Rahul Gandhi takes a dig at Narendra Modi for pre-poll lies

Araria (Bihar), Nov 2: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of failing to keep promises made during Lok Sabha elections and said his actions will hasten Congress' return to power.

"Now Modi wants them to sing 'dal-roti mat khao prabu ke gun gaao' so that the five-year rule of NDA ends fast and Congress returns to power," the Congress Vice-President said addressing an election rally.

He said though Modi had been in power for over a year now, prices of essentials have gone up instead of coming down.

"He had promised to give employment to youth. Have any one of you been given employment?" Gandhi asked.

Referring to the issue of Indian blackmoney stashed abroad, he said the Prime Minister has also failed to fulfil his another promise of bringing back theMONEY and "transferring Rs 15 lakh each" from the recovered amount to the bank account of every citizen.

He attacked Union Minister V K Singh for his remark that 'if someone throws stones at a dog, the government is not responsible'".

The comment was seen as insensitive, as the minister was responding to questions on the killing of a two-year-old boy and his 11-month-old sister, who died after their home was set on fire allegedly by members of an upper caste in Faridabad.

"The two children were not dogs, they were citizens of the country, they were future of India," Gandhi said without naming Singh.

He also charged the BJP and RSS with targeting people from Bihar in states like Maharashtra.

Taking a dig at NDA government's 'Make in India' campaign, he said the lion depicting the campaign has failed to give jobs to the people. "It has only given contracts to Modi's friends," he alleged.

The Congress leader hit out at the Prime Minister for his remarks that no development has taken place during Congress' rule at the Centre, saying the world today recognises India as a "developed country".

"That has happened in the past 70 years. By saying no development has taken place, he is not questioning the Congress, but the strength of India," he said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 29: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday expressed his concern over the ''non-cooperation from the Karnataka Government in removing the roadblocks erected by them in the roads bordering Malapuram district''.

Addressing a press conference at the Government Secretariat, the Chief Minister said, "Karnataka has not heeded to our request to remove the roadblocks. I have been trying to contact their Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa but not able to reach him."

"We have briefed the Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda and he has offered to resolve the issue. Our Chief Secretary has also briefed the Central Cabinet Secretary and we expect a resolution soon," he added.

New Delhi, Jan 15: The Delhi government Wednesday told the high court that execution of the death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case will not take place on January 22 as a mercy plea has been filed by one of them.

The four convicts -- Vinay Sharma (26), Mukesh Kumar (32), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) -- are to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail. A Delhi court had issued their death warrants on January 7.

Justices Manmohan and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal were told by the Delhi government and the Centre that the petition filed by convict Mukesh, challenging his death warrant, was premature.

The Delhi government and the prison authorities informed the court that under the rules, it will have to wait for the mercy plea to be decided before executing the death warrant.

They also said that none of the four convicts can be executed on January 22 unless the present mercy plea is decided.

The Supreme Court had on Tuesday dismissed the curative pleas of Mukesh and Vinay.

The mercy plea hearing began Wednesday morning and will continue in the afternoon.

Chennai, Jul 30: Tamil Nadu government on Thursday extended the Covid-19 lockdown till August 31, giving only a few relaxations like allowing delivery of non-essential goods by e-commerce sites. The ban on public transport has been extended till August 31, while availing of e-pass for inter-district and inter-state travel will continue to be in force.

In a detailed statement, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a “complete lockdown” during which only essential services would continue to be in force on all Sundays during the month of August across the state.  

In Chennai, restaurants will be allowed to open dine-in facilities at 50 percent of its total capacity from 6 am to 7 pm from August 1, while vegetable shops, grocery outlets and standalone commercial establishments will also be allowed to remain open from 6 am to 7 pm.

E-commerce sites have been allowed to begin delivery of non-essential goods from August 1, while the ban on public transport, temples in urban areas and towns, cinema halls, shopping malls, and gyms would continue till August 31.

It also said companies or factories in Chennai that have been allowed to function with 50 percent of staff can increase their strength to 75 percent from August 1.

The government also asked companies to encourage its employees to work from home and advised commercial establishments to follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as advised by it. Inter-state or inter-district travel will be allowed only with e-pass, while ban on metro and suburban trains continues.

The decision to extend the lockdown till August 31 comes as Tamil Nadu continues to grapple with an increasing number of coronavirus cases. The prevalence of the virus is no more limited to one city or region of the state with almost all districts reporting fresh cases, some of them over 200 new patients, every day.

On Thursday morning, Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 tally was 2,34,114 including 1,72,883 discharges and 3,741 deaths. The active cases stood at 57,490.
