Private doctors up the ante; plan Belagavi Chalo on Nov 13

Bengaluru, Nov 6: Continuing agitation against the proposed amendments to the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act, members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have announced that they would take out a ‘Belagavi Chalo’ protest march on November 13, the inaugural day of the special State legislature session there.

They also plan to launch a relay hunger strike in Belagavi on that day. Health Minister K.R. Ramesh Kumar is all set to table the amendment Bill at the session.

At a meeting held here on Sunday, the IMA resolved to meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Mr. Ramesh Kumar and demand that the amendments, which it terms “draconian”, be dropped.

“We have unanimously decided to oppose the amendments in every way possible. The ‘Belagavi Chalo’ [march] will coincide with the first day of the session. The relay hunger strike will go on till our demands are met,” IMA State unit president H.N. Ravindra said.

He said doctors from across the State representing various associations, including the KPME association, would participate.

Meanwhile, activists who condemned the continued opposition to the Bill by private doctors urged MLAs of all parties not to succumb to the private medical establishment lobby and to stand by citizens to uphold the dignity of democratic values in governance.

“We urge all the MLAs to respond to the pain and suffering of patients who bear the brunt of exploitation by private hospitals. We urge MLAs to unanimously approve the amendments to the Act,” said Akhila Vasan of the Karnataka Janarogya Chaluvali.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: The Karnataka government on Sunday directed the Director General of Police Praveen Sood to submit a detailed report on the internal security following the United Nations' observation that international terror outfit IS was active in the state.

The UN report stated that Al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent, which reportedly has between 150 and 200 members from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, was reportedly planning attacks in the region.

It also warned that there were 'significant numbers' of ISIS operatives in Karnataka and Kerala. Reacting to the UN report, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the state government has taken a serious note of the report on the activities of IS in the state.

The state government is in touch with the Centre and the neighbouring states to keep a close watch on the activities of suspicious people and their supporters.

"In this context, it has been decided to strengthen the internal security of the state. The Director General of Police has been asked to submit a detailed report," Bommai said in a release.

The state is also keeping a strict vigil on all those entering Bengaluru from other states, the Minister said. He recalled that the state police had arrested several members of Al-Hind organisation in January last and Jamaat- ul-Mujahideen from Bangladesh in 2018 and 2019. He added that the National Investigation Agency is investigating the case of JMB.

Mangaluru, Jun 12: A pregnant woman who returned from Maharashtra and tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, gave birth to a child at the Wenlock COVID-19 hospital in Mangaluru. After she experienced labour pain, a team of expert doctors performed the delivery through the caesarean section on Thursday.

Both the woman and the new born are safe, hospital sources said. The woman, who belongs to Kinnigoli in Dakshina Kannada district, had arrived in the city on Monday. She was in an advanced stage of pregnancy and was taken to another hospital the next day after she complained of weakness.

As she came from Maharashtra, she was shifted to a separate ward at the Wenlock hospital and quarantined. Her throat swab samples tested positive on Wednesday. A COVID-19 test will be done on the baby after a few days, district health officer Ramachandra Bairy said.

Bengaluru, May 9: The bar owners in Karnataka, while welcoming the state government's decision to allow takeaway sales of liquor, said that the move is not going to benefit them much.

Venkatesh Babu, a Bengaluru-based bar owner said, "We welcome this move, our bar was closed for two months due to coronavirus crisis. We have been facing losses since then."

"The state government has told us to sell our stocks at maximum retail price (MRP). It is difficult for us to manage as the rent is high and we also have to pay salaries," he added.

The owner of Pingara Bar and Restaurant, Shivamogga said, "The government has said that is for parcel only and that too at MRP. There is no benefit to our business. We are only clearing the existing stock. They have given us time till May 17 and are not even giving us fresh stock. We are only allowed to sell what we have already."

Karnataka government in its Friday order allowed restaurants, pubs and bars to sell liquor at retail prices from May 9 till May 17, the day the third phase of lockdown is slated to end.

Earlier, the government had allowed the opening of liquor shops in order to mobilise revenue.

However, bars, pubs, restaurants were ordered to remain closed amid the COVID-19 lockdown.
