mob fury at Murki over child lifting rumours, but for the swift action of the police. Mohammed Azam (28), a software engineer from Hyderabad was killed in an accident triggered by the rumours on July 13.

Mohammed Afroz, a resident of Handikera in Kamalangar taluk, had invited his three friends - Salam (who works as a constable in Qatar), Azam and Mohammed Salman for a dinner at his house on July 13. Afroz recalled the turn of events on the fateful day.

“The three had come from Hyderabad in a rented car. We all went to see a check dam since the food was yet to be prepared. On the way, Salam threw a chocolate he had brought from Qatar towads children who were returning home from school. As we stopped our vehicle near the checkdam, some people mistook us for child lifters and attempted to deflate the tyres. As we objected, they attacked us,” Afroz said.

“As large number of people gathered there and the situation took a serious turn, the three left the spot in their car, leaving me there. The villagers attempted to intercept the vehicle by placing a log on the road. As Salam drove the vehicle in shock, it fell down from the bridge. A villager tied the hands of Azam and dragged him from the vehicle. Some people threw stones on the car. Though police tried to control the mob, people clubbed Azam to death,” he said.

Afroz added that they too would have been murdered if the police were not at the spot.

A police officer said that their appeal to villagers not to take law into their hands was not heeded.

“People threw stones on us. But we were able to save the lives of two under such critical situation. It appeared there was no value for humanity,” the officer said.

The Kamalanagar police collected evidence at the spot of the incident on Thursday.

Bengaluru, Jun 19: Congress leaders BK Hariprasad and Naseer Ahmed filed their nominations as party candidates for Legislative Council elections in Bengaluru and KPCC chief DK Shivakumar said that the two leaders have been given ticket to strengthen the party with their guidance.

"The Legislative Council means the Upper House and the Elders House. We have unanimously agreed to select and send these two senior leaders to discuss the party organization and various issues of the state in Legislative Council. There were plenty of aspirants to enter the Upper House. But it is decided to elect these two leaders and they will contest the election," Shivakumar said.

"We need seniority to guide us... That's the reason we are selecting these leaders... The high command has given these senior leaders the opportunity to discuss with all our leaders about strengthening the party," he added.

The elections are scheduled to be held on June 29.

Bengaluru, Mar 2: The Opposition Congress and the JD(S) members protested in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Monday over the BJP leader Basavaraj Patil Yatnal's alleged derogatory remark against veteran freedom fighter H S Doreswamy.

Opposition Leader in the Assembly and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, raised the issue, immediately after the obituary reference of sudden demise of former Minister C Chanigappa, and sought permission from the Speaker to raise the issue of Yatnal's outburst in the House stating that the matter of hurling defamatory remark against Gandhian Doreswamy, by Mr Yatnal, was very much serious. However, the treasury bench members protested and urged the Speaker not to allow the matter to discuss as the issue was not in the agenda.

The Speaker, Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri, promised the Congress leader about permitting the issue after the House adopts resolution on the thanksgiving motion for the Governor's address of the joint House recently and asked Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to continue his reply to the Governor's address.

The opposition Congress and the JD(S) members, protesting the Speaker's action, trooped into the well of the house and raised slogans against the BJP government.

The Chief Minister continued his reply amidst the din before the Speaker adjourned the House for 30 minutes after the House adopted the thanksgiving motion to the Governor's Address.
