Mangaluru, Jul 17: The Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to fill potholes on all roads maintained by it in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi from July 23 to make them motorable, said Minister for Urban Development and Housing U T Khader.

Addressing media persons after a meeting with MLAs from both the districts to discuss road issues yesterday, the Minister said that the PWD maintained 112 roads in Dakshina Kannada and 119 roads in Udupi. The department has also been instructed to clean the storm-water drains to prevent damage to roads.

If any roads are left out without the potholes being filled, people can call officials of the department concerned and send messages through WhatsApp to them.

The telephone numbers of some of the senior officials are: Superintending Engineer, Mangaluru Circle, B.T. Kantaraj 9448319640; Assistant Executive Engineer, Mangaluru Division, Yashwant Kumar S. 9483614354); and Executive Engineer, Udupi Division, K.S. Chandrashekar 9448428545). People should inform the elected representatives if any roads are left unattended to, Mr Khader said.

The officials have been instructed to ensure that the contractors carry out quality work.

Referring to the span of Moolarapatna bridge across the Phalguni collapsing last month, he said that the department has been asked to explore whether it was possible to repair the bridge with the help of the Indian Army. The PWD has estimated that it might require Rs. 7.50 crore to repair the bridge. Constructing a new one would cost about Rs. 18 crore.

The Minister said that the MLAs, who attended the meeting, were asked to send proposals for road development works worth Rs. 50 crore in each Assembly constituency. The MLAs would have to identify such roads on priority.

Mr. Khader said that a master plan for the growth of Dakshina Kannada would be prepared by consulting all stakeholders. The master plan would identify development works required in specific areas such as tourism and road connectivity. A delegation of MLAs and other elected representatives of the district would be taken to Delhi to meet the Ministers concerned to address issues relating to railway projects, sea erosion, highways and the like.

Rajesh Naik U. and D. Vedavyasa Kamath, MLAs, and Ivan D’Souza, MLC, were present.

Bengaluru, May 18: Over two months after his appointment as the Karnataka Congress President, DK Shivakumar is likely to take-over the reigns of the party officially on May 31.

"There are two dates, May 31 and June 7. He is most likely to officially take over as KPCC President on the 31st," sources close to Mr Shivakumar told PTI.

After remaining in a virtual vacuum for nearly three months, the party high command on March 11 appointed Mr Shivakumar, known to be the Congress' chief troubleshooter in crisis situations, replacing Dinesh Gundu Rao as KPCC chief.

Mr Rao had quit the post in December 2019 after the party's dismal show in the bypolls when it won only two of the 15 seats and yielded 12.

Congress sources said once the appointment letter came from the high command, he has been KPCC president and officially taking charge was just a formality.

"He will be officially handed over the party insignias and responsibilities relating to bank accounts and cheques, among other things, that has been traditionally followed," they said, adding the official take over was delayed by the coronavirus.

After his appointment as KPCC president, Mr Shivakumar has been meeting a host of senior party leaders and leading the party in the fight against coronavirus.

These include setting up of Congress' COVID-19 task force, alerting the government in its management of the crisis, holding weekly video conferencing with leaders of party's local units to gather information, among other things.

Sources close to Mr Shivakumar said the official take over would be a simple event, looking at the current situation due to the pandemic.

"Very few select party leaders and office bearers, say about 50 odd people, are likely to be in attendance at the simple event at KPCC office," they said, adding that arrangements may be made to telecast the event live for the benefit for party workers and local leaders.

A six-time MLA, Mr Shivakumar had a long wait for his appointment to the coveted post, due to opposition within. There were reports that Congress Legislature Party leader Siddarmaiah had lobbied in favour of one of his confidants for the top job.

In a first, appointment of three KPCC Working Presidents- Satish Jharkiholi, Saleem Ahammed and Eashwar Khandre, was seen as an attempt by those apposing Mr Shivakumar, to weaken his hold on the party.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: Karnataka High Court on Friday ordered notice to the state government and self-styled godman Swami Nithyananda while hearing a petition seeking cancellation of bail granted to him.

A petition was filed in the Karnataka High Court on Friday seeking cancellation of bail granted to Nithyananda for skipping the trial and fleeing the country.

Justice John Michael Cunha, after hearing the complainant, ordered issuance of notice to the state government and Nithyananda and posted the matter for hearing next week.

The petition, filed by K Lenin, alleged that Nithyananda has been skipping trial and has fled the country on an expired passport.

The plea further said that Nithyananda was making false representations in his "exemption petitions to the trial court as if he is still in India".

Interpol has also issued a 'blue corner notice' to locate the self-styled godman, who is facing trial in a criminal case, on the request of Gujarat Police.
