Bengaluru, Apr 12: A pre-university student from Yadgir has been arrested by the Central Crime Branch officials on charge of circulating the 2017 PU Kannada question paper on WhatsApp and other social media platforms claiming that it was this year’s paper.
The images were “leaked” a few days before the exam on March 16, causing much consternation among Education Department officials.
Based on a complaint by officials, the cybercrime police questioned 30 people who received the images on their mobile phone and social media accounts before zeroing in on the accused, Manjunath, on Wednesday.
The police also arrested his friend, a PU student, who allegedly helped Manjunath alter the question paper to make it look like this year’s paper.
Manjunath allegedly confessed that he wanted to create panic among students and decided to play a prank ahead of the exam.
“He downloaded the 2017 Kannada question paper, copied the barcode of an economics paper and affixed it on the Kannada paper to make it look authentic,” said the police. He and a minor allegedly circulated it amongst their friends on WhatsApp.
Manjunath has been charged with various section of IT Act. He has been remanded in judicial custody. The minor has been handed over to the State home for boys.
