Puttur: 3 children drown in water tank while playing; residents stage protest

Puttur, Apr 4: In a tragic incident, three children, who reportedly got into a drinking water tank near their residence to play, drowned in Uddangala in Bettampady village, Puttur taluk, on Wednesday.

The police gave the names of the victims as Jitesh, 13, and his cousins Vismita, 13, and Chaitra, 9. All were students of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School, Mittadka.

The police said the children returned from school in the evening and went to play near the public drinking water storage tank that was constructed three months ago. When the children did not return home, their concerned parents and residents launched a search only to find the bodies in the tank.

Angry residents carried out a flash protest against what they called negligence of the panchayat personnel in keeping the tank lid open.

Superintendent of Police B.M. Laxmi Prasad, Assistant Commissioner Krishnamurthy and panchayat president Baby Jayaram Poojary visited the spot and consoled the family members and residents.

Jitesh was the son of Ravi Moolya and was studying in class 7. Vismita, also a class 7 student, and Chaitra, a class 4 student, were the daughters of Ravi Moolya’s brother Harish Moolya, the police said.

The Puttur Rural Police have registered a case.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: Karnataka Chief Secretary TM Vijay Bhaskar on Friday announced to sanction 160 acres of land at Kenjar in the Taluk for setting up the Indian Coast Guard Academy.

The land was allotted from the land bank of Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

Mr Bhaskar made the announcement at the commissioning of the high-speed interceptor boat C-448 of the Indian Coast Guard at New Mangalore recently.

Mysuru, Mar 6: A woman was murdered by her husband in front of her father in the wee hours of Friday at her home in Hosakamanakoppal, Yelwal hobli here, police said on Friday.

The police said the deceased is Mamatha, a native of Periyapatna who was married to Nagesh of Hosakamanakoppal about seven years ago. The couple has a six-year-old son. Mamatha was Nagesh’s second wife as his first wife had allegedly committed suicide.

It is said that Nagesh was addicted to liquor and gambling and used to fight with Mamatha over petty reasons. 

Yesterday night too, there was a fight between the couple and Mamatha’s father pacified both of them and all of them went to sleep later.

Udupi, Aug 1: A girl child died five persons suffered injuries in a car accident today on National Highway-66 near Ambalpady in Udupi.

According to sources, two couples and children were travelling in the car from Mangaluru to Shikaripura when the tragedy took place. 

The speeding car rammed into the road divider and flipped over after the driver lost control over it near Ambalpady. 

Among the injured, the condition of a woman is said to be critical. She has been admitted to KMC Hospital in Manipal. The other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

A case has been registered at Udupi town traffic police station and investigations are on. More details are awaited.
