Rahul attacks Modi on land bill, says 56-inch chest will be reduced to 5.6

July 17, 2015

Jaipur, Jul 17: Sharpening his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the land bill, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today said farmers will reduce his "56-inch chest" to "5.6 inches" in six months and not an inch of land will be ceded.

rahul-gandhiHe also took on the Vasundhara Raje government over her links with Lalit Modi, charging the Rajasthan government was being run by the ex-IPL boss' remote in London.

The Congress Vice President's remarks come at a time when the government is planning to bring the contentious land bill in the Monsoon session of Parliament beginning next week.

Addressing party workers here, Rahul vowed not to allow passage of the Land bill in Parliament even though Modi government has thrice issued ordinances to this effect.

"First time such a government has come which is helping the opposition. Whenever they get an opportunity, government is helping the Congress. On farmers' issue, they have issued an ordinance thrice. We will not allow the land bill to be passed in Parliament, you will see. Not a single inch of land will be given.

"This 56-inch chest will turn into 5.6 inches in six months. And who will turn this into 5.6 inches, it is the Congress party, people of the country, the farmers and the labourers, you will see," Rahul said, taking a jibe at the Prime Minister's remark of "56-inch chest" made at the time of the Lok Sabha campaign.

The Congress Vice President also compared the Raje government with the British government in the pre-Independence era when the "remote" of the government was in London.

"The way that government's remote was in London, the same way the remote control of this government is in London. He presses the button there and here she (Vasundhara Raje) jumps," he alleged.

Accusing the Chief Minister of helping a "fugitive" who had amassed black money, he said, "She broke the Indian laws by helping a wanted fugitive, a corrupt man who made black money".

"Here it is not a Vasundhara government, but a Lalit Modi government. Everyone in Rajasthan knows, this is not a BJP government or a Vasundhara government, it is Lalit Modi government here," he charged.

Rahul also accused the Prime Minister of making empty promises ahead of elections and now turning the other way by remaining silent on corruption.

Hitting out at the Prime Minister for talking of giving Rs 15 lakh to account holders by bringing in black money stashed abroad, the Congress Vice President said, "He (Lalit Modi) is sitting in London with lakhs of crores. Bring him back and remove his government here and install a people's government instead."

Taking a jibe at his promise of not doing corruption or allowing it, Rahul said, "Please fulfil that promise and bring Lalit Modi back and remove his government in Rajasthan".

Rahul, who wrapped up his two-day visit to Rajasthan, where he also undertook a 10-km 'padayatra' and interacted with farmers, said, "In earlier times, those who ruled over India had given their powers to London. The same way, your Chief Minister has signed an authority in England and said I want to help an absconder but Indian people should not know.

"In her earlier term as Chief Minister, they did business together and Lalit Modi invested money in her son's hotel, which I am told is a government property," Rahul charged.

Citing the film 'Lagaan', he said, "The characters in the film got united against the British officers who had their remote control in London. Similarly, Raje government's remote control was in the hands of Lalit Modi in London."

The Congress leader also attacked the BJP governments in various states by saying, "Here it is the Lalit Modi government, in Madhya Pradesh it is a Vyapam government, in Maharashtra it is a Munde government and in Chhattisgarh it is a 'dhaan' government. And the Prime Minister with a 56-inch chest is not uttering a single word."

He also lashed out at the Rajasthan government for closing down schools and hospitals, alleging that as many as 17,000 schools had been shut by the Raje government.

Kochi, Jul 11: Johnny Paul Pierce's five-month stay in Kerala has been a soul-soothing experience for 74-year-old US citizen. He now wants to spend the rest of his life here.

"Kerala is a beautiful place to live in. This is my fifth trip here. I usually stay here for six months. It is such a magical place to be and I want to share that with people from the US," Pierce told ANI.

He came to India on February 26 on a tourist visa and is staying at Kandanadu in Kochi.

According to Pierce's Advocate, his tourist visa is valid up to January 26, 2025. But on this visa, he can only stay consecutively for 180 days.

