Jaipur, Dec 1: Polling began on Sunday in 199 Assembly seats in Rajasthan to decide the fate of 2,087 candidates including Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and BJP’s Chief Ministerial nominee Vasundhara Raje.

Over 4.08 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in 47,223 polling booths. Polling will take place between 0800 hours and 1700 hours.

Of the 200 Assembly seats, polling has been adjourned in Churu constituency, where nine people were in the fray, to December 13, following the death of BSP candidate Jagdish Meghwal.

There are 166 women and one eunuch candidate contesting the polls.

Mr. Gehlot, Ms. Raje and BJP leader Gulab Chand Kataria cast their votes in their respective constituencies.

At many polling booths in Sanager and Malviya Nagar Assembly seats of Jaipur, voters were seen approaching poll booths while on their morning walk.

Congress and BJP have fielded 200 candidates each, BSP 195, CPI(M) 38, CPI 23, NCP 16, other parties 666 and Independents 758 (including Churu constituency).

Police control room said, “Voting began peacefully and there is no report of any untoward incident.”

Of the 4.08 crore-strong electorate, 1.92 crore are women. The results will be declared on December 8.

Mr. Gehlot is contesting from his home turf of Sardarpura seat in Jodhpur district against BJP’s Rajput candidate Shambhu Singh Khetasar while Congress’ woman NSUI leader and former MLA Meenakshi Chandrawat is fighting against Ms. Raje from the Jhalarapatan seat in Jhalawar district.

Mr. Gehlot along with his wife Sunita, son Vaibhav and daughter-in-law imanshi cast their votes at Vardhman Jain upper primary school in Mahamandir area of Jodhpur.

He, while expressing confidence of retaining power for second consecutive term, rejected any impact of BJP Prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on the elections.

“There is a wave in favour of Congress. Ours campaigning was a positive one and we did not touch a low like BJP leaders. We gave positive message to the people and they will vote for development and works done by our government,” he told reporters.

Asked who will become the next chief minister if the party is voted to power, he said it would be decided by the party high command.

2 booth capturing bids foiled

Two alleged booth capturing bids were foiled in Rajasthan’s Bhratpur district during the State Assembly elections on Sunday.

“Several people tried to storm into a polling station for suspected booth capturing in Dhabak area in Nagar constituency but were pushed outside,” Bharatpur District Collector Neeraj K. Pawan told PTI.

“Sector magistrate informed me that he was threatened by a MLA and her supporters. Additional force was rushed to the area immediately and the situation is under control,” he said, adding, that the polling remained unaffected.

In Mawai area, some people also tried to capture a booth but the situation was soon brought under control, sources said.

Mumbai, Jan 30: Speaking at an event, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Azmi's son and businessman, Farhan Azmi said that if CM Uddhav Thackeray will build lord Ram's Temple at Ayodhya then he will build Babri Masjid there. He said, "My problem is with Uddhav Thackeray.

I respect him a lot and if in Shiv Sena somebody really deserves respect, then it is no other than Uddhav Thackeray. He never runs a government and I don't think he is running his party correctly.

If being the Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray says he is going to Ayodhya on 7th March, I will also go with him. He will build lord Ram's Temple and we will build Babri Masjid."

Mumbai, Jan 30: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has arrested Dr Kafeel Khan from Mumbai airport for allegedly making inflammatory statements at AMU during protests against the Citizenship Amendments Act (CAA) last month, officials said.

Khan was arrested on Wednesday night with assistance from Mumbai Police at the airport when he arrived in the city to attend anti-CAA protests, an official said.

"Officials of the UP STF arrested Dr Kafeel Khan in a case which was registered at Civil Lines Police Station under section 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) of IPC. Our police team helped our UP counterparts on their request," said an official from Mumbai Police.

He claimed that Khan had made inflammatory statements on December 12 last year during the protest near Bab e Syed Gate outside the Aligarh Muslim University in front of more than 600 students.

The official also alleged that the Gorakhpur doctor had made objectionable comments against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The FIR against Khan mentions that Swaraj India's president Yogendra Yadav was also present during the speech at AMU.

Following the arrest in the case, Khan was taken to the Sahar Police Station and after completing formalities he will be taken to UP on transit remand, the official said.

Khan, a paediatrician, had come to the limelight in 2017 when a controversy broke out after the death of over 60 children in less than a week at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, UP.

New Delhi, Jan 1: Union Minister Prakash Javadekar launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress for allegedly inciting violence in Delhi against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Mr Javadekar said the violence over the amended citizenship law that broke out in areas like Jamia Nagar, Seelampur and Jama Masjid "cannot be forgiven".

"In Jamia, the Congress' Asib Khan and AAP's Amanatullah Khan delivered inciting speeches. They spread disinformation. The law is to give citizenship to people and not take citizenship away," Mr Javadekar told reporters.

He said the people of India understand the plans of the Congress and the AAP and both parties should apologise.

"We will bring out the truth. The fight is between anarchists and those who oppose them. Our agenda would be wholesome development of Delhi. The AAP strangulated municipal corporations' attempt on development. Rs 900 crore was not given. Today, the people of Delhi are surprised that the AAP slept through all these 4.5 years and in the remaining six months they have launched schemes," Mr Javadekar said.

"The work is done by someone else and the credit is taken by a different individual," the Union Minister said, referring to allegations that the government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took credit for work done by BJP-ruled municipal agencies.

"Who did fogging in dengue season? Our corporations organised an awareness drive against water accumulation and dengue cases went down. During corporation polls, Kejriwal said don't choose BJP as dengue will claim lives. Now he is also claiming credit for decrease in dengue cases because of the work done by these corporations," Mr Javadekar said.

"I am an environment minister. We worked on pollution control. There is no limit to their (AAP's) lies. About unauthorised colonies, the AAP says we have not regularised it. We made a law signed by the President, yet they spread lies," Mr Javadekar said.

The election in Delhi will be held before the end of February.
