Protest in Udupi over fishermen missing for 3 weeks

Udupi, Jan 6: Thousands of fishermen took out a protest march in the Udupi district of Karnataka on Sunday. The protestors demanded the government to trace the seven members of their community who have been missing for 24 days.

The seven fishermen went missing in December from near the Malpe port in Udupi district.

The incident came to light when a Twitter handle @malpesharath1 informed Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Twitter that a fishing boat named Suvarna Tribhuja, with a group of fishermen, had not been found since December 13, raising fear that it could be a handiwork of terrorists wanting to carry out Mumbai 26/11 type of attack.

After the matter was brought to her notice, Sitharaman directed the Coast Guard and Navy to check and respond to the call for help from the families of the fishermen.

"Sorry to know, @indiancoastguard @indiannavy please check and respond," Sitharaman tweeted.

The Indian Coast Guard, on December 25, pressed its ships, aircraft and helicopters into service to locate the vessel and the missing people. An additional interception craft was also pressed into action as a part of the search operation.

As per reports, kin of the fishermen expressed fear that their family members may have been kidnapped by terrorists and urged the government to move fast in locating the boat as it could hamper national security.

Mangaluru, Jan 23: Bajpe Police on Thursday registered yet another case against the prime accused in Mangaluru International Airport case, Aditya Rao.

According to the police, a complaint was received from the officials of Indigo flight that they had to delay their flight scheduled to take off for Hyderabad at 1615 hrs after receiving a hoax call from Aditya, threatening of bomb.

They also asserted that the passengers were de-boarded from the flight and the luggages were brought back to security check again.

Mangaluru, July 31: Coronavirus related deaths in Dakshina Kannada continued to surge, with the district administration recording five more fatalities in a day, thus taking the tally to 155.

The district has recorded multiple deaths every day from July 1 to 31. A majority of the deaths are due to comorbid conditions.

Among the five deaths reported today, a 47-year-old man from Mangaluru, was admitted to private hospital on July 30, and breathed his last on the same day. He was suffering from ARDS, Type 1 respiratory failure, COPD, Type II DM, HTN and died due to cardiac arrest.

Another patient was a 75-year-old man from Bantwal, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 23, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from acute coronary syndrome, pneumonia (ARDS), metabolic encephalopathy, acute kidney injury, systemic hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The third patient was a 63-year-old man from Mangaluru, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 18, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from ARDS, septic shock, renal failure, and secondary bacterial infection.

The fourth patient was an 88-year-old woman from Davanagere, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 9, and passed away on July 30. She was suffering from septic shock, and secondary bacterial infection.

The fifth patient was a 75-year-old man from Mangaluru. He was admitted to Wenlock hospital on July 15, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from refractory ARDS, septic shock, renal failure, acute coronary event, arrhythmias, pulmonary thromboembolism, and hemoperitoneum.

The district administration said that though the above patients contracted coronavirus, the exact cause of their deaths is being investigated by a team of experts and their report is awaited.

On the other hand, Dakshina Kannada district recorded a total of 204 fresh cases, taking the tally to 5,713. Among the 204 new cases are 75 primary contacts, 63 with influenza-like illness (ILI), and 14 with severe acute respiratory illness (SARI). As many as 52 cases are under investigation. As many as 70 patients were discharged on Friday from Wenlock as well as private hospitals.

As per the district health bulletin, a total of 40,706 samples have been tested so far and 34,993 out of them have tested negative. Among the 5,713 positive cases reported in the district, only 2,929 are currently active. As many as 2,631 persons have recovered and been discharged.

Bengaluru, Mar 21: Three new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Karnataka, taking the total number of infections to 18, the state government said on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Health Minister B Sriramulu giving details about one positive case said, a 32-year old person from Gauribidanur in Chikkaballapura district, who has returned from Mecca has been confirmed for coronavirus infection.

The person has been admitted in a designated isolated hospital for treatment, he said in a tweet.

Details regarding the other two patients are still awaited.

The mid-day situation update by the government also said a circular has been issued to Health and Family Welfare Department officials and staff at all levels to work even on Sundays and general holidays without fail till March 31 in view of COVID-19.

A total of 48 government hospitals and 35 private hospitals have been identified as first respondent hospitals for the case management of COVID-19 cases, it said.

Mental health counselling is being done for positive COVID-19 cases and suspects in the identified hospitals and quarantined persons at home and hospital.

A total of 4,390 counselling sessions have been held till date, it added.

Sriramulu in a tweet, also said the government as a precautionary measure is planning to install thermal test CC cameras at government offices and certain important places.