The guidelines of the Indian government permit continuous stay for only 180 days for foreigners on tourist visas. His 180 days were set to expire on August 24, which the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) extended to August 30.

The US citizen has approached the Kerala High Court seeking to convert his tourist visa into a business visa. The petition will be considered next week.

Pierce has sought a directive to the government to permit him to apply for the conversion of his tourist visa into a business visa and also to extend his stay, without having to leave the country.

"I am making a petition for an extra 180 days to stay. And I would also like to get a business visa in order to begin a tour company to bring people from the US to Kerala after the coronavirus. I wish my family could also come here. I am very impressed with what's is happening here. People in the US don't care about COVID-19," he said.

He talked about the risk of going back to his home country saying, "There are only 27 deaths in Kerala and in the US there over 1.3 lakh deaths. I do not want to go back to the US. I am 74 years old and I am at risk. This is a very safe place for me. I hope India embraces and allows me to stay."

"There's chaos in the US due to COVID-19 and government is not taking care like India. I want to stay here," he added.

Pierce further talked about his future plans, saying that if he is allowed to stay, he would like to lease a small resort and make a retirement community, which will be a COVID free zone.

Lastly, he made an appeal to the Indian government to let him stay in India saying that "all the immigration rules were made before COVID-19."

"There should be special consideration for people like me," he added.

New Delhi, Feb 11: As the counting of votes for the Delhi Assembly polls began, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Tuesday raised doubts on EVMs, alleging that no machine having a chip is tamper-proof.

He called upon the Election Commission and the Supreme Court to take a fresh look at the use of EVMs in the country.

"No machine (which) has a chip is tamper-proof. Also please do for a moment think, why no developed country uses EVM," Singh said in a tweet.

"Would CEC and Hon Supreme Court please have a fresh look on EVM voting in India? We are the largest democracy in the world, we can't allow some unscrupulous people to hack results and steal the mandate of 1.3 billion people.

"If they match the votes in the counting unit. Declare the result. If they don't match then count the ballots of all polling booths in the assembly. It would convince everyone and save time also as this has been the consistent argument of CEC in favour of EVM," the Congress leader said.

Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly polls was held on Saturday.

The Election Commission on Sunday announced that the final voter turnout was 62.59 per cent, five per cent less than 2015.

New Delhi, Jan 1: Union Minister Prakash Javadekar launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress for allegedly inciting violence in Delhi against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Mr Javadekar said the violence over the amended citizenship law that broke out in areas like Jamia Nagar, Seelampur and Jama Masjid "cannot be forgiven".

"In Jamia, the Congress' Asib Khan and AAP's Amanatullah Khan delivered inciting speeches. They spread disinformation. The law is to give citizenship to people and not take citizenship away," Mr Javadekar told reporters.

He said the people of India understand the plans of the Congress and the AAP and both parties should apologise.

"We will bring out the truth. The fight is between anarchists and those who oppose them. Our agenda would be wholesome development of Delhi. The AAP strangulated municipal corporations' attempt on development. Rs 900 crore was not given. Today, the people of Delhi are surprised that the AAP slept through all these 4.5 years and in the remaining six months they have launched schemes," Mr Javadekar said.

"The work is done by someone else and the credit is taken by a different individual," the Union Minister said, referring to allegations that the government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took credit for work done by BJP-ruled municipal agencies.

"Who did fogging in dengue season? Our corporations organised an awareness drive against water accumulation and dengue cases went down. During corporation polls, Kejriwal said don't choose BJP as dengue will claim lives. Now he is also claiming credit for decrease in dengue cases because of the work done by these corporations," Mr Javadekar said.

"I am an environment minister. We worked on pollution control. There is no limit to their (AAP's) lies. About unauthorised colonies, the AAP says we have not regularised it. We made a law signed by the President, yet they spread lies," Mr Javadekar said.

The election in Delhi will be held before the end of February.
