Protests erupt in Karnataka against communal CAB; Section 144 imposed in Kalaburagi

Kalaburagi, Dec 13: Prohibitory orders under CrPC section 144 were imposed in the city excluding the locations of Friday prayers and premises of deputy commissioner's (DC) office till 6 pm on Friday.

This prohibition is imposed in order to ensure the maintenance of law and order in the city a day after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 became an Act after Presidential assent on Thursday.

Under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) assembly of four or more people in an area is prohibited.

The contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, , 2019 became an Act after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to it on Thursday. Earlier, the Bill easily sailed through Rajya Sabha on Wednesday and in Lok Sabha prior to that on Monday.

After the Bill was passed by Rajya Sabha, vehement protest erupted in Assam and other parts of the northeast. Following which the Army columns were deployed to contain unrest and curfew was imposed.

The Act will grant Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Zoroastrian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Bengaluru, Mar 27: Karnataka has recorded the third death due to the Covid-19 virus. It is a man from Tumakuru with a travel history to Delhi. He had been put in isolation at the District Hospital in Tumakuru on March 24.

His travel history indicates that he travelled to New Delhi by the Sampark Kranti Express (Coach S6) on March 5 along with 13 members. They reached Hazrat Nizamuddin station in New Delhi on March 7 and went to the Jamia Masjid and rented an room at a lodge nearby.

He began the return journey to Karnataka by the Kongu Express on March 11 in Coach no. S9. On March 18, he developed cough and fever and visited a private hospital the next day. He was referred to the District Hospital in Tumakuru but on March 24, he left the hospital against medical advice and went to a private medical facility. He was referred back to the District Hospital, where he was put isolation.

Bengaluru, Jul 17: A total of 3,693 new COVID-19 positive cases and 115 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Friday, said the state health department.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the state is presently at 55,115, including 33,205 active cases. While there are 20,757 recoveries, the death toll stands at 1,147.

With the highest single-day spike of 34,956 cases and 687 deaths, India's COVID-19 positive cases crossed the 10 lakh mark on Friday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total positive cases stand at 10,03,832 including 3,42,473 active cases, 6,35,757 cured/discharged/migrated and 25,602 deaths, according to the ministry.

Mangaluru, Jan 13: Supporting former state chief minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy who released a "CD on the December 19 Mangaluru violence", Dakshina Kannada party unit president Mohammed Kunhi on Monday demanded a probe into the violence.

Mr Kumaraswamy, who released 35 video clips related to the violence, had demanded the suspension of the Police Commissioner and also sought a house committee to probe the incident.

Addressing media personnel here, Kunhi questioned, "If the police department did not commit any mistake why is the state government looking worried about the CDs released by Kumaraswamy?"
