PU college principal ends life; kin allege harassment by upper caste men

Mangaluru, Jan 22: A principal of a pre university college in Kodagu district allegedly committed suicide inside a lodge in Mangalur on Thursday.

The incident came to light on Thursday evening when the staff of the lodge located in Bijai area forced open the door of the room booked by the 45-year-old Sudesh.

Sudesh, a Dalit, hailing from Talapady in Mangaluru taluk had been working as the principal at Srimathi D Chennamma PU College at Madapura, Somwarpet.

His family members have alleged that harassment by the upper caste men in college management led him to resort to the extreme step.

It is learnt that he had booked the room on Wednesday night. He was supposed to leave the room on Thursday.

When he did not come out of the room till Thursday evening, the staff grew suspicious and peeped into the room only to witness Sudesh lying in an unconscious state.

After the door was broke open, it came to light that he had consumed poison. The police from Urwa station rushed to the spot and shifted the body for post-mortem after a doctor confirmed that he was dead.

Sudesh is survived by his wife, who works as a lecturer at a private institution in Krishnapura, a son and a daughter.

Bagalkot, April 7: A group of villagers on Monday attacked three Muslim men at Bidari village in Bagalkot district accusing them of being responsible for the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The three men belonging to Mahalingapura village were walking on the road when they were attacked with sticks by people even when they said that they were nowhere connected to Tablighi Jamaat.

This incident happened within the limits of Mudhol Police Station.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Lokesh Jagasalar said that the police is investigating the matter and no one will be spared who all are involved in this act.

"No one will be spared and we have taken the incident seriously and finding whoever harassed three Muslim men, at no cost the incident be defended by anyone, it was unexpected and case will be booked and stringent action will be taken against those who are involved in the incident," Lokesh told news agency.

Tirumala, Jul 16: As many as 14 priests of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) were tested positive for COVID-19 in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, said Anil Kumar Singhal, Executive officer, TTD.

Singhal also held a meeting with temple priests, health and vigilance officials today.

On July 14, Singhal held 'Dial your EO' programme at TTD administrative building conference hall wherein the EO addressed the devotees and media and informed that 91 TTD employees have tested positive for COVID-19 till date.

According to the Union Health Ministry, the state has reported 35,451 COVID-19 cases including, 16,621 active cases, 18,378 recovered and 452 deaths so far.

Mangaluru, July 15: Moulana Iqbal Mulla Nadvi, an acclaimed Islamic scholar and Qadhi (Khazi) of Bhatkal, passed away at a private hospital in Mangaluru. 

The elderly scholar was critically for past few weeks. 

He had served as the president of Jamia Islamia Bhatkal for several years.

He was known among Islamic scholars of Karnataka for his boldness, sincerity and wisdom.

Last rites are expected to be held in Bhatkal.
