Pro-Kannada outfits to call for Karnataka bandh on June 12

Hubballi, Jun 6: Pro-Kannada organisations will call for a state-wide bandh on June 12 to press for an early resolution of the Mahadayi dispute, a permanent solution to the water scarcity in the arid regions of Karnataka, waiver of farm loans and externment of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) functionaries from Belagavi.mahadayi

As part of the bandh, more than one lakh people will take part in a rally from Town Hall to Freedom Park in Bengaluru, Vatal Nagaraj, the president of Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha, told journalists here on Monday. Pro-Kannada organisations will block trains and national highways besides trying to picket Goa which is a party to the Mahadayi dispute. The CPI-backed bus drivers' union has extended support to the bandh, he added.

“It's shameful that two years of peaceful Satyagraha for resolution of the Mahadayi issue has moved neither the Union nor the state government,” he said and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi take personal interest to resolve the issue.

He also urged MPs from all the three parties in the state to raise the issue in Parliament by rising above party politics. Nagaraj also demanded a White Paper from the state government on the development work undertaken by successive regimes in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region since the unification of the state in 1956.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: As the stage is set for the ground-breaking ceremony for Ram temple construction at Ayodhya on Wednesday, retired Supreme Court judge N Santosh Hegde has called for the promotion of religious harmony and peaceful coexistence and respect for different faiths.

"It is a good idea to make that as an object of the temple so that there can be peace in the world," the former Solicitor General of India said when asked if the temple should be promoted as a symbol of national integration, and social and communal harmony.

Hegde said one of the most dangerous things for conflict today is religion. "In that background, there should be some effort from somebody or other to bring about peaceful coexistence, respecting each religion," the former Karnataka Lokayukta told PTI on Tuesday. "It is a good idea to start Bhumi Pujan as an indicator of that or foundation for developing harmony among various religions," he added.

The Supreme Court had in November last year paved the way for the construction of a Ram temple by a Trust at the disputed site of the Babri Masjid's demolition in Ayodhya. It also directed the Centre to allot an alternative 5- acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a new mosque at a "prominent" place in the holy town in Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh government has allotted a five-acre land in Dhannipur village in Sohaval Tehsil of Ayodhya for the mosque's construction.

Bengaluru, May 2: JDS leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy accused the Mandya district administration of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the district and not quarantining 7,000 labourers who arrived here from Mumbai.

"As we know that 16,000 labourers from Mandya were working in Mumbai, out of which 7,000 people have arrived in the district. However, none of them was quarantined properly which is a violation of COVID-19 lockdown," Kumaraswamy told reporters here on Friday.

He claimed the district administration has shown "gross negligence" in their duty in following the procedure of COVID-19 as "one COVID-19 patient's dead body which was brought here from Mumbai has led to more cases in the district and those who accompanied the body have also tested positive for the virus."

Kumaraswamy appealed to the state government to strictly maintain lockdown norms and do not allow any relaxations in view of the rise in COVID-19 cases, stating that "any kind of relaxation could lead to a huge disaster."

Bantwal, Jun 26: A day after expressing gratitude for the overwhelming response from students for the SSLC examinations, Karnataka Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar on Friday took to Twitter to laud a student who didn’t let his physical hurdles deter him from writing the examination.

Sharing image of the student, Kaushik, who wrote the SSLC examination at Bantwal’s SVS High School, the Minister said that he was taken aback by the boy’s spirit for writing the exam independently without relying on anyone’s help. Such individuals give new meaning to life. Others should learn from this.
