Police seize 38,000 fake Rs 2,000 notes; Gujarat tops

New Delhi, Dec 31: The Rs 2,000 note is in existence for just about a year but counterfeiters have not lost any time in faking it.

Police across the country have seized around 38,000 fake notes in the past one year with Gujarat topping the list.

The speed with which the fake currency racket started printing counterfeit Rs 2,000 notes can be gauged from the fact that authorities seized 3,199 such notes within 50 days of its existence - between November 9, 2016, when it was introduced and December 31, 2016.

Official statistics show that 34,728 fake notes with a face value of Rs 2,000 each were seized in the first 11 months of this year, with Gujarat topping the list for both the years.

While 6,397 notes were seized in Gujarat since demonetisation was announced on November 8 last year, the Northeastern state of Mizoram had a seizure of 5,827 notes followed by Uttar Pradesh (5,243), West Bengal (2,876) and Kerala (2,648).

Karnataka also finds a spot in the top ten list with a ranking of nine. Police seized 1,831 such notes, including 255 in the first 50 days of the introduction of the notes.

Officials said the seized fake notes of Rs 2,000 and other denominations are of "low quality, such as scanned or photocopies of genuine notes".

Another interesting point is the continuing seizure of Rs 1,000 notes, which were rendered illegal after demonetisation. This year 66,284 notes of Rs 1,000 denomination have been seized, with Delhi (40,363) and Gujarat (22,515) topping the list.

Overall, police seized 2.66 lakh fake notes of various denominations, which has a face value of Rs 18.80 crore, till this November.

The statistics for the first 11 months itself has crossed the 2016 figures on face value. While the number of notes seized was higher at 2.90 lakh for the whole of 2016, the face value was lesser at Rs 16.55 crore.

Dirbrugarh, Feb 4: Three persons, including two BJP activists, have been arrested for allegedly attacking the residence of Union minister Rameswar Teli during anti-CAA protests in Assam, police said on Monday.

The house of Teli, Union Minister of State for Food Processing, in Upper Assam's Duliajan town was attacked on December 11 during the statewide stir against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

"Based on CCTV footages, Debajit Hazarika, Vicky Sonar and Arup Kahar were arrested. We had picked them up on Sunday," Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police, Sreejith T told PTI.

A total of 18 persons have been arrested so far for allegedly attacking Teli's house, he said.

"These three persons were also involved in pelting stones on a police party during protests in Duliajan," Sreejith said.

A BJP source confirmed that Debajit Hazarika and Vicky Sonar are party activists.

Family members of the accused have given statements to the police on the arrested persons' alleged role in violence and attacking Teli's house, sources said.

When contacted, Teli said, "I do not know for what reasons they were apprehended. But if police arrested them after proper investigation, then there must be some truth. The trio stays near my house. They always attended my programmes with their families."

A total of 88 people have been arrested so far from Dibrugarh district for their alleged involvement in violence during protests against the Act.

New Delhi, Jul 27: India’s coronavirus epidemic is now growing at the fastest in the world, increasing 20% over the last week to more than 14 lakh confirmed cases, according to Bloomberg’s Coronavirus Tracker.

Infections in the South Asian nation of 130 crore people have reached 14.3 lakh, including 32,771 deaths, India’s health ministry said, with daily cases close to a record 50,000 on Monday. India is only trailing the US and Brazil now in the number of confirmed infections, but its growth in new cases is the fastest.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are among the states where the maximum number of daily cares are being reported. The world’s second-most populous country has been ramping up testing, with 515,472 samples taken on Sunday, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Still, India and Brazil have some of the world’s lowest testing rates, with 11.8 tests and 11.93 tests per 1,000 people respectively, compared to the US with 152.98 tests per 1,000 and Russia with 184.34, according to Our World in Data, a project based at the University of Oxford in the UK.

New Delhi, May 12: A total of 12 special evacuation flights from across the globe will bring home stranded Indians on the sixth day of 'Vande Bharat Mission' on Tuesday.

The special flights include Air India flight from Manila to Ahmedabad, London to Hyderabad, Newark-Mumbai-Ahmedabad, AI flight from Singapore to Delhi, AI flight from Dhaka to Srinagar, Dammam to Kochi, Kuala Lumpur to Mumbai, Manila to Delhi, Muscat to Chennai, Dubai to Kannur, Dubai to Mangalore and Singapore-Bengaluru-Kochi.

Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, India is conducting 'Vande Bharat' Mission -- its biggest ever repatriation exercise since independence -- to bring back stranded Indians from abroad, including from the US, the UAE and the UK.

On the fifth day of Vande Bharat Mission, as many as 1,667 Indian nationals were repatriated from different countries in eight special flights.
