Wading into the Mahadayi river row, multi-lingual actor Prakash Raj on Thursday said that “we Kannadigas have a right to the water”.

The issue has taken over the political discourse in Karnataka, with pro-Kannada outfits staging a state-wide bandh against the Centre’s inaction over the river sharing dispute with Goa.

The dawn-to-dusk bandh coincides with BJP’s chief Amit Shah’s visit to Mysuru for a public meeting.

Tech giants Wipro and Infosys have declared a holiday for their employees, while passengers have been left stranded at bus depots in Bengaluru.

Metro services in the city remained unaffected. Schools in southern districts of Mandya and Bengaluru will remain shut for the day, but those in northern districts like Gulbarga are functioning as normal.

The pro-Kannada outfits have also called for shutdown in the Congress-ruled state on February 4, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits poll-bound Karnataka.

I dont think so he will join in political party and contest in election. Basically he is a communist ideology believer and in Karnataka left party alone cant make govt. Congress or other party alliance needed. But no other party wont follow communist ideology (which does not mean communist ideology is bad. I mean congress or other political party doesnt have proper ideology)

Mangaluru, Feb 5: ‘Forum for the justice of December 19 Mangaluru firing victims’ has demanded that the policemen who are responsible for the death of two innocent men in Mangaluru one-and-a-half months ago should be booked for homicide.

49-year-old Abdul Jaleel Kandak, a father of two, and 23-year-old Nausheen Kudroli, were killed in an arbitrary and unwarranted police firing during a disturbance occurred due to police baton charge in the city on December 2019.

Addressing a press conference, Forum’s convenor Abdul Jaleel Krishnapur said that a judicial inquiry commission should be set up to probe into the police firing which claimed two lives and injured many other innocent civilians.

“Already a murder case should have been filed against the policemen who opened fire on the people.  Instead, false cases have been booked against many innocent people including the victims. This is a blot on the society,” he said.

He urged the government to direct the police department to drop false charges registered against the victims and take necessary action against the culprits in khaki.

He said that the Form demands Rs 25 lakh each compensation for the kin of the two men murdered by the police and Rs 15 lakh compensation for those who injured in police firing on December 19.

Kozhikode, Jun 9: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter Veena T is all set to marry DYFI National President and CPM state committee member PA Muhammad Riyas on June 15. Interestingly, it's the second marriage for both.

Veena, the elder daughter of Pinarayi Vijayan and Kamala Vijayan, is an IT entrepreneur based in Bengaluru.

According to sources, the marriage will be a simple function in Thiruvananthapuram where only close relatives will participate. The marriage registration has already been done.

"It's only a private affair of two individuals," Riyas told media persons, reluctant to divulge more details.

The 44-year-old Muhammad Riyas started his political career with the Students Federation of India (SFI) and climbed up the rungs through DYFI. He had unsuccessfully contested against UDF's M K Raghavan from Kozhikode parliament constituency in 2009.

The son of retired IPS officer P M Abdul Khadar, Riyas is the familiar face of the left in primetime TV discussions, strongly articulating the CPM stance.

A law graduate, he had begun at the grassroots level and gradually worked his way up the ladder.

His marriage to Dr Sameeha Saithalavi, a former syndicate member of Calicut University, happened in 2002. The couple separated in 2015 and they have two sons aged 10 and 13.

The 40-plus Veena is MD of the IT firm Exalogic Solutions since 2014.

Prior to that, she was the CEO of RT Technosoft, a Thiruvananthapuram-based company owned by NRI industrialist Ravi Pillai. Before that, she had a six-year stint with Oracle. She has a son from her first marriage.

"They both were divorced for more than five years. They knew each other and the marriage decision was taken by them only. It's completely a private affair," said a DYFI leader.
