Politicising Lingayat religion issue will not yield results in polls: BSY

Bengaluru Dec 19: BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa on Monday said any effort to politicise separate Lingayat religion demand will not yield results ahead of the Assembly polls in Karnataka.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Yeddyurappa said the BJP will abide by the decisions taken by Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha and Siddaganga Mutt seer Shivakumara swami on the issue. "There is no change in our stand. We will abide by the decisions taken by the Mahasabha and swamiji," he said.

Yeddyurappa has accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of politicising the demand for separate religion tag for Lingayat community for electoral gains. The BJP leader said that AICC president Rahul Gandhi's efforts to divide the state on caste and community lines in Gujarat for the sake of votes had failed miserably.

To a query, whether the BJP was apprehensive whether the Congress will adopt Rahul's "temple visit" strategy in Gujarat to cut into Hindu votes in Karnataka, Yeddyurappa said, "At least for the sake of election, he (Rahul) visited temples. I hope Siddaramaiah, on the same pretext, visits Sri Krishna temple at Udupi". Yeddyurappa was referring to Siddaramaiah skipping entering Sri Krishna Temple during his visits to Udupi.

With the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections over, Yeddyurappa said that he will request BJP national President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to spend more time in Karnataka and address party conventions ahead of the next year's Assembly elections.

Don’t send me to Mumbai; I will be killed there: Ravi Poojary to cops

Bengaluru, Feb 29: Gangster Ravi Poojary, who was arrested from Senegal earlier this week, and is being interrogated by the Cental Crime Branch (CCB) police, wants to evade the Mumbai police for any kind of inquiry. Claiming that there is a serious threat to his life, he is believed to have told his investigators that he should not be sent there. Poojary is being grilled by the CCB for his alleged involvement in numerous cases.

“He is aware that he will be given to the custody of Mumbai police as he had committed several crimes before fleeing India and also made hundreds of extortion calls to the well-heeled there. Hence, he has started requesting us not to send him to Mumbai. He claimed that he has many rivals there and they may go to any extent to get him killed,” a source said. Poojary was once an associate of dreaded underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Poojary has little option but to face Mumbai cops

Poojary had left Dawood’s gang and had joined Chhota Rajan, who split from D-Company and established his own network. There were also attempts by Dawood’s men to assassinate Rajan on a few occasions. During his days in Mumbai, Poojary was also reportedly facing threats from Dawood and other gangsters. “Since Poojary had jumped bail in the murder case of a gangster in Mumbai and f l e d the country, he has no option but to face trial again. Besides, he has made over a hundred extortion calls to businessmen and celebrities in Mumbai in the last two decades.

It’s inevitable for him to face inquiry by the Mumbai police,” an official said. “Now that he knows his options are limited, he is requesting us not to send him to Mumbai under any circumstance, claiming that he faces a serious threat to his life by Dawood’s aides and others. However, when we are done with questioning him, and if Mumbai police approach the court, it will decide whether to give him to their custody or not,” the official added. Poojary, who was brought to India on February 24, has been remanded to police custody till March 7. The police are likely to seek extension of his custody as he is facing close to 100 cases in Karnataka.

Cases filed in 4 states the gangster, originally from Malpe in Dakshina Kannada, has cases against him in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. At least 46 cases are registered in Bengaluru alone.

Nearly 30 injured as Mangaluru-Bengaluru bus falls into trench

Puttur, Jan 4: As many as 27 passengers travelling in a private bus escaped with minor injuries after it toppled and fell into a roadside trench at Amai near Perne on Mangaluru-Bengaluru national highway last night, police said on Saturday.

Police said that the driver of the Bengaluru-bond bus lost control over the vehicle while traversing through the narrow bridge at Amai.

The bus was damaged in the mishap.

In Mangaluru pro-CAA rally Rajnath Singh rakes up Kashmiri Pundit issue

Mangaluru, Jan 27: No power can now stop Kashmiri Pandits from going back to Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday, forcefully defending the NDA government’s decision to reorganise Jammu and Kashmir and abrogating its special status under Article 370.

Addressing a massive pro-CAA, NRC rally organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party at Gold Finch city, Kuloor, on the outskirts of the city, the Defence minister also sent a strong message to Pakistan and said India will not let anyone live in peace if it is harmed.

"We will not touch anyone, but if someone bothers us, then we are not going to let them live in peace," he said.

Referring to the exodus of a large number of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in the late 1990s at the height of militancy, Singh said no power now can stop them from returning to their homes.

On the Citizenship Amendment Act, the minister said it is not a law to hurt the sentiments of any religion but to give relief to victims of religious persecution.

Mahatma Gandhi had told Nehru to give citizenship to minorities like Hindus and Sikhs if they come to India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has fulfilled that vision by bringing in the law, Singh said.

On several non-BJP states refusing to implement the CAA, the defence minister said it it is a central law and everyone should follow it.

Accusing the Congress of misleading people on the issue, he said the party should not forget its duty towards the nation just because it is in opposition.
