Mangaluru, Dec 23: In a gut-wrenching tragedy, a mother and daughter died on the spot after a speeding bus belonging to Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation knocked down their two-wheeler at a remote area in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday.

The victims have been identified as Kamala (41), who was riding the scooter and her daughter Shrijanya (11), who was riding pillion.
A native of Tamil Nadu, Kamala had been working in a rubber plantation at Veeramangala in Shantigodu village of Puttur taluk for past one year. Her daughters Shrijanya and Saujanya go to school in Manglauru and stay in a hostel.
Kamala had fetched both the girls home on Saturday morning as they had a weeklong Christmas holidays.
In the evening when Kamala was returning home after visiting Puttur town along with her younger daughter, a bus hit their scooter from behind near the railway over-bridge at Bedrala in Kemminje village.
The intensity of the collision was such that both the rider and pillion rider were thrown onto the road and within a second their heads were crushed under the wheels of the same bus.
A case has been registered at Puttur traffic police station and investigations are on.
