Patna, Jul 5: With less than a fortnight left for the Presidential poll, RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Wednesday claimed that the NDA nominee Ramnath Kovind was actually not a Dalit.laluyadav

Addressing his partymen at the 21th foundation day of the RJD here in the State Capital, Lalu said Kovind belonged to the Koli community, which had a minuscule presence in Uttar Pradesh. “However, Kolis are OBCs (other backward castes) in Gujarat and comprise around five to six per cent of the population,” argued Lalu.

Lalu, who has stood by the Congress-led Opposition candidate for Presidential election Meira Kumar said, “All efforts should be made to ensure victory of Bihar ki Beti in the ensuing presidential polls.”

In the meantime, while Lalu was addressing his partymen, a large number of NSUI (National Students’ Union of India) activists were arrested near JP roundabout. These leaders, from the student wing of the Congress party, under an agitation programme named ‘Beti jitao’ (ensure victory of daughter, in reference to Meira) were on way to gherao CM Nitish Kumar’s residence and lodge a protest against JD (U)’s support to NDA candidate Ramnath Kovind instead of Opposition nominee Meira Kumar.

Meanwhile, Lalu called upon all non-BJP parties to join hands so that a united Opposition could fight Narendra Modi Government tooth and nail. “Today, there is an undeclared Emergency in the country where the Opposition leaders and media are threatened every now and then. I have convened a rally on August 27 here in Patna where the Congress, NCP, DMK, TMC, Left, BJD, SP and BSP leaders will be present.

I am trying to forge a unity between Akhilesh and Mayawati too. The day SP and BSP come under one roof, the match for 2019 (Lok Sabha polls) will be over,” said Lalu, amid applause and cheers.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Playing down the simmering discontent among the disgruntled legislators who missed a cabinet berth again, Karnataka BJP on Tuesday denied any revolt brewing against Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.

"An unsigned letter in Kannada circulating in the social media is bogus, as it was fabricated in the name of Santosh, a private secretary to Yediyurappa. No revolt is brewing against the Chief Minister," party spokesman G. Madhusudhana told news agency here.

In the second cabinet expansion on February 6, only 10 newly-elected legislators, who defected from the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) in July, were inducted, leaving the party's many aspiring lawmakers miffed.

"The talk of about 20 loyal MLAs ganging up against Yediyurappa is a speculation as rumour mills are working overtime. No rebellion is brewing against the Chief Minister," asserted the official.

On the charge that Yediyurappa's younger son B.Y. Vijayandra was acting like a 'super or de facto CM' and medalling in the state administration, Madhusudhana said the latter was only assisting his father in party activities as he was also a party worker.

"As Yediyurappa is 76 years old and ageing, Vijayandra is helping his father in party affairs so that he (Chief Minister) could be free to attend to administration," Madhusudhana said.

Yediyurappa's elder son B.Y. Raghavendra is a three-time BJP Lok Sabha member from Shimoga in the state's Malnad area.

With six cabinet posts vacant in the 34-member ministry, many legislators, including eight-time MLA Umesh Katti, are upset that they have not been rewarded for their loyalty to the party even six months after the BJP returned to power again in the southern state.

On the purported meeting of about 20 BJP MLAs at the residence of state Industries Minister Jagadish Shettar here on Monday, Madhusudhana said it was a "get-together" as they were all in Bengaluru again to attend the budget session of the state legislature which began on Monday.

"There is no crisis in the party. Our government is stable and will complete the remaining three-year term in office till May 2023," he added.

Bengaluru, Feb 4: Congress MLA UT Khader on Tuesday alleged that B.S. Yediyurappa-led government has stopped providing free food to poor families under 'Anna Bhagya' scheme from last two months which was started by the Congress in the state.

"Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had started a scheme 'Anna Bhagya' under which free rice and wheat to 494 education institutions, NGOs, and old age homes were provided and the present government has stopped providing benefits to the poor people," said the MLA.

Alleging that the present government has stopped with the scheme Khadar said, "From last two months the government has stopped providing free food to the institutes and NGOs."

Khadar further demanded to restart the scheme to help the poor students.

"They should restart the scheme which supports poor students and old age houses, or congress will protest if the scheme is not restarted."

Last year in August, Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had said that his government has no plans to stop any "pro-people schemes" including Anna Bhagya.

"Our government has no plans to scrap any of the pro-people schemes. Our Government is a pro-people Government. I have already signed the file to release grants to continue the "Anna Bhagya scheme" the twitter handle of Karnataka Chief Minister's Office had quoted him as saying.
