Raghubar Das elected first non-tribal CM of Jharkhand

December 26, 2014

Ranchi, Dec 26: Five-time MLA and BJP national vice-president Raghubar Das was elected Jharkhand's first non-tribal chief minister Friday, three days after his party's victory in the assembly elections.

Raghubar DasKhunti legislator Neelkanth Singh Munda proposed Das' name at a meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) newly elected MLAs that was convened to choose the leader of the legislative party. The proposal was seconded by Jamshedpur West legislator Saryu Rai, Ranchi MLA CP Singh and others.

BJP central observer JP Nadda made the official announcement in this regard in the party's Ranchi office.

He said Das was unanimously elected as the BJP legislature party leader. “I congratulate him and expect that the BJP alliance will now provide good governance in the state. He will fulfill the Prime Minister's mantra of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas (With all, development for all)."

The poll results on Tuesday gave the BJP and its ally AJSU Party 42 seats, an absolute majority in the House of 81 elected members.

This is the first time a pre-poll coalition has reached the majority mark in the tribal-dominated state which has witnessed nine governments and three stints of President's rule since its inception in 2000.

Das said that government’s first priority would be to provide good and corruption-free governance. “Our government will work for the upliftment of downtrodden and wholesome development of the state.” Das said, adding he would meet the aspirations of the people.

Das will now meet the governor of Jharkhand to stake claim to the new government. He is likely to take oath by Sunday, well ahead of the expiry of the outgoing government's term on January 3, 2015.

Former chief minster Arjun Munda was also present at Friday's meeting as a special invitee.

Das' anointment was almost certain after powerful tribal leader Munda pulled out of the race for chief minister.

Munda, a former chief minister, was a surprise loser in the polls, conceding defeat from his stronghold Kharswan.

The only hurdle in Das' path was Munda himself, given their thorny relationship over the years, a source said.

Aware of the fact that Munda could spoil his party, Das had called on the former chief minister thrice after the results were announced.

Sources said that the leadership may try to placate Munda by offering him a post in the central organisation or giving him a Rajya Sabha berth.

Hemant Soren, who led the 15-month-old UPA government, resigned as chief minister on Tuesday after his party - the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) - ended well short of the target with just 17 seats.

New Delhi, Feb 16: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal was on Sunday sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in a row at Ramlila Maidan here, after his party registered a massive victory in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly polls.

Kejriwal was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal.

The sprawling Ramlila Maidan reverberated with sounds of thousands of people cheering for the AAP leader.

Kejriwal who received a hero's welcome here had extended an invitation to the people of Delhi urging them to attend the swearing-in ceremony to witness "the son of Delhi" taking oath today.

The AAP nearly repeated its 2015 performance in the elections, sweeping the Assembly polls winning 62 seats in the 70-member Assembly, in the face of a high-voltage campaign by the BJP, which fielded a battery of Union Ministers and Chief Ministers in its electioneering spearheaded by Home Minister Amit Shah.

New Delhi, Feb 28: The Congress on Friday reacted sharply to the petition in the court seeking registration of a First Information Report against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for alleged hate speeches. It said the petition was to save BJP leaders Pravesh Verma, Anurag Thakur and Kapil Mishra, referring to the trio as "PAK".

Congress leader Jaiveer Shergil told news agency, "It is political interest litigation to hide the failure of the government and to put a lid on the BJP's involvement in fuelling the fire in Delhi riots.

"This is to hide and save BJP's PAK -- Pravesh, Anurag and Kapil," said Shergil.

The BJP has two parameters, the laws for the common man and citizens of the country are different from those for the BJP leaders, added Mr Shergil.

The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notices on a petition for the registration of an FIR against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and others on charges of delivering hate speeches.

Congress said that the PIL was politically motivated and the inaction on the hate speeches made by the BJP leaders, which led to the riots, was shocking.

"When there are 48 cases registered, why three cases against the BJP leaders are not registered," asked Mr Shergil.

A Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel sought responses from the Central and Delhi governments apart from Delhi Police on a petition filed by Lawyers Voice. The matter will again be heard on April 13.

The petition also sought a case against Aam Aadmi Party leaders Manish Sisodia and Amanatullah Khan, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leaders Akbaruddin Owaisi and Waris Pathan, and lawyer Mehmood Paracha.

"Issue directions to constitute an SIT to look into these hate speeches and take appropriate action. Issue direction to register an FIR against those named in the petition," the petition said.

New Delhi, Jun 2: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Moody's Investors Service downgrading India's sovereign rating to the lowest investment rate and said that the global rating agency has rated his handling of the country's economy "a step above junk".

"Moody's has rated Modi's handling of India's economy a step above JUNK. Lack of support to the poor and the MSME sector means the worst is yet to come," the Congress leader tweeted citing a media report on Moody's downgrading the nation.

On Monday, Moody's downgraded the country's rating to "Baa3" from "Baa2". This comes at a time when the government is facing criticism from the Opposition over its handling of the COVID-19 situation and measures to boost the economy.

The government has already announced a stimulus package of Rs 20 lakh crore to deal with the situation.
