Protests in Pakistan over Modi's remarks, Rohingyas' genocide

Islamabad, Jun 13: Protests were held across Pakistan's Sindh province to voice anger over what people described as "Indian war hysteria and inhuman brutalities being meted out to the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar".

Activists of almost all religious parties and a number of political parties took out rallies and staged demonstrations across Sindh on Friday, Dawn online reported.

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and Pakistan Sunni Tehreek (PST) protesters burnt Indian flags and effigies of the Indian prime minister at the end of their rallies.

Sindh PML-Q president Haleem Adil Shaikh, while addressing workers outside the Press Club in Hyderabad city, said that all Pakistanis were united for the security and integrity of their homeland.

If India committed the mistake of resorting to aggression, the entire nation would back its army, he said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a June 7 address at Dhaka University, blamed Pakistan for spreading terrorism and fear in India, saying: "Every now and then Pakistan keeps disturbing India, creates nuisance, promotes terrorism and such incidents keep recurring."

The participants in Friday's rallies marched on different roads before converging at the press club where their leaders said the Indian premier's statements had deeply hurt Pakistanis.

They said that Pakistan was a powerful country and its army knew how to guard the boundaries of its homeland.

Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) leader Maulana Qari Mehmood urged the government to eliminate India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agents from the country and appealed to Muslim countries to stand united on one platform against Myanmar's brutalities against Muslims.

The protesters condemned the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims, and above all, the criminal silence of international organisations of human rights, the UN as well as European countries over the massacre of Muslims.

They also demanded that Pakistan should send back the Myanmar ambassador whose country was involved in systematic ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslims and rape of their women.

Similar protests were held in Ghotki and Kandhkot districts.

Islamabad, Jun 25: The coronavirus cases in Pakistan crossed the 192,000-mark after 4,044 new Covid-19 infections were detected in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said on Thursday.

According to the Ministry of National Health Services, 148 more people died due to the deadly virus in the country, taking the death toll to 3,903.

With the detection of 4,044 new cases in the last 24 hours, the coronavirus tally in the country now stands at 192,970, it said.

Sindh reported a maximum number of 74,070 infections, followed by 71,191 in Punjab, 23,887 in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 11,710 in Islamabad, 9,817 in Balochistan, 1,365 in Gilgit-Baltistan and 930 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

A total of 81,307 patients have recovered so far from the disease.

Health authorities have so far conducted 1,171,976 coronavirus tests, including 21,835 in the last 24 hours.

Washington, Aug 7: US President Donald Trump on Thursday (local time) signed executive orders halting all transactions with Chinese applications TikTok and WeChat within 45 days, citing national security concerns, further escalating the tensions between Beijing and Washington.

"WeChat, a messaging, social media, and electronic payment application owned by the Chinese company Tencent Holdings Ltd., reportedly has over one billion users worldwide, including users in the United States. Like TikTok, WeChat automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users. 

This data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) access to Americans' personal and proprietary information," Trump said in a statement.

Citing reasons for the ban on WeChat, the US President said that the application captures the personal and proprietary information of Chinese nationals visiting the US, thereby providing the CCP a mechanism to keep tabs on the Chinese citizens who may be "enjoying the benefits of a free society for the first time in their lives".

"In March 2019, a researcher reportedly discovered a Chinese database containing billions of WeChat messages sent from users in not only China but also the United States, Taiwan, South Korea and Australia. WeChat, like TikTok, also reportedly censors content that the CCP deems politically sensitive and may also be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the CCP. 

These risks have led other countries, including Australia and India, to begin restricting or banning the use of WeChat. The US must take aggressive action against the owner of WeChat to protect our national security," he added.

Earlier, Trump had issued an order banning TikTok as it "reportedly censors content that the CCP deems politically sensitive, such as content concerning protests in Hong Kong and China's treatment of Uighurs and other Muslim minorities. 

TikTok may also be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the CCP."
US politicians have repeatedly criticised TikTok, owned by Beijing-based startup ByteDance, of being a threat to national security because of its ties to China.

The development comes as China and the US are at loggerheads on a variety of issues including Hong Kong national security law, the South China Sea, the novel coronavirus and trade.

Minneapolis, Jul 23: The former Minneapolis police officer charged with murder in the death of George Floyd was charged Wednesday with multiple felony counts of tax evasion.

Derek Chauvin and his wife, Kellie May Chauvin, were each charged in Washington County with six counts of filing false or fraudulent tax returns for the tax years 2014 through 2019 and three counts of failing to file tax returns for 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Floyd, a Black man who was handcuffed, died May 25 after Chauvin, who is white, pressed his knee against Floyd's neck for nearly eight minutes as Floyd pleaded for air.

Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. He and three other officers who were at the scene were fired.

Chauvin is in custody on the charges in the Floyd case. Kellie Chauvin, who filed for divorce after Floyd's death, is not in custody.

Online court records didn't list attorneys for either in the tax evasion case, and calls to Kellie Chauvin did not go through.

Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said the investigation into the Chauvins was started in June by the Minnesota Department of Revenue and Oakdale Police Department.

Authorities allege in the criminal complaints that the Chauvins failed to file income tax returns and pay state income taxes, and that they underreported and underpaid taxes on income they earned from various jobs each year.

The complaints allege that they also failed to pay proper sales tax on a $100,000 BMW purchased in Minnesota in 2018.

Prosecutors say the Chauvins bought the car in Minnetonka but registered it in Florida, where they paid lower sales taxes.
