Rakesh Asthana appointed CBI special director

New Delhi, Oct 23: Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana was on Monday appointed the special director of the CBI. Asthana, a 1984-batch IPS officer, had been serving in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as additional director.

He is among seven other senior police officers of the 1984 batch promoted on Monday by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, according to a notification by the Department of Personnel and Training.

Javeed Ahmed, a 1984-batch IPS officer who served as DGP of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and launched key police modernisation projects such as the "Twitter Seva" in the state, was given the rank of special DG at the Centre.

Ahmed, a former CBI joint director who was posted at the National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science under the home ministry, has been given the rank of special DG on "in-situ" basis, the notification said.

Deepak Mishra of AGMU cadre and Sudeep Lakhtakia of Telangana cadre have been promoted as special DG in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Both were serving in the CRPF as additional DG. A P Maheshwari of UP cadre and Rajesh Ranjan of Bihar cadre, who held the post of additional DG in the Border Security Force, have been promoted as special DG in the force.

Gurbachan Singh of Odisha cadre and Arvind Kumar - posted as additional director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) - have been given the ranks of a special director.

While Singh has been given the position against an existing vacancy, Kumar has been granted the rank and pay of special director on "in-situ" basis.

New Delhi, April 6: India recorded the highest number of 704 positive cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

With these new cases, the total number of COVID-19 positive cases in India have now climbed to 4,281.

Total deaths stand at 111 including 28 new deaths. So far, 318 COVID-19 patients have been cured across the country.

Bengaluru, May 29: Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda mourned the demise of Rajya Sabha member and Managing Director of leading Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi M P Veerendra Kumar, hailing him as a great journalist and writer.

"My deepest condolences on the demise of former union Minister and Rajya sabha member Shri M.P. Veerendra Kumar. He was a great journalist and writer. May god give strength to his family & his people to bear the loss," Gowda said in his condolence message.

Veerandra Kumar, who was a member of PTIs Board of Directors, died late Thursday at a private hospital in Kozhikode in Kerala following cardiac arrest.

New Delhi, Mar 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described British premier Boris Johnson as a "fighter" and hoped he recovers from coronavirus infection.

"Dear PM @BorisJohnson, you're a fighter and you will overcome this challenge as well," Modi tweeted.

He said he prays for his good health and extends best wishes in ensuring a healthy UK.

Johnson said on Friday that he has tested positive for coronavirus after experiencing mild symptoms and is now self-isolating at 10 Downing Street in line with the medical advice.

"I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government's response via video-conference as we fight this virus," he said.
