Prakash Rai booked for violating poll code

Bengaluru, Mar 22: The flying squad officials have registered a case against multilingual actor-cum-activist Prakash Rai, who has filed his nomination papers to contest independently for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency, on the charge of violating the model code of conduct.

In a complaint to the police on March 19, Murthy D, a flying squad official for the 163 Vidhana Sabha constituency, stated that Prakash Rai had used a mike and campaigned for elections at a public rally held at the Mahatma Gandhi Circle near M G Road on March 12. 

The rally was organised by one Praveen K and Abhilash C S under the banner Media and Freedom of Expression and it was a non-political programme. Several writers, artistes and activists attended the programme where Prakash Raj used the mike and began to canvass seeking votes, Murthy stated in his complaint.

A whatsapp video footage as evidence of Rai speaking on the mike was handed over to police. The footage was recorded by some people on their mobile phones who attended the programme and forwarded it to the flying squad officers. 

By the time, the flying squad reached the spot, the programme was over and people had dispersed. Permission was taken to conduct a non-political programme but Prakash Raj used it as a platform canvassing for the election. This amounts to violation of the model code of conduct, Murthy said in his complaint.

The Cubbon Park police have booked Praveen, Abhilash and Prakash Rai under various sections of the Representation of People's Act and also under the Karnataka Police Act.

Mangaluru, Jul 5: A veteran politician and former union minister has repeatedly tested positive for COVID-19 in the Dakshina Kannada.

The former minister, who resides in Bantwal taluk, is said to be asymptomatic.

His wife and children have also tested positive for the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, one of the kin of the former minister said that he is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru. "He is asymptomatic and doing well," he said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 15: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan''s daughter Veena married top DYFI All India president Mohammed Riaz at the chief minister''s official residence in the presence of selected guests.

Riaz and Veena became husband and wife at a solemn function held under Covid protocols with not more than 50 people present.

This was the second marriage for both, as their first ones ended in divorce.

Riaz has two children, while Veena has a son from their respective previous marriages.

Riaz is a lawyer by profession and had contested the Kozhikode Lok Sabha seat in 2009 but lost to the Congress'' M.K.Raghavan.

Veena runs her own software company in Bengaluru.

While the marriage has already been registered recently, the wedding event was a closed door affair, with just very close relatives of the couple besides a few senior party colleagues of Vijayan.

Belagavi, Apr 19: Veteran writer and Translator Chandrakanth Kusnoor passed away in his house on Sunday due to age-related disease.

He was 90.

He was survived by wife, four sons and one daughter.

According to family sources, the last rites were held in the wee hours of Sunday.

Mr Kushnoor, a multi-faceted personality, maybe the one of the few who had won the Karnataka Nataka Academy, Karnataka Lalitha Kala Academy and Karnataka Sahitya Academy awards for his works as writer, translator, novelist, poet, playwright, painter, art critic and institution builder.

He had translated many books from Kannada (late U R Ananthmurthy and Srikrishna Alanahalli) into Hindi, and other books into Marathi and Urdu.

He was among the pioneering abstract writers in Kannada. His plays like Dindi, Vidushaka, Ratto Ratto Rayara Magale and Ani Bantu Ondu Ani, were widely performed.

His biographical novel Gohar Jan chronicles the growth of professional theatre music tradition.

He had converted his home in Channamma Nagar into a mini art gallery and used to paint till recently. He hailed from Kalaburagi where he worked as a college professor for some years. He had settled in Belagavi after his retirement as the Deputy Director of Kannada and culture.

He had won the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award.
