Poojary continues to target Karnataka govt over Yettinahole, ACB

Udupi, Mar 27: Congress leader B Janardhan Poojary has continued to exert pressure on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to drop the proposal to set up an Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Yettinahole diversion project.Poojary

Speaking to media persons, the former Union minister said the chief minister's hasty decision to set up an ACB will cost the government in terms of support from the public. He said that by setting up the bureau, the chief minister would weaken the Lokayukta institution. “A person who is charged under some crime will be probed by two separate institutions by filing cases in both in ACB?and Lokayukta.

Setting up of two separate institutions to investigate a single case is not permitted by the Constitution and it has been clearly mentioned in the Article 20,” he insisted.

He accused the chief minister of intending to hand over cases pertaining to his government and officials to the newly created investigation agency, the ACB.

Mr Poojary said that the government should give up the Yettinahole project as it would not only create a host of environmental problems but also lead to chronic water shortage in Dakshina Kannada district.

He said the Uppinangady region in Dakshina Kannada was prone to water shortages during summer. The Yettinahole project would only worsen the problem there. The river diversion project would not only affect people but also the fragile biodiversity of the Western Ghats.

Mr. Poojary said it was a tragedy that all ministers, parliamentarians and legislators of all parties of the Coastal districts were backing the Yettinahole project despite knowing it was disastrous to these districts. “In fact, it is their duty to save the Netravati River, which is the lifeline of the Coastal districts,” he said.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should undertake a tour of the regions from Gundia to Kumaradhara and listen to the opinion of the people. This would give him a first-hand knowledge of the problems faced by the people in Belthangady region of Dakshina Kannada due to the Yettinahole project, he said.

Bengaluru, Feb 23: As India gears up to welcome Donald Trump on his maiden visit to the country, a kite artist flew a special 15-feet long kite to welcome the US President.

VK Rao, an international kite artist from Karnataka, crafted the special kite, which included the photographs of both Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the messages 'Namaste Trump' and 'Welcome to India'.

Speaking to ANI, Rao said: "We have created and flown this special kite to welcome the US President. The kite is 15 feet long."

Earlier, an Amritsar-based kite maker in Punjab had designed special kites to welcome Trump.

"As Donald Trump will be visiting India, so I have made some kites to welcome him. There are kites with pictures of PM Narendra Modi and Donald Trump," said Jagmohan Kanojia, the kite maker.

Preparations are on across the country to welcome Trump, who is scheduled to visit India on February 24 and 25.

During the visit, Trump is scheduled to participate in a roadshow with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will address a gathering at the Motera stadium.

On Monday evening, the President and his family will be visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Bengaluru, Mar 14: Amid coronavirus threat, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has ordered shutting down for a week of all places/activities where people gather in large number including swimming pools, shopping malls, schools, colleges, cinema halls etc, state Health Minister B Sriramulu said.

This comes after Yediyurappa chaired an emergency meeting with ministers and senior officials on Friday to discuss the situation.

Earlier, schools in the state had announced early summer vacation for their students this academic year as a precautionary measure. Other public places have been shut down in the state amid the Covid-19 scare.

The shut down in Karnataka comes after various other state governments ordered similar steps. Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir etc. are some of the states where governments have ordered shut down as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

The central government has also taken several steps to contain the virus, including suspension of all visas to India till April 15. Till date, India has reported two deaths and 82 confirmed cases of the deadly coronavirus.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. The virus, which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan last year has spread to more than 100 countries worldwide, infecting over 1,30,000 people.

New Delhi, Jan 19: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Sunday asserted that every state assembly has the constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek the amended Citizenship Act's withdrawal, but if the law is declared constitutional by the Supreme Court then it will be problematic to oppose it.

His remarks came a day after he had said there is no way a state can deny the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) when it is already passed by the Parliament.

"I believe the CAA is unconstitutional. Every State Assembly has the constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek its withdrawal. When and if the law is declared to be constitutional by the Supreme Court then it will be problematic to oppose it. The fight must go on!" Sibal said in a tweet.

His remarks on the CAA at the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF) on Saturday had caused a flutter as several non-BJP governments, including Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra, have voiced their disagreement with the CAA as well as National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

"If the CAA is passed no state can say 'I will not implement it'. It is not possible and is unconstitutional. You can oppose it, you can pass a resolution in the Assembly and ask the central government to withdraw it.

"But constitutionally saying that I won't implement, it is going to be problematic and going to create more difficulties," said the former minister of law and justice.
