President and 7 directors of Al Falah Minorities Co-op Society killed in accident

Mysuru, Aug 23: A collision between a Tata Sumo and a goods vehicle at Ramadevarahalli Gate near Belluru has claimed the lives of eight persons including two women.

All the deceased are the president and the directors of Al Falah Minorities Credit Co-operative Society.

The deceased have been identified as the society president Akbar Naseem Pasha (40), directors Bakar Sharieff (50), Tahir Sultan Sharieff (30), Naushad Maqbul Pasha (45), Haseen Taj Khaleem (50), Mahboob Dastar Khan (50), Maqsood Mohammed (25) and Shaheda Khanum (40).

Maqsood Mohammed was also the district president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike’s minority wing.

The society, started in 2004, was extending loan facilities to the Muslim traders of the taluk and had an annual turnover of Rs 4 crore. The deceased were the office-bearers of the 3rd batch of the board and the election for the new board was scheduled to be held on December 8.

The directors had attended the board meeting and were on their way to Taj Hotel near Kunigal for dinner when the accident occurred.

Out of 11 directors, one was absent for the meeting. The rest were travelling in the Tata Sumo on Chamarajanagar-Jewargi NH towards Kunigal. Akbar, who was driving the vehicle tried to overtake an autorickshaw, when the tempo coming in the opposite direction rammed into the vehicle, killing four on the spot.

Two injured were shifted to Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital near Bellur Cross, succumbed to injuries. Two others, who were shifted to Columbia Asia hospital in Mysuru, breathed their last on Friday morning.

Bengaluru, June 14: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-led BJP government of Karnataka has once again urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union BJP government to release GST compensation worth Rs 10,208 crore that is due for the state.

The request was placed with Finance Minister Niramala Sitharaman during the 40th GST council meeting, in which Karnataka Home Minister and state’s representative to the council, Basavaraj Bommai, participated.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Bommai said that Rs 10,208 crore was due from the Centre as GST compensation for four four months - from March to May.

“We have requested the Centre to release Rs 1,460 crore - pertaining to GST compensation for the month of March - as soon as possible due to the dire financial conditions of the state,” he said.

Bommai said that the state was confident that the funds will be released soon, noting that Karnataka had recently received Rs 4,314 in GST compensation for three months, between December 2019 to February 2020.

Meanwhile, the state also proposed the Council to reduce penalty for delay in filing GST. Bommai said that while people are made to pay 18% of the tax as fine in delay in payment, Karnataka has asked the Centre to reduce the percentage by half to 9%.

Mangaluru, Feb 18: Customs at International Airport here have seized Rs 58.95 lakh worth gold in two incidents and arrested two smugglers, Customs Commissionerate said on Monday.

According to the department, two men have been arrested by the customs officials in two separate incidents last evening for attempting to smuggle gold into the country valuing over Rs. 58.95 Lakhs.

In the first incident, Muhammed Swalih Chappathodi, 22, hailing from Malappuram, Kerala who arrived from Dubai by Spice jet flight concealed capsules containing gold in paste form inside his rectum which upon purification resulted in the recovery of 797 gm of 24 karats valued at Rs.32,35,820.

Bengaluru, July 29: The Central Crime Branch arrested four international drug peddlers belonging to Kerala and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.25 crore from them, said Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday.

"We have started a war on drugs. Our agenda is to curb the drug mafia not only in Bengaluru, but in entire Karnataka. Many people are involved in the drug mafia. They are targeting students, other states, and international students who can spend and afford to become victims," said Bommai.

The recovered items include 2,000 kg LSD strips, 110 grams MDMA Cristol, 10 ecstasy tablets, 5 kg Ganja, five cell phones, weighing machine and pouches.

"When we raided a house in Soladevanahally police station area, we arrested Shahad Mohammed, Azmal, Ajin KG Verghese and Nitin Mohan. All are from Kerala and we will arrest their contacts as well. They are involved in the dark web mafia," Bommai said.

He said the peddlers were using post offices and couriers for their business.

"I'll speak to the central government, the home ministry and postal department, and other issues related to this mafia. Canada, Netherlands, and other nations are also involved in this mafia," said the state home minister.

"People from influential backgrounds are also involved in this mafia, but our objective is zero tolerance. We are using our intelligence. Drugs are coming from other states like AP, Goa, and other states," he said.
Bommai said he was personally addressing this case and appealed for support from parents, schools and colleges.

"I'm addressing this issue personally because it's important to curb the drug mafia. I need support from schools and college managements and parents. I'll also call college and hostel managements before colleges start. We will make managements responsible," he said.
