Mangaluru, Nov 28: Swami Lakshmi Shankaracharya, founder of the Hindu-Muslim Jan Ekta Manch, today said that the Prophet Muhammad had dedicated his entire life for the establishment of the peace in the world through divine message.

The seer was addressing a symposium on ‘Reforms in society in the light of Prophet Muhammad’s teachings’ organized at Town Hall, here, as part of a month-long campaign being carried out by the Karnataka state unit of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind under the theme ‘Prophet Muhammad, the greatest guide for the mankind’.

Swami, who was once a staunch critic of Islam, said that it was a blunder to associate any religion, especially Islam with terrorism. “There is idealism in Islam and not terrorism,” he said adding that peace and unity was central to all religions but the problem was people did not study their own scriptures properly.

He pointed out that Islam not just prescribes acts of worship like offering namaz, but also mandates its followers to do only good things and establish peace.

“Muhammad was the messenger of global peace. His ultimate aim was to establish peace in the world. The wars in which he participated was also fought for the establishment of the peace,” he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event Swami recalled that he too had associated Islam with terrorism for long due to ignorance. He had even written a book titled ‘The History of Islamic Terrorism’, linking Quranic verses with violence. Things changed when he was assigned to write a book, ‘America in Danger Because of Islam’. He read a book on the Prophet brought out by the JIH and realized that he had read earlier read the Quranic verses out of context.

JIH national Moulana Muhammad Iqbal Mulla inaugurated the programme. Dr CP Habeeb Rehman, chairman of Unity Health Complex presided over. Novelist K Veerabhadrappa, journalist B M Haneef, and Mangalore University’s Prof B Shivaram Shetty among others spoke on the occasion.

Mangaluru, Mar 10: Tension prevailed in the city after an international flyer quarantined at the District Wenlock Hospital walked out of the facility.

The passenger, with a recent travel history to high-risk countries, refused to cooperate with health officials. The day-long drama ended when the district administration intervened and the flyer agreed to get himself re-admitted.

Deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said the passenger had fever and was sent to an isolation ward. “The passenger is cooperating with the treatment and samples have been collected for testing,” she said. The samples will be sent to a testing centre in Bengaluru.

Sources told  that rude behaviour by staff at Mangalore International Airport may have angered the passenger and he walked out of the quarantine facility.

She said if passengers show reluctance to be screened, they should first be counselled and allowed to get themselves admitted to a hospital of their choice with quarantine facility. If they still refuse to cooperate, they will have to be hospitalised forcefully, she added.

Jan 18: Days after the arrest of Deputy SP Davinder Singh along with two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, Shiv Sena on Saturday questioned the role of police in the Kashmir Valley.

"Cross border infiltration is ongoing in Kashmir. But the police machinery is being used to help the terrorists in Kashmir to safely cross the border (to Pakistan) and a President's medal awarded Deputy SP was arrested for doing so. In Kashmir (it seems), the government is using the police for some other purposes, what will the country's Home Ministry say if somebody has a doubt in connection with the Pulwama attacks," Sena mouthpiece, Saamna, read.

This was in reference to the incident in which Jammu and Kashmir police intercepted a vehicle on Sunday and arrested DySP Davinder Singh along with two top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, who were travelling together.

The Sena mouthpiece asserted that the impact and acceptance of the Centre removing Article 370 should be visible "through the people" during the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.

"Jammu and Kashmir is now a Union Territory. It is being ruled by the Centre through President's Rule. The government had removed Article 370 in a historic decision...The joy and excitement in the people over the removal of 370 should be visible in the Republic Day celebrations this time. The tricolour should be seen flying over all houses in Kashmir, it is the least that can be expected," it added.

The Sena mouthpiece further said that with the arrest of terrorists in the recent days, it hoped that "Republic Day will be celebrated safely in Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir".
