Bengaluru, Oct 19: Karnataka Congress leader G Parameshwara today said Rahul Gandhi has advised state party leaders against making personal comments on opposition BJP leaders and instead engage them on national and local issues in run up to the next year's assembly elections.

KPCC leaders including Parameshwara, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka party incharge and AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal had met Gandhi in New Delhi on October 12 to discuss the poll strategy.

Veteran Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Oscar Fernandes and B K Hariprasad also attended the meeting.

Parameshwara said the AICC vice president advised them not to make personal comments against BJP leaders but corner them on national and local issues.

Parameshwara also said Gandhi has asked KPCC leaders including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and him to avoid making conflicting statements in the media especially on the issue of selection of party candidates for the election.

"We told Rahulji that we do not have any differences, which is evident in our discussions with him everytime we met. Maybe, it is a creation of the opposition or somebody," he said here.

Media reports have suggested differences between Siddaramaiah and Parameshwara on selection of candidates.

The senior Congress leader also said that Gandhi discussed the political scenario in Karnataka and delineated the poll strategy to retain power.

The Congress vice president also stressed the need for raising awareness about the state government's achievements among public, Parameshwara said.

"Rahulji has also advised us to meet people and inform them about the government's efforts in implementing welfare schemes and seek their blessings so as to do more for them," he said.

Asked about the chances of Congress winning the 2018 election, Parameshwara sounded optimistic and claimed the Siddaramaiah government has given a clean and corruption-free governance.

"The BJP is merely levelling corruption charges against us but not proving them. In the case of Yeddyurappa and a few BJP ministers, they went to jail after we proved the charges with documentary evidence."

The Lokayukta court had on October 15, 2011 remanded Karnataka BJP unit chief BS Yeddyurappa in judicial custody in cases relating to alleged irregularities in denotification of government land, and sent him to Parappana Agrahara Central jail here.

Yeddyurappa, under whom the BJP formed its first-ever government in the south in 2008 elections, had to relinquish the chief minister's post following his indictment in the Lokayukta report on illegal mining submitted on July, 2011 by then anti-corruption ombudsman Santosh Hegde.

Parameshwara claimed, "I feel, we provided good governance as we have more money in the budget and are able to spend it on agriculture, education and health."

Bengaluru, May 2: JDS leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy accused the Mandya district administration of the surge in COVID-19 cases in the district and not quarantining 7,000 labourers who arrived here from Mumbai.

"As we know that 16,000 labourers from Mandya were working in Mumbai, out of which 7,000 people have arrived in the district. However, none of them was quarantined properly which is a violation of COVID-19 lockdown," Kumaraswamy told reporters here on Friday.

He claimed the district administration has shown "gross negligence" in their duty in following the procedure of COVID-19 as "one COVID-19 patient's dead body which was brought here from Mumbai has led to more cases in the district and those who accompanied the body have also tested positive for the virus."

Kumaraswamy appealed to the state government to strictly maintain lockdown norms and do not allow any relaxations in view of the rise in COVID-19 cases, stating that "any kind of relaxation could lead to a huge disaster."

New Delhi, Jan 30: A terrorist opened fire at people peacefully protesting against the contentious citizenship amendment act (CAA) near the Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi this afternoon, causing chaos and panic in the area.

One person has been injured. In a video, the terrorist, wearing a black jacket and a pair of white trousers, can be seen walking on a road, waving a gun as he shouts "who wants Azadi, come I'll shoot you. Then he says, "Yeh lo aazadi (here's your freedom)" and opens fire injuring a student in front of police.

A video of the attack that is being shared widely on social media also showed the assailant also shouting the 'Jai Shri Ram' slogan and warning protesters to chant 'Vande Mataram' if they want to stay in India. The injured student, Shadab, was hit by the bullet in his arm and has been admitted to the Holy Family hospital in Jamia Nagar.

His condition is stated to be stable. The incident took place near the hospital when a protest march was being taken out by students. Students said that the attacker tried to hijack the peaceful protest and threatened the anti-CAA agitators.

The shooting comes in the aftermath of communally charged, hateful and violence provoking rhetoric by several BJP leaders in the run-up to the assembly elections in Delhi.

Junior finance minister Anurag Thakur had on Monday led chants of ‘shoot the traitors’ at a poll rally in north Delhi’s Rithala. The minister prompted "desh ke gaddaron ko..." to which the crowd responded "...goli maaro sa***n ko". The chant translates to "shoot down the traitors who betray the country". Protesters against the CAA and the NRC have often been dubbed anti-national by members of the ruling BJP.

After Thakur’s hate speech, a man carrying a gun was also caught at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh, the venue of mega protests. The man had walked into the protest ground and allegedly brandished the weapon till he was overpowered by the surrounding protesters, eyewitnesses said.
