Pope Francis celebrates Christmas Eve Mass after year of peace pleas

Vatican City, Dec 25: Pope Francis has celebrated Christmas Eve Mass in a packed St Peter's Basilica, rounding out a year marked by his pleas for the world to better protect innocents caught up in wars, migrations and abject poverty.

As the Sistine Chapel choir sang "Gloria" and the basilica's bells rang out across Rome, Francis yesterday processed to the altar behind cardinals draped in golden vestments for the service celebrating the birth of Jesus.

The late night Mass was the first major event of the Christmas season, followed by Francis' noon Urbi et Orbi (To the city and the world) blessing on Christmas Day.

Francis has spent much of 2016 bemoaning the Islamic extremist violence that has driven Christians from Mideast communities that date to the time of Christ. He has demanded Europe in particular do more to welcome refugees, saying Jesus himself was a migrant who deserved more than being born in a manger. And he has denounced the wasteful ways of the wealthy when children and the poor die of hunger every day.

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 24: Dakshina Kannada reported 12 new coronavirus positive cases where as neighbouring Udupi district reported 14 new cases today. Dakshina Kannada also reported a covid related death. 

Among the 12 cases in DK, 8 are males and 4 females. Four among them had recently come from Sharjah. One is suffering from severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) and seven with influenza like illness (ILI) symptoms.

In Udupi, there were two children among 14 people who tested positive today. There are 8 males and 6 females. Nine are Maharashtra returnees, one has travelled from Bengaluru, three have contracted infection from P-3851, and the source of infection of one more patient is being traced.

Bengaluru, Mar 31: The total number of positive cases of coronavirus reached 101 in Karnataka on Tuesday after 13 more positive cases were reported in the state from March 30 5 pm to 2 pm today.

The total number of 101 includes three deaths and 8 discharged/cured cases, Karnataka Health Department stated.

Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 1,397 after 146 new patients were reported in the last 24-hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Tuesday.

Of this little less than 1,400 cases, there are 1,238 active while 124 cured. The total figure also includes 35 fatalities.

Bengaluru, Feb 28: Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Friday said that Section 144 will be imposed near Vidhana Soudha for Budget session starting from March 2.

"Section 144 of the CrPC (prohibits assembly of more than 4 people in an area) will be imposed in the area around Vidhana Soudha from March 2 to March 31 ahead of the Budget session,"Bhaskar Rao said.

The police said that they have intelligence inputs of protests near Vidhana Soudha.
