The pre-monsoon showers have brought a great relief to the people in coastal Karnataka.

The rains accompanied with lightning and thunder lashed Belthangady, Sullia and Puttur taluks too. Though power supply was disrupted in many areas, the rains have brought hope of water reaching Thumbe dam, which supplies drinking water to Mangaluru.

According to a press release issued by mayor on Wednesday, the water-level at Thumbe dam is enough only for a day.

Other parts of Karnataka

Several districts in Karnataka state also continued to receive good rainfall on Thursday.

Stray incidents of rain-related damages have been reported from various parts of the state. Heavy rains lashed Belagavi city and the surrounding villages in Belagavi taluk and at M K Hubli town and the surrounding villages in Bailhongal taluk for about an hour on Thursday evening. Downpour also provided respite from scorching heat, bringing down day-time temperatures.

Rains combined with winds and thunders resulted in crop loss and roof tiles of a few houses blew away at M K Hubli, causing huge losses.

Cloudy environs prevailed in Belagavi taluk since noon and the skies opened up in the evening for about an hour. Strong winds and thunders accompanied the downpour. City and most of the villages received heavy rains bringing the temperature down. There were no reports of damages related to rainfall.

At M K Hubli, a woman suffered injuries after the roof tiles of a few houses blew away in the heavy downpour that was accompanied by winds. Banana plantains cultivated by farmers in M K Hubli and the surrounding areas were damaged.

Mundgod, Yellapur, Sirsi and Siddapur taluks in Uttar Kannada district received good rainfall on Thursday.

Banana plantations cultivated on at least 50 acres of land have been destroyed in the rains, accompanied by gusty winds.

Various taluk places in the district, including Shivamogga city, received moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Sagar, Bhadravathi, Hosanagar and Thirthahalli taluks have received good rainfall.

Lighting claims a life

A daily wage labourer lost her life and three others suffered injuries after lightning struck them on Thursday in Chikkamagaluru.

The deceased, Rathnamma (52), was a resident of Sintikere village in Arsikere taluk. The injured are Ratna, Sharada and Basamma, all from the same village. All of them were working in a coffee plantation and were taking shelter under a tree after lunch when the lightning struck them. The rains lashed for about an hour in Mudigere and surrounding areas too.

Bengaluru, Jun 11: A love triangle took a violent turn when a final-year engineering student was assaulted by both her current and former lovers. She's now battling for her life in the ICU, police said.

For the 22-year-old woman, who lives in Sidedahalli, it was a case of fast-changing relationships. She broke up with a fellow student Babith, 21, a few months ago after having dated him for four years. Four months ago, she started seeing another collegemate named Rahul, 22, and everything seemed fine.

On June 7, she went to Rahul's house, ostensibly for his birthday party, after informing her parents. Babith got wind of it and barged into Rahul's house. The trio got into an argument, and Rahul abused and assaulted her.

The woman decided to leave him, and went with Babith to his house in Chikkabanavara, North Bengaluru. But things didn't end there. Babith picked an argument with her. Things became so bad that he attacked her with a helmet.

He then panicked and called her parents, asking them to take her home. When her parents arrived, they found only Babith, his mother and sister in the house. Babith's family directed them to a bedroom where she was lying motionless, with her face being badly wounded.

When her parents demanded to know what had happened, nobody responded. They took her to a hospital where her condition remains serious. A while later, Babith came to the hospital and gave her parents the key of her scooter. He told them what had happened and allegedly warned them against filing a police complaint.

Her mother, however, filed a complaint with the jurisdictional Soladevanahalli police. According to her, Babith had fought with her daughter at their house for not taking his phone calls six months ago.

Shashikumar N, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), said both the men had been arrested and that further investigations are underway.

Bengaluru, Jun 4: Karnataka opposition leader Siddaramaiah created a flutter on Wednesday saying many disgruntled BJP leaders had met him.

"Many disgruntled BJP lawmakers have met me and, of course, expressed their displeasure," tweeted Siddaramaiah.

Congress leader Siddaramaiah''s statements assume significance as recently several reports emerged highlighting some north Karnataka legislators meeting over dinner to put pressure on Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa to expand the cabinet and offer them ministerial roles.

North Karnataka leaders such as Umesh V. Katti, Chitradurga MLA G. H. Thippareddy and Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and others met over dinner.

However, the Chief Minister said he was too busy to even look at the dissidence because he is occupied with development work of the state and fighting Covid.

Siddaramaiah, the former chief minister, alleged that Yediyurappa''s son Vijayendra is functioning as a non-constitutional chief minister.

"This is true in the BJP. That dissent will continue. We are not responsible if the government collapses," he pointed out.

The Congress leader said Karnataka has stooped to the level of not being in a position to even pay salaries to its employees.

"The state was the first in economic discipline during our government. Now the government has no money to pay salaries to government employees. Not only the state but the entire country is financially bankrupt," he said.

Mangaluru, June 21: A gang of miscreants intercepted a goods auto-rickshaw which was legally transporting beef from an abattoir to market and attacked its driver in heart of the city this morning.

The attack comes exactly a week after a gang of Bajrang Dal miscreants thrashed a cattle trader at Urwa while legally transporting four buffalos to Kudroli abattoir on June 13.

Today, a person identified as Abdul Rasheed was transporting around 200 kilograms of beef from Kudroli abattoir to Kankanady market.

Meanwhile, miscreants began to chase beef laden vehicle and managed to waylay it near Highland Hospital. They thrashed Abdul Rasheed and poured kerosene on the beef besides damaging the vehicle.

The miscreants fled in their car and motorbikes after passersby began to gather.

Dear DC Dr. Harsha, we want to know if you will take strict action on these anti nationals / rowdis / day robbers / terrorists who ransacked auto + beaten the auto driwer and stolen Rs. 10,000 from him though he was legally transporting the meat.   They same terrorists are involved in transporting live animals to beef export houses in Gujrat owned by Brahmins / Jains.   Will you be loyal to your duty and promise.   We will see how you will handle the issue failing which you will lose our respect and we will consider you as a dramabaz and phenku.   You should follow the law and treat everyone equally.  There should not be any pity on goondas/ terrorists belonging to sangh parivar.   The terrorists who thrashed the auto driver and damaged the auto and burnt the meat by pouring kerosene are not human beings and should be treated as anti nationals + terrorists.    We hope you will discharge your duty as per the oath taken by you while accepting your post.
