Rain fury in Kerala: 22 killed, over 22,165 people housed in relief camps

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 9: Heavy rain continued to lash several parts of Kerala for the third day on Friday even as the rain-related death toll in the state mounted to 22 and more than 22,165 people have been moved to 315 relief camps, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Friday. Talking to newspersons Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayan said people from 5,936 families were shifted to the relief camps in the State which witnessed 24 landslides till Thursday night.

Stating that all measures have been taken to provide assistance to the affected persons and to face any eventuality, he said “according to weather predictions, very heavy rainfall will continue for the next 24 hours and the intensity of rain will decrease after that.” Due to heavy rains and water logging, 58 drinking water supply projects of Kerala Water Authority (KWA) were damaged which led to disruption of 1,56,000 drinking water connections.

As the operations of the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) will remain suspended till Sunday afternoon due to water logging, the Chief Minister said talks with the Navy are on to explore the possibility of using Kochi Naval base airport.

Health of migrants should not be jeopardized as they return to their places: HD Kumaraswamy

Bengaluru, May 4: Former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday said that the health of the migrants who have been allowed to move, should not be jeopardized and appropriate tests must be conducted.

"The task was to send the workers to their places. However, their health should not be jeopardized. This decision made for their benefit should not be a travesty for them. There will also be physical interference on the buses and appropriate tests must be done," said Kumaraswamy.

"The lockdown, which was implemented without any prerequisites, is now loosened without warning. The state government, which has allowed migrant workers to move to the city, has mobilized large numbers of people. By this, the government is playing with their health," he added.

He continued saying that the government should not lose out on an unscientific move that resulted in the loss of thousands of crores of rupees from a custodial lockdown.

"Workers and villages must be sober. The government must take all necessary precautions in this regard," he added.

Chikkamagaluru reclaims ‘corona-free district’ tag as all 16 patients discharged

Chikkamagaluru, June 6: The Chikkamagaluru district has become free from confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The last two of the 16 covid patients in the district were discharged today after they were treated and tested negative.

P 2765, a 28-year-old man and P 2766, a 38-year-old man were discharged, said Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham. Nine others were discharged from hospital yesterday.

Till May 22, Chikkamagaluru district had not recorded any positive and had remained a green zone till then.

However, with the influx of stranded people from Maharashtra and Delhi, the district had registered 16 covid positive cases.

“As on today, there are no active covid-19 cases in the district. However, we should be attentive and take all the precautionary measurers,” the DC said.

The officer has appealed to the public to maintain social distancing in public places and wear masks.

Abandoned bag triggers panic among passengers in Yadgir

Yadgir, Jan 21: A bag was found abandoned at the Yadgir Bus Stand on Tuesday morning that left the commuters in panic.

After receiving the information, a police team, along with a sniffer dog, rushed to the spot. When the bag was checked, the police found clothes and cash in it.

It is stated that a passenger might have left the bag in a hurry to catch the bus.
