New Delhi, Oct 1: Rahul Gandhi may take over as the Congress president shortly after Diwali, Rajasthan Congress leader Sachin Pilot said on Sunday, stressing that the time had come for the party vice-president to lead from the front.

The Gandhi confidant also said the last names of leaders should not be treated as a disqualification in politics. It was the performance of a leader that ultimately decided his worth, as a surname could only take him “so far,” he said.

Mr. Pilot added that Mr. Gandhi’s elevation had been in the pipeline for long.

“Organisational elections of the Congress are underway and the new president could take over shortly after Diwali. It is something that has been in the pipeline for a long time,” Mr. Pilot said in an interview.

The Congress leader said the general sentiment in the party was that the time had come for Mr. Gandhi to take charge and lead from the front, while favouring a “balanced approach” of a mix of the young and the old in the party.

“To my mind, there is a general sentiment in the party that he should take over as the party president,” Mr. Pilot said.

He pointed out that Mr. Gandhi had been handling “a lot of work” as the vice-president, but the party believed “this [Mr. Gandhi’s elevation] should happen in due course and the time has come for it to happen.”

Asked if Mr. Gandhi’s sister Priyanka Vadra should also enter active politics, the former Minister said, “Though she belongs to the Congress party, whether she should join active politics or not is her personal decision.”

On the issue of dynastic politics and accusations that the Congress promoted dynasties, Mr. Pilot said belonging to a political family might help someone initially, but it could not guarantee progress unless backed by performance.

“Belonging to a family that has been in politics should not be treated as a disqualification,” he said.

Ultimately, he said, success depended on performance.

“If you perform and win the hearts of people through work, delivery and performance, then it will decide. The mere last name will only take you so far,” said Mr. Pilot, the son of late Union Minister and Congress heavyweight Rajesh Pilot.

He brushed aside BJP’s criticism that the Congress was promoting dynasties, pointing out that several people in that party too were from political families.

“The BJP should introspect. Many of their leaders are also from political families,” he said.

Mr. Pilot added he neither promoted nor denounced dynastic politics, but sought to stress that individual calibre would decide one’s success.

”It [family] should not be the only reason to bring someone into public life. No one can be thrust upon the public and there is no short cut to hard work,” he said.

Asked if the time had come for a generational change in the Congress and for the old to make way for the young, the Rajasthan Congress chief said, “It is not a question of making way; it is a question of working together.”

The “cut-off date” system did not work in politics, he added.

Unlike the BJP, which he claimed “humiliates” its elders, the Congress uses their wisdom and moves together, he said.

“The BJP’s margdarshak mandal has become the biggest travesty of time. We don’t humiliate elders like [they do] in the BJP. I believe we should have a good mix between the old and the new while one must keep changing,” he said.

In the Congress, he held, the new generation comes in, with the old lending their support to it.

He favoured a “balanced approach” and claimed the Congress had maintained this as part of its history and tradition.

Mr. Pilot also hit out at the BJP, saying that a particular ideology should not be thrust upon others and there should not be any hatred in politics.

“One should have competitors and not enemies in politics and we must respect that basic tenet of democracy,” he said.

Kochi, Jul 30: The Kerala High Court on Thursday refused to grant the extension for the stay of a 74-year-old US citizen, Johnny Paul Pierce, who had earlier said that he felt safer to remain in India than in the United States amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The single-judge bench of Justice CS Dias, which considered the writ petition, observed that the grant or extension of visa to foreign nationals fall exclusively within the domain of the Government of India (GoI) and that judicial review in such matters is minimal.

The power of the GoI to expel foreigners is absolute and unlimited, the bench said.

"In view of the categoric declaration of law by the Supreme Court, the plea of the petitioner to permit him to stay back in India cannot be accepted, as it falls within the purview of the guidelines and the discretion of the Government of India," the order said.

"The petitioner cannot be heard that the guidelines/policies/regulations formulated by the Government of India, that an American national though has been granted a visa having validity of five years has to leave India within 180 days, is irrational or unreasonable," it added.

The High Court, which was hearing a plea to permit the US citizen to stay in India for a further period of six months, said that the petitioner does not have a case that there is an infraction of Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

"The petitioner was well aware of the visa conditions when he arrived in India, and it is too late in the day for him to raise a grievance on the visa conditions," the bench said noting that the petitioner's love for India was heartening.

The High Court also directed the Foreigners Registration Officer to consider the petitioner's representation within a period of two weeks in accordance with the applicable guidelines and policies.

New Delhi, Feb 16: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said everyone is unhappy in the society and constantly agitating notwithstanding a "many-fold rise" in materialistic comforts and pleasures.

Addressing a gathering of Sangh workers and intellectuals here in Gujarat, Mr Bhagwat also said that even political parties who are not in power are also agitating.

"Inspite of increase in comforts and materialistic pleasures, everyone is unhappy and is staging agitations. Be it owner or servant, a party in opposition, the common man students, teachers, everyone is unhappy and dissatisfied," the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) chief said.

He was speaking on the topic "India's Role in the Present World Context".

Mr Bhagwat further said that bigotry, violence and terrorism are on the rise in the present world.

"India has to give 'dharma'  (wisdom) to the world so that knowledge spreads but humans do not become robotic. We have always talked about the concept of global family but not global market," he said.

The lecture was organised by "Madhav Smruti Nyas", an organisation backed by the RSS.

"To think that we are living in a better world is a half truth. Facilities are not evenly distributed. Rule of Jungle is prevailing. A capable person is crushing the weak to climb up. Knowledge is used more for the destruction of the world," the Sangh chief said.

Mr Bhagwat said people are also misusing social media by spreading "false information" to create controversies.

He also stated that trying to put "everyone into one uniform" is also a form of bigotry.

"US and Russia are super powers. China would become a super power too. Now, what super power nations did to others? They just took control of other countries for their own selfish agenda. These super powers gave it back only when they were asked to do so. Otherwise, they never gave anything to others," said Mr Bhagwat.

Indore, Feb 3: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sunday attacked the Centre for conferring the Padma Shri on Pakistan-origin singer Adnan Sami, who became an Indian citizen in 2016.

Addressing "Save the Constitution, Save the Country" rally here in Madhya Pradesh, Singh said Sami's father had "pounded India with bombs" when he was serving with the Pakistani Air Force (PAF).

"Since Sami is an artist who has come from Pakistan, I had recommended his case to the Indian government for citizenship. He has got Indian citizenship under the Modi government," the Congress leader said, adding that he never made any recommendation to the government for conferring Padma Shri on Sami.

He said Sami's father had "dropped bombs against us" while flying a Pakistan Air Force combat plane.

"In contrast, Indian Army officer Sanaullah of Assam, who had fought against the enemy, was sent to a detention camp for failing to show documents (during the Assam NRC exercise). This is the citizenship law of the Modi government," he said.

Sami, born in London to a Pakistani Air force veteran, applied for Indian citizenship in 2015 and became a citizen of the country in January 2016.

He was one of the 118 people chosen for the Padma Shri awards by the Centre last month.

BSF Officer Sanaullah was deprived of his basic rights and put in the detention center while Adnan Sami was granted citizenship and conferred with prestigious "Padma Shri" Award. Really, Modi & Amit Shah duos doesn't know what they are doing in India.....what a bizzare!!!
