Mangaluru, Sept 8: The Dakshina Kannada police have detained a reporter of a Kannada daily after registering a suo motu case against him on charge of creating tension through spreading “false information”.
The arrested has been identified as Imthiaz Thumbay, Bantwal taluk reporter of Vartha Bharati Kannada daily. The police are now questioning the reporter.
Superintendent of Police C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that the reporter was booked under Section 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and Section 505 (2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) of the IPC.
The case pertains to photos and report on alleged desecration of Quran and other religious books during a raid on the house of one Kalandar, an absconding accused in a murder case in Bantwal taluk recently.
Footage of the holy book purportedly being thrown aside during the raid went viral on social media. Vartha Bharati and many local newspapers had carried the report based on the allegations made by the family members of Kalandar.
Reddy had later clarified that the police had not done this as they respect holy books of all religions. He also asked those making allegations to watch the video recorded in the presence of Panchas available with the police. According to police the desecration was caused by the miscreants after the departure of police.
