Rahul echoes Kejriwal on PM Modi allegation, BJP says no one trusts him

December 22, 2016

Mehsana/new Delhi, Dec 22: More than a month after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged in the Delhi Assembly that Narendra Modi, as Gujarat Chief Minister, received money from the Sahara and Birla groups, and a week after the Supreme Court said it didn’t see “even the smallest material” to substantiate the charge, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi repeated the allegation Wednesday.

Addressing a rally in Mehsana in the Prime Minister’s home state, Rahul alleged that in the records with the Income Tax, there were notings of Sahara officials’ claims that they paid Modi nine times between October 2013 and February 2014, and that the total amount was Rs 40 crore.

He also alleged that according to the documents with the I-T department, the Birla Group too paid Rs 12 crore to the then Chief Minister. Seeking an independent inquiry, Rahul said he was raising the issue “on behalf of the country”.

“You (Modi) did not allow me to speak in Parliament… you did not want to face me in the House. I will tell you the reason. Any business entity keeps records of its transactions. On November 2014, the Income Tax department conducted raids on Sahara and found some documents. I want to share with you the contents of the documents. There were several entries in those documents, which I am reading out before you,” he said.

Rahul then alleged that another record suggested that the Birla Group gave Rs 12 crore to ‘Gujarat Chief Minister’. “This record is with the I-T department… the I-T even recommended an inquiry… I want to ask you why no such inquiry was done,” he said.

“You doubted the honesty of citizens, their hard-earned income, and made them stand in queues. Now, on behalf of citizens, I am asking you whether the information is true or not. And if it is true, then when will you set up an inquiry,” he said.

In New Delhi, the Congress sought to amplify its vice president’s allegations and asked the Prime Minister to “come clean like Sita”.

Congress communication department head Randeep Surjewala told reporters: “We too want the Prime Minister to remain beyond any doubt… If the Prime Minister says that I have not taken any money and is ready for a probe… then let there be an impartial probe by an independent agency which the nation trusts.”

Meanwhile, Kejriwal said he was the first to raise the matter in the Delhi Assembly on November 15, and that he had since been saying it at his rallies in different parts of the country.

“Aage aage chalein hum, peeche peeche Congress aa rahi hai. Himmat dikha rahi hai. Achchi baat hai (We are walking ahead, the Congress is following us. It is showing courage. It is a good thing),” he said.

Kejriwal urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance, appoint a special investigation team and monitor the probe into the papers with the I-T.

New Delhi, Apr 16: South Delhi District Magistrate Brij Mohan Mishra on Thursday said that the administration is investigating how the pizza delivery boy contracted the coronavirus.

"In the last 15 days, we discovered houses he had delivered food. We contacted people living in 72 houses and they have been asked to stay in-home quarantine. No symptoms have been seen in people related to him.

Testing of his roommate has been done and his reports are awaited. The rest of the people don't have any symptoms, they have been placed under institutional quarantine. Those in-home quarantines are also asymptomatic," Mishra said.

"Unless a positive case comes, we feel that transmission has not taken place. The boy told us that he was continuously wearing a mask while delivering the food. We are also finding out how he got infected. We are getting the information about the places he visited for delivery. He was tested on the basis of the doctor's advice. Later, he tested positive," he said.

72 families have to stay in home quarantine in the Malviya Nagar area after the delivery boy tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain said that 17 other delivery boys linked with the infected person have also been placed under institutional quarantine.

"A pizza delivery boy has been detected with COVID-19 here. 17 other delivery boys linked with him have been placed under institutional quarantine and 72 people have been placed under home quarantine," Jain said.

Food delivery app Zomato said that the staff of the infected person's restaurant has delivered some orders which were placed on its platform.

"We've been made aware today that a restaurant's employee, who has been recently tested positive for COVID-19, had delivered food in the past to a few customers in the Malviya Nagar area in Delhi. All these customers have already been contacted by the govt authorities... We are not sure whether the rider was infected at the time of delivery," the company said in a statement.

Zomato also claimed that colleagues of the delivery boy have tested negative for COVID-19.
"This restaurant had instructed their riders to wear masks and follow strict hygiene to keep customers safe from any unintended mishap.

All co-workers of the said rider have been tested negative. And as a precaution, the restaurant where this rider worked has suspended operations," read the statement.

Mumbai, Jan 28: Flag carrier Air India has kept one of its 423-seater jumbo planes ready in Mumbai for the evacuation of Indian citizens from Wuhan in China in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in that country, an official source said on Tuesday.

The airline is awaiting necessary approvals from the ministries of external affairs and health to operate the special flight, the source said. The health ministry's nod is required because the operating crew has to fly in a virus outbreak territory.

"We have kept a Boeing 747-400 ready in Mumbai to operate an evacuation flight to China whenever we get a go ahead from the government," the source said.

Some 250 Indians are to be evacuated.

At a meeting of top secretaries called by the cabinet secretary on Monday, the government decided to be prepared for possible evacuation of Indian nationals in Wuhan.

Accordingly, Ministry of External Affairs will make a request to the Chinese authorities for evacuation of Indian nationals, mostly students, stuck in Wuhan city. The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Health will make arrangements for transport and quarantine facilities respectively, an official release said on Monday.

Wuhan along 12 other cities have been completely sealed by the Chinese authorities to stop the virus from spreading. The death toll climbed to 80 with 2,744 confirmed cases.
