Prime suspect in murder cases of four BJP members in Karnataka nabbed

Mysuru/Bengaluru, Apr 26: The Bengaluru Central Crime Branch (CCB) claimed they have arrested the prime accused in the murders and attacks on BJP members in Mysuru in 2009. Ateeq Shareefalias Timber Shareef, 39, was picked up on Thursday. Police said he was on the run for years.

Shareef was wanted for the murders of Shashikumar in 2008, Ramesh Pai and Sathish in 2009 and Raju in 2016, besides being an accused in the attempted murder of Giridhar, who survived the 2009 attack. The police had identified all four victims as members of the BJP.

Police believe Shareef’s arrest will help them zero in on other conspirators and get to the root of the crimes. Shareef, who was arrested by the CCB police, has been remanded to judicial custody.

The murder of Pai on Ashoka Road in Mysuru had remained a mystery for years, while his brother Anand Pai had escaped. Ramesh was grievously assaulted and died on the spot. His murder led to communal tension in parts of Mysuru. Thereafter, the attack on Giridhar in front of his house behind Mysuru Central Prison aggravated the situation.

Two armed bike-borne men had stopped at Giridhar’s house and attacked him. He was shifted to a hospital and initially it was believed that he would not survive, but he recovered. He was in hospital for three months and underwent multiple surgeries.

A host of BJP leaders had staged protests condemning the attack on their workers. Police say the latest murder was that of Raju, who was hacked near a tea shop in Udayagiri in 2016. He was killed with one stroke with a butcher’s knife. This again led to tension in Mysuru. BJP national president Amit Shah visited Raju’s house, further sensationalising the murder.

Police said Shareef was involved in the attacks from 2008 to 2016. He was absconding since August 8, 2016 and took shelter at different places in Karnataka and Maharashtra. A senior police officer confirmed his arrest, but didn’t divulge details of how he was nabbed.

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym. 

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open. 

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health. 

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: Three legislators of the opposition Congress in Karnataka, including 2 MLAs and 1 MLC tested positive for coronavirus and are under treatment, a party official said on Saturday.

"Our Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalgi in Belagavi district and Humnabad MLA Rajashekhar Patil and his MLC brother Chandrashekhar Patil in Bidar district tested positive for the infection and are under treatment at designated hospitals," party spokesman Ravi Gowda told media persons in Bangaluru.

Koujalgi's swab sample was taken on Friday after he showed signs of illness and its result turned positive earlier in the day.

"As Koujalgi attended a review meeting at Bailhongal, about 20 officials who participated in the meeting have been home quarantined," said Gowda.

Koujalgi is the second lawmaker in the state's northwest region to test positive after BJP's Belagavi North assembly segment MLA Anik Benake tested positive for the virus on July 15.

"Patil brothers were in self quarantine after meeting BJP's Bidar Lok Sabha member Bhagwanth Khuba, who tested positive on Wednesday. Their tests also showed they were infected with the virus," Gowda said.

Congress MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, who tested positive on Friday, is under treatment at a private hospital in Mysuru.

Dakshina Kannada district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai is in institutional quarantine in Bengaluru after he tested positive for the infection.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: Congress leader Siddaramaiah targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah soon after he arrived in Bengaluru on Saturday, demanding his answers on various questions pertaining to the state.

In a slew of tweets under the #AnswerMadiShah banner, Siddaramaiah raised issues ranging from the August 2019 floods to the recent police shootout in Mangaluru that killed two people during an anti-CAA protest.

On December 19, Jaleel (45) and Nausheen (24) were killed after the police opened fire during a protest against the CAA.

“Two innocent victims were killed in Mangaluru in what public opinion says that it is a fake encounter. You are the Home Minister of the country. Don't you think adequate investigation has to take place when people cry foul about the incident?” Siddaramaiah asked.

He further asked: “Mr Amit Shah, before investing time to brainwash people to accept your divisive policies, why don't you visit flood-affected areas again and assess if the Central government funds  are sufficient or not?”

The Congress leader pointed out that Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had claimed that Karnataka suffered losses of over Rs 35,000 crore due to the floods. “But your aid is just Rs 1,870 crore. When are you planning to give the remaining? Will there be any funds left after the implementation of CAA, NPR & NRC?” he added.

The former chief minister brought up the Mahadayi river water sharing dispute. It may be recalled that Shah, in the run-up to the Karnataka Assembly elections in 2018, had promised a resolution to the dispute within six months if BJP was voted to power in the state.

“Mr. Amit Shah, your colleagues give contradictory statements on the initiation of Mahadayi project. Why is there a change in stance after elections? What is your stand on the issue,” Siddaramaiah asked.
