Pune: IT engineer beaten to death over parking space dispute

Pune, Jan 22: An IT engineer on Saturday died after he was allegedly beaten with an iron rod and stones over a parking space dispute here.

39-year-old Neville Battiwala was beaten by three men. He had objected to parking of vehicles in front of his bungalow located in Kondhwa.

Battiwala was partying on his rooftop when an argument broke out with the drivers of a tourist company which escalated into a fight.

Following this, the 39-year-old was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

On Thursday, the three accused - Sriganesh Raskar (31), Yogesh Kadwe (22) and Vikram Bhombe (31) were arrested.

A senior police officer of Kondhwa police station said that Raskar runs a transport business, and his driver used to park the vehicles in front of the gate of Battiwala's bungalow.

"Battiwala often objected to it. On Friday night, the deceased had another argument with Raskar over the issue that led to the scuffle," said the officer.

Raskar and the other two attacked Battiwala with rods and left him injured. "Battiwala was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to injuries," he said.

Neville had relocated to Pune two years back and was working with a software firm.

Nagpur, Apr 5: A 23-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Imambada area in Nagpur on Saturday due to financial distress, police said.

Nikhil Gavhane, who worked in a grocery shop, hanged himself as he had taken money from a person and was stressed over repayment, an official said.

"He was depressed since a week," the Imambada police station official said.

Mumbai, Jan 12: At least eight persons were killed and several others injured when a massive blast followed by a fire ripped a chemical factory at Boisar in Palghar district, nearly 100 km north of Mumbai, on Saturday, officials said.

Top Palghar district administration, police and fire brigade officials have rushed to the spot for the rescue operation, while Fire Brigade teams from Boisar MIDC industrial area and Tarapur Atomic Power Station are engaged in dousing the flames.

As per local witnesses, the intensity of the explosion was so severe that it was audible in a 35-km range and one building in the factory collapsed.

Besides, many homes in the immediate vicinity were shaken and people ran outside thinking it was an earthquake, as power lines also failed.

The exact cause of the explosion-cum-blaze which occurred around 7 p.m. is not immediately available.

Bengaluru, Feb 5: City Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru City have arrested two drug peddlers from Kerala and have seized banned products from their possession.

According to officials the arrested persons have been identified as Shinto Thomas (35) of Wayanad and Tajudden Talat (29) of Thiruvananthapuram.

"We have seized 4 kg 350 grams of Hashish oil, 21.5 kgs of Ganja, Rs. 9300 cash, two mobile phones, two ganja crushing tools, and 625 empty boxes and other articles from them", police said in a statement.
