Rain heaps misery on Udupi, DK

Mangalore/ Udupi, August 10: A woman drowned and five houses were damaged following heavy rains accompanied by strong winds in Udupi district on Thursday.

According to the Kundapur Taluk Office, Sakamma Shedti (55) had gone to fetch grass when she accidentally slipped and fell into a pit and drowned at Devasthanabettu in Bellur village in Kundapur taluk. The pit had been created due to clay quarrying there.

The body was recovered from the pit at around 5.30 p.m. Sakamma, wife of Bhojaraja Shetty, was a resident of Bellur village.

According to the Udupi Taluk Office, rain damaged a house in Yellur, where a pump shed and a well belonging to Harishchandra Rao were also damaged resulting in an estimated loss of Rs. 45,000.

Damages to the houses were reported from Bomarbettu, Shivally and Kachur. Udupi Tahsildar B. Abhijin said that a team of officials was keeping an eye on the possible sea erosion in the Bada Yermal village area.

According to the information made available by the Control Room at the Deputy Commissioner's Office here, Udupi city received a rainfall of 61.3 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Kundapur and Karkala towns received a rainfall of 52.8 mm and 130.8 mm, respectively.

Two persons were injured following damage to a house caused by landslide in Bajal near Mangalore because of incessant rain on Thursday. Belated reports said a 52-year-old man drowned in a lake in Bantwal taluk on Tuesday night. As many as seven houses were damaged and several agricultural fields on the river banks were inundated in the last 24 hours.

According to personnel in the district disaster management cell, landslide in Bajal caused damage to the house of 60-year-old Krishna Nayak. The personnel said Krishna Nayak and his wife Saraswati Nayak sustained injuries and were admitted to a nearby hospital. One house suffered minor damage in a village near Vittal.

Additional Deputy Commissioner K. Dayanand said seven houses were damaged partially. There were reports of inundation of some agricultural fields that are situated next the river bank. Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers were flowing below the danger level, he added.

Sullia recorded rainfall of 125.4 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. of Thursday. According to information provided by the revenue officials, Bantwal received 115.8 mm, followed by Belthangady 80.8 mm, Mangalore 90.8mm and Puttur 57.3 mm rainfall.

A 52-year-old man drowned in a lake that was filled to the brim following heavy rainfall on Tuesday. According to a revenue official, Sesappa Baira (52) accidentally slipped into the lake in Vittal Pednur village in Bantwal Taluk and drowned.

The Post Graduate Department of English, St. Agnes College (Autonomous) organized COSMOPOETICA – a Two-Day International Poets Conference, transcending the boundaries of language and bringing together scholars from English, Hindi and Kannada languages. The key-note speaker was Dr Hima Urmila Shetty and the Panel of Experts included Maggie Harris, a Commonwealth short stories award winning poet of Broadstairs, Kent; Dr Kathryn Hummel, a visiting professor at IIT Hyderabad; Prof Raj Rao, acclaimed poet and novelist, former HOD of English, Savithribai Phule University; Lata Chouhan from Bangalore; Vijay Tiwari from Ahmedabad; Dr. Nagaveni Manchi, an acclaimed Poet and Professor, Govt College, Carstreet and Ms. Chandrakala Nandavara, former Principal of Ganapati PU College.

Dr Sr Jeswina A.C., the Principal; Dr Sr Maria Roopa A.C. the Superior and Dr Sr Vinora A.C., graced the occasion.

Dr Geralyn Pinto, the Staff Convenor; Dr Malini Hebbar, the HOD and Ananya Sneha the student Convenor organised the Conference.

The highlight of the Conference was the Poetry Workshop, Slam Poetry Competition in three languages and paper presentations on various aspects of poetry.

Overall the conference drew together poets and academicians to discuss poetry as a genre and practice with ignited minds.

Bengaluru, Aug 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa tweeted late Sunday night that he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. 

In a brief post on Twitter, Mr Yediyurappa said that he was fine but had been hospitalised on the advice of doctors. While his daughter Padmavathi has also tested positive for the virus, the Chief Minister's son, Vijayendra, has tested negative.

The Chief Minister's media team has said he has been admitted to Manipal Hospital. Mr Yediyurappa, 77, also requested those who had come in contact with him to be wary of Covid symptoms and self-isolate.

"I have tested positive for coronavirus. Whilst I am fine, I am being hospitalised as a precaution on recommendation of doctors. I request those who have come in contact with me recently to be observant and exercise self-quarantine," the Chief Minister's tweet read.

The testing of the Chief Minister was done as part of the routine weekly tests he undergoes along with his staff. The results of Mr Yediyurappa's gunmen and security staff, around 50 of them, are expected today.

Staff members at Mr Yediyurappa's home office, Krishna, had tested positive early last month. 

At that time Mr Yediyurappa said: "I am going to discharge my duties from home from today for the next few days in view of some of the staff in the office-cum-residence Krishna testing positive".

Mr Yediyurappa had also met Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala in Bengaluru on Friday. State Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai was also present at the meeting.

The Chief Minister is the second high-profile political leader to confirm testing positive for COVID-19 today; hours earlier Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted similar news.

Mr Shah, 55, too said he was "fine" and that he had been hospitalised on the "advice of doctors".

The minister also asked all those who had been in contact with him over the last few days to "please isolate yourself and get your tests done".

The Home Minister was at a cabinet meet last week, at which top colleagues, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman were present.

All Covid norms, including social distancing, were followed at that meeting, sources said.

Last month Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan tested positive for the virus as well. He has been in hospital since then and tweeted today to say that he was well and, minutes after Mr Yediyurappa tweeted his Covid positive status, he posted a get-well-soon message.

"I pray to God for your speedy recovery, Yediyurappaji," Mr Chouhan wrote.

Mr Chouhan had tweeted a message for Mr Shah too. "Home Minister Amit Shah, may God help you recover soon, so you can serve the nation with full energy. Our best wishes are with you," his tweet read.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also tweeted, saying: "I wish BS Yediyurappa a speedy recovery and to return with good health to continue his work for the people".

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit also tested positive today, Chennai's Kauvery Hospital, where he has been admitted, said. He is asymptomatic and clinically stable.

On Sunday morning the virus claimed the life of a UP minister - Kamal Rani Varun, 62, died at Lucknow's Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.

Over the last 24 hours, 54,735 cases were reported, taking the total number of cases to 17,50,723, data from the Health Ministry showed.

The continuing spike in cases over the past weeks comes as India gradually re-opens its economy after more than four months of the world's strictest lockdown. Unlock3, the third phase of easing of restrictions, came into effect on Saturday.

It took just 185 days for India to cross the 17-lakh mark after the first case was reported in Kerala in January; it took 110 days to record the first 1 lakh cases. More than 60 per cent of total cases in the country and over 50 per cent of total deaths have been recorded in July.

Mangaluru, May 3: Dakshina Kannada in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary today announced that there will be partial lockdown relaxations in the district from tomorrow (May 4) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The district falls under orange zone as per the classification done by the union government to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Mr Poojary said that shops can remain open for 12 hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.). However, this relaxation will not apply for malls, restaurants, beauty parlors, saloons and dental clinics. 

Even though bars can remain open, they can only sell liquor. People will not be allowed to consume anything inside the bar. 

In auto-rickshaws only one passenger will be allowed to travel apart from driver and in car two passengers will be allowed apart from driver. 

The relaxations come with strict protocols, which the people need to follow, he said, adding that the relief had been provided to make life easier and not for people to come out unnecessarily.
