Rain fury ends in coastal Karnataka as Cyclone Kyarr to weakens

Mangaluru, Oct 28: After pounding the coastal districts of Karnataka for a week, the rain disappeared as people of the region woke up to a sunny morning on Monday.

According to Indian Meteorological Department's (IMD) latest bulletin, the intensity of Cyclone Kyarr, which was classified under 'extremely severe cyclonic storm' a day before, was likely to intensify on Monday morning and weaken gradually thereafter.

There has been a significant reduction of rainfall in the past 24 hours over Konkan, Goa and Karnataka coasts, as well as the eastern and north eastern parts of the country. Isolated rains and thunderstorms are likely over parts of central, eastern and western parts of India during next 1-2 days.

A day after it was classified as “extremely severe cyclonic storm”, Kyarr is now moving west-northwestwards and is likely to hit the Oman coast by October 31.

The intensity of the supercyclone is likely to weaken after October 28, according to the IMD’s latest bulletin. This is the first super cyclone after ‘Gonu’, till then considered the strongest-ever to lord over the Arabian Sea.

Covid-19: Safety of families of Dubai Kannaidgas is our responsibility: Karnataka Home Minister

Bengaluru, Apr 18: State Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai has stated that there is no need for Dubai Kannadigas to be worried during the COVID-19 crisis.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, he said that the State government is with the Dubai Kannadigas and their families residing here in the State, promising that they will not face any problems.

Bommai also sought the cooperation of all Dubai-based Kannadiga industrialists and employees in the fight against the virus.

14 held after covid patient’s death in Belagavi leads to violence; Section 144 in hospital surroundings

Belagavi, Jul 23: As many as 14 persons have been arrested following last night’s violence at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) - District Hospital.

Angered over the death of a Covid-19 patient, family members had turned violent and damaged the BIMS with stones and set an ambulance on fire alleging medical negligence.

The 55-year-old male had been admitted to the hospital for treatment on July 19, for treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was positive for Covid-19 according to the report received on Wednesday. He died on Wednesday night while being shifted to Intensive Care Unit for treatment of respiratory problems.

Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Two persons were detained in the spot and 12 persons later. The matter is under investigation and the police have launched a manhunt to nab the other accused.

During the violence, a police personnel and five other hospital staff suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were imposed in the areas surrounding the hospital to prevent crowd gathering.

Deputy Commissioner M G Hiremath visited BIMS on Wednesday night and held a meeting with the doctors and nurses treating the patients and those who were at the receiving end of the violence.

Hiremath said that he instilled confidence among the doctors and nurses and assured them that safety measures would be taken. Security arrangements will be made and prohibitory orders will be imposed. Presently entry of people has been banned, he said.

Police Commissioner Dr K Thiyagarajan said that cases will be filed against all those responsible for the violence. People whose vehicles have been damaged can also file complaints.

Suo moto case against saffronites who threatened to behead U T Khader

Mangaluru, Jan 29: The police have registered a suo motu case against some of the youths who raised life threat slogans against former Karnataka Minister and Congress MLA UT Khader during the pro-Citizenship Amendment Act rally here on January 27.

A video of the incident that went viral on social media showed the youths belonging to BJP and other saffron outfits raising slogans that they will “cut off his limbs and chop off his head if necessary” during the rally organised by the BJP in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday.

Though Mr Khader did not file a complaint, the Congress party had urged the police to register a suo motu case.
